Lmb is not right, on 2 counts.
First, it’s not Martinez’s system, it’s one played by many, many teams both at home and abroad – admittedly not as badly as we play it.
Second, as there are many good teams that play that way whose top strikers DO score regularly, then it stands to reason that those players would have scored.
Congratulations on a quality childish post, though
1 November 2010 at 9:59 pm #49940No Griff, I don’t agree with that at all.
Which is why, as I’ve said before, Di Santo needs a partner as his work rate will pay off more if he has someone who can put the bloody thing in the net alongside him.
2 November 2010 at 3:58 am #49987How many strikers will he get through before the penny drops ? I’m beginning to think he’s a bit simple.Yep, he’s a bit simple is that academically qualified bilingual Martinez.
Who has ever played with one man up front and won anything? 4-4-2, that’ll cure everything: two wide men; big man – little man up-top; none of this fannying around and passing the ball from the back – gerrit forwards etc etc. Who needs a UEFA Coaching badge eh?
2 November 2010 at 12:14 pm #49993Did we not sign Boselli to score goals ? This player has been talked about a few times now on Talk sport via their South American correspondent and he has said each time that Boselli needs assistance up front and a foil to work off. He does all his best work from inside the box yet we hardly penetrate that area ! He is our dearest latest acquisition yet he is not being made full use of ! Now that to me is like trying to use a torch with no batteries in it !! Each time he has played he has been a lone striker which is a complete waste of time now that is surely down to the manager is it not ?

Maybe he’s right, maybe he’s not. I don’t know. I suspect that before Whelan agreed to pay £6m and £38k per week wages, he might have had some discussion about how and where the lad would be playing.
Honestly, I don’t mind people having a pop at Whelan, Martinez and the Club now and again but credit them with a bit of intelligence. As much as some of you might think they are useless, they are not all a bunch of half-witted wasters.
If they were, they’d be posting on here, day in day out.
Not aimed at you Fil, by the way.
2 November 2010 at 2:18 pm #50009I actually think that Boselli can come good yet.
I’d start him against Liverpool, with the encouragement for him to “show your worth and quality against Liverpool” and see what happens. Di Santo’s been off form for a couple of games.

We should be using him to his potential which could EASILY be up top with Di Santo. Not saying it would work but surely worth a try? I do think he will come good!
