There are other factors in Wills performance last time out in the Champioship. Firstly he came around to being match fit late after sitting on his rigot in the Euros. He also missed a massive chunk of the latter end of the season. Powell was also injured that season. He was swapped and changed and didnt have a real consistent run. The tactics of Caldwell were so negative, Grigg was chasing shadows half the time. The support he got from attacking midfield or from another striker was naff and finally the football adopted by Yootha Flamin Joyce stifled any attacking players potential to perform well.
With the players Will has behind him this time he’ll be reet and if Powell can stay injury free and Macca can turn it on he’ll be flying.24 July 2018 at 5:30 pm #170557I can’t see Cookie changing from a system that has served him so well to date NL. But it is always good to have a plan B, guess we’ll have to wait n see.
This league will definitely be tougher for both players & manager.Know what you mean jimmy and I get the Macca signing but Wyke not when Cole is a spare part coz neither are getting in before Will unless injured or sold. Seems strange to strengthen a position we already have numbers .[/quote]
Fair to say our use of strikers was pretty limited last season (in numbers). If Cole is off then you can’t really blame him. He’s looked decent enough to me on the few occasions I’ve seen him.
2 up front is becoming fashionable again so maybe Cookie just might surprise us?25 July 2018 at 8:25 pm #170576One plan or strategy this time around seems to be the approach to pre-season in terms of match play or lack of match play. No games at home and just three games away. For a squad of twenty odd players this seems very little match time. I know there have been training games behind closed doors but is this a new trend that’s occuring in general or is it just an approach taken by Cookie and his coaches?
25 July 2018 at 8:40 pm #170577Never understood your obsession with playing 9000 friendlies Donny. They’re only fitness exercises anyway. Just an excuse to watch a game of footy (usually a boring one)
Is it because in 1952 when everyone played 442 and lumped it to the big man that they used to play 9000 friendlies when everyone was part time and couldn’t do the levels of training they do today to keep fit?
25 July 2018 at 9:20 pm #170578I don’t ever remember us playing 4-4-2 that way by lumping a ball up to a big striker. Paul Jewell’s game didn’t resemble lump ball at all when he took us to the Greed League. Also in 1952 it was 2-3-5.
Actually this time I wasn’t obsessing about friendlies, it was a genuine question on the subject of the thread ‘Cookies Plans’.
By the way you seem to have been missing a while, have you been on holiday with Vatty? Or away celebrating the saints win over our lodgers.25 July 2018 at 11:43 pm #170582Is it because in 1952 when everyone played 442 and lumped it to the big man
Stu didn’t say Latics did (although I would argue Heskey nodding down to Camara was such), but from my young days Toshack nodding down to Keegan was a fair example.
26 July 2018 at 12:58 am #170583Sorry boys but my interpretation of lumping it is the John Beck at Cambridge and Nob End style of play and I can not remember a Latics side ever starting with the intension to play that way.
3 August 2018 at 5:25 am #170728Just wondering how Cookies plans are going. Was it in his plans to go through all the pre-season without a left back or left sided wing back and still not to have filled that position on the day the new season starts.
Seems a bit wierd.
Wednesday are there for the taking and are the sort of side we really need to take maximum points from as they finished in the bottom half last season.
Question is can we do what we should be capable of with this sort of misplaced planning.3 August 2018 at 8:30 am #170729Just wondering how Cookies plans are going. Question is can we do what we should be capable of with this sort of misplaced planning.Your a proper little ray of sunshine lately lad, is there anything about the biggest little club in the world that pleases you. Donny, you support the most amazing club who has brought the town success after success and you have witnessed what no other fans have coming up through the leagues. Think back to Reeves, Sutherland and Koo, we were never meant to play in the top division. We were never meant to reach the league cup final play in Europe and only in our wildest dreams were we meant to win the FA Cup. Bask in the glory of being a Latic lad and enjoy every moment good or bad because it is our very identity and it is what has made our story the best ever written. You have become Victor Meldrew again marrer and “I don’t believe it”.
3 August 2018 at 12:42 pm #170731Ha ha, “I dont bloody well believe it” Brilliant. Gordan Milnes side played with a left back. It just doesnt seem right to go through a month of pre-season with a key position wide open. There must be some reason and the management surely must be trying.
I dont mind one little bit us being this seasons Burton in the Championship and I am not too arsed if we signed players this window or not other than players that are a necessity because thats in us to be underdogs and upsetting the applecart and like you say Nuns thats what we are brilliant at but this left back situation as been known for weeks. I would be totally happy if we even bloodied one of our own youngsters rather than babysit some other clubs youngster.
Season starts tonight but have we time to rectify this left back situation for tomorrow.
Fingers crossed nobody is leaving before the deadline day either.3 August 2018 at 1:46 pm #170732Could be worse Donny lad, you could be a Wednesday fan. They have no ‘Ins’ whatsoever so far!
3 August 2018 at 5:21 pm #170743There’s a lot of Free & Loan signings on that list fil. Is that saying something about the clubs finances in the Championship?

Question is can we do what we should be capable of with this sort of misplaced planning.Of course it wasn’t his plan to go all pre-season without a left back but real life isn’t as easy as Football Manager, FIFA or Fantasy Premier League in the Chorley Guardian or Nob End Echo.
Let’s see what tomorrow brings first shall we before we throw the toys out the pram?
3 August 2018 at 10:50 pm #1707553 August 2018 at 11:27 pm #170757Well that’s better a left back and cover for Dan Burn or Dunks in Kipre. Gibson too for some reason.
