Someone who I think could benefit from a rejuvenating spell at Wigan Athletic is Stephen Ireland.
He could play at the tip of our midfield three with ease and has the ability to chip in with the odd goal.
Obviously he is nuts, but perhaps a spell at a little club like Wigan could give him back his mojo ;)
6 January 2011 at 5:37 pm #54854Would love to see him here was City’s best player for 2 or 3 seasons before they started spending stupid money. However, I am doubtful if he would come here.
6 January 2011 at 5:48 pm #54857It would be surprising but then we have pulled off a few surprising transfers in recent years and our manager does seem to have a silver tongue when it comes to getting players to sign for us – look at McCarthy and Moses. Also, while it seems laughable now in hindsight when we signed Boselli that was a bit of a coup!
N’Zogbia signed for us to get his career back on track. Besides I’m sure the Celtic influences in our dressing room would be right up his street
6 January 2011 at 6:21 pm #54858I’d love a player of Stephen Ireland’s quality at Latics but its never going to happen in a million years
The comparison with Bobby being able to get McCarthy & Moses to come to Latics over other clubs is a bit way off the mark – the only other club in for McCarthy at the time we signed him was Wolves & you had Latics (a relatively established top flight club) & Wolves (newly promoted & favourites for the drop) he chose (IMO) the better club for him – and I remember reading at the time that it was his friendship with Graeme Jones that swung it.
With Moses, no other top flight club went in for him (despite all the rumours) so it was Latics against some top half Championship clubs so it wasn’t really a coup for BobbyIf Ireland does leave Villa they’ll be a cue of top flight clubs of far bigger standing than Latics who go in for him which is a completely different situation to when we brought in McCarthy & Moses
6 January 2011 at 6:43 pm #54859I don’t see a queue of clubs in for him at the moment in fact Tony Pulis has distanced himself from rumours that Sjoke are interested in him.
Stranger things have happened, but I happen to think that the fact we managed to sign two of British football’s most promising talents is a bit of a coup for a Premier League club which averages 16k a game.

In fact just because loads of clubs weren’t after Moses and McCarthy and didn’t put in concrete bids doesn’t mean we didn’t have to work hard to get them here. Both of them could have said, ‘I don’t fancy going to a club which has so many moaning fans on message boards who hate the manager, I think I’ll stay where I am until a better and bigger offer comes along’
6 January 2011 at 11:14 pm #54877How much was Heskey on when he was with us ? £40,000 a week ? Stephen Ireland is Aston Villa’s highest earner so yeah I can really see him coming here and I can really see DW paying his wages !! Time to come back into the real World now Swindon !

7 January 2011 at 11:57 am #54896Swindon – I’m not saying that Latics/Bobby/whoever didn’t have to work hard to get Moses & McCarthy to come to Latics. What I’m saying is that to compare bringing those 2 to the club compared to bringing someone like Stephen Ireland (especially when he commands the sort of wages that he’s on at Villa) is somewhat way off the mark
On the subject of McCarthy however, he does seem to have a very sensible head on his shoulders. From what I’ve read he spent time on trial at Liverpool when he was 16 & they offered a deal for him to join them which Hamilton accepted but which he turned down because he realised that he would be better off playing 1st team football at Hamilton than youth/reserve team football at Liverpool for 4 or 5 years. So looked at in that respect, yes it was a bit of a coup. When looked at in terms of when his club said “reet its time to move on”, the reality is that only Wolves & ourselves put in bids for him so its not that much of a coup
Whether or not Moses is regarded as one of “Britain’s most promising talents” is a matter of debate when even the manager who signs him was not prepared to give him a start the best part of 12 months after signing him (nor does he start every game for the England U21’s). However even if you do regard him as one of the most promising talents in the country it doesn’t escape the fact that Latics were the only top flight team to bid for him – other clubs no doubt had a look at him & decided he wasn’t ready or worth the gamble & Bobby thought otherwise. That may well go on to prove to be an absolute masterstroke on Bobby’s part but only time will tell.
Yes both players could have said they would wait for better offers to come along but both players were pretty much told they were going to be sold in the respective transfer windows, both players wanted to move at that time & Latics were the best offer on the table at that time
Completely different kettle of fish to if Ireland is on the market
