We were the better side at Derby yes, but after our wretched away record I can see why we would be cautious and try to get a point and a clean sheet first and foremost. And as I continue to say, had he gone for it and we lost he would have been slated for going for it. Don’t say he wouldn’t because it happens on social media every week.

Brings on Naismith v Derby and Bristol – twitter meltdown
Doesn’t bring on Naismith v Swansea – twitter meltdown
Plays Windass – social media claim he’s crap
Doesn’t play Windass – twitter meltdown because Daddy Dean says he was fit

Nobody might use the term “steamroller” but there are plenty that claim we should be beating a, b or c especially when we play at home.

Whilst others suggested putting young Gelhardt on would turn the game. Not seen much evidence of that in the last two fixtures. One goal against Hull was class. That apart he’s rarely touched ball. Looks like he needs a spell on loan to get to grips with mens football if we want to throw him in.

I’m not getting into a Martinez v Cook debate I’m concerned about the now and for Cook to hint that it’s going to be hard to stay in this Division is p1ss poor.

The point is that people just like to moan and have a scapegoat. Martinez was criticised for his style of play even though he won the FA Cup and kept us in the Prem for three seasons (almost four) with an ever-decreasing budget. So what chance anybody else and we’ve had six managers since Martinez (plus another two as caretakers, including Barrow three times) and every one of them has been slated by a good few posters on here.

It would not surprise me if Cook gets sacked and I would not be surprised if he stays. Six full time managers in six years would suggest that sacking managers is not always the best policy especially at a club where the options are limited in who it can attract.

Many fans nowadays think success only comes with financial investment not true. In our very first season in the championship we came agonisingly close to promotion and succeeded the next. Did we have the best players NO but we had a manager with a strategy that was bang on. He had Duke and Roberts playing like world beaters. Warnock had no chance of taking Cardiff up to the premier but amazingly did because of his skill as manager. Let’s not lose sight of who we are and what we have achieved. We are Wigan Athletic always David and never Goliath we have never competed off the field but oh boy have we competed with the biggest on it. Since the prem we have gotten on this modern way of playing train and cant seem to get off. We no longer have the calibre of player to implement the lone striker playing with world class midfielders and wing backs. Until we go back to basics we will continue to appoint and sack managers frequently.

Or maybe try playing him in his correct position rather than sticking him out on the wing

This is so patronising from Cook

“There’s a little bit of anger inside the stadium among the Wigan fans, and I fully understand that,” the Latics boss acknowledged.

“If people think that, in this division, we’re just going to walk over and steamroll the opposition, they’re very, very, very, very far from the truth.

Says he understands but thinks we’re moaning as we’re not stuffing teams but then says we’re very very very wrong.

The fact is he doesn’t understand things are reaching a head as the performances are getting worse, the football is dire. We can’t score and never look like we can score in open play. Brentford were excellent an example of how we should AIM to play not the hoof it shite.

I would honestly like Cookie to be a big success for the Latics; but on Saturday he was already beaten in his head before we even kicked off. It was yet another team that he was heaping praise upon in his pre match amble; maybe preparing the ground for his post match analysis.
How often did you ever hear Bill Shankly & Bob Paisley eulogising about the forthcoming opposition? Their attitude was more about concentrating on their own game and let the opposition do all the worrying.

The psychology is really simple; a bit like a child who believes that he is going to be seasick or carsick, so it is no surprise when the inevitable happens. That feeling of trepidation gives the team a subliminal message that it is acceptable to get beaten; because the gaffer already believes that it a distinct possibility.

Who is our sports psychologist ? We have enough people in tracksuits ?

I totally agree with this LHL. Cook’s heros Shankly & co, in fact every successful manager would never waste their time talking about how good the other team is, it should be all about how good we are and giving us confidence.

His pre match talk must be killing our confidence.

There is no way of knowing if what he says to the press resembles anything he says in his pre match talk to the players.
The players will obviously be aware of what he says in his press conference but you would hope he tells the players to ignore the official press bullshit and actually tells them to concentrate on their own game and the opposition are shite anyway.

So we carry on with a negative manager who likes to praise the opposition before a match then make up crap about fans expecting us to “steamroll” opposition ?.
Stoke have gone with a manager who is excellent on the man management front something we need so badly.

Cook is clearly angry because he cannot fathom out why things are not happening once that happens for me it’s time to go.
I’m sure some of that press negativity overspills back into the changing room. I mean, you can’t say one thing then say another behind closed doors then expect players to listen.
And I don’t think you can draw comparisons with Martinez with Cook. Different era, different league, different budget and a totally chalk and cheese style of football.

His comments in turning on the supporters have done it for me.

Just reeks of someone who knows his job will be, or at least SHOULD be, in jeapordy. It was a bad comment that he shouldnt have made.

Its a hell of a low, firing that broadside at us. Nobody expects us to “steamroll the opposition”. We havent done that since the days of Ellington and Roberts, under Paul Jewell.

Ive even noticed a switch in the local press. Its not all ‘pro club’ cherry-on-the-turd comments now. The criticism is coming out…how can it not? We all have eyes. Last Saturday wasnt just a blip. Bottom three is where we are heading right now.

Or realistic and where we probably are as a club?
Problem is we have been spoilt as fans of Wigan Athletic for years which has raised expectations to the point that people believe we should be challenging in the top half of the championship. Our club is run well and we exist within our means. Others dont.

.

This is not about expectations as a whole and been spoilt, thats just are history and we did it on the smallest budget in the Prem.
This debate is about our current manager and players. I feel that with the correct guy in charge who decides not to keep fookin launching it to the big guy we should have no problem at finishing mid table.

We could do with a guy who never says I’ve not a clue, a guy who doesnt blame the fans for expecting too much someone who has the balls to win a game when its there on a plateau. A guy who’s not scared of dropping his favorite players when their playing sh1t.

We won the FA Cup on a dream a far bigger dream than staying in the Championship. If you feel staying in the Championship is asking too much especially after watching us against some of the big clubs in this league then you should pack in going.
Saturdays performance all be it against a good side was still spineless. We can’t change the squad till Jan but we can change the manager.
I don’t see many defending him now because there’s nothing to defend
And the manager responsible for winning the FA Cup was also criticised for his style of play.
Thing is on that cup run and on the occasions we played well he dropped his preferred style of play and played more direct attacking football like in the run up to the end of 2011/12 when we were magnificent.
At least Bob could change. Granted he was stubborn but not as stubborn as Cooky. Cook has the making of a good side if he played to the players strengths, starting with Moore and getting someone to play closer to him and use one of the attacking mids to get down the wing and get some crosses in to him. Cooky still has time to keep the support on his side but that will only happen with some sort of change in the way we play the game.

We have spent 7 seasons at this level and have been relegated twice. It’s not like we are an established Championship club or even a top tier club like if someone like Forest or Leeds were in this position. I think that is his point. He has barely taken us backwards has he?

As I said on the other thread there are plenty of our fans who seem to think we should be beating certain teams and should be well above where we are. Mentioning managers and players names that we have next to no chance of ever employing.

If I was managing a club that was punching above its weight and some Football Manager playing “expert” was having a go at me I would probably react as well.

You miss the point, Cooks current player choice and p1ss poor zip lob to the big lad are a couple o reasons why we are were we are.
If he grew some testicles he would have fookin gone for 3 pts at a struggling Derby side when it was for the taking but oh no that’s the fault of the fans who expect too much.
Cook do the right thing and leave. We need an ambitious manager who have the nuts to play to win and isn’t overwhelmed in the Championship which you clearly are.
You made a comment a few weeks back that you had no idea as to why the results weren’t coming. Well if you don’t know then that fans just waiting for the turd to come its way.
Cook didnt mention the first three seasons we had in this league. They were three very successful seasons and the third albeit with a stronger squad was a season where we had to completely rebuild after Bob walked out. We reached a cup semi and played the additional games in Europe too. The football in all three of those seasons was generally more positive and attractive too. W
