Personally I hope they pay us off and let us build on the arena. 20k mixed standing/seating would be spot on

You need to be careful what you wish for bullshit. If these rich owners are only buying the club then what’s going to stop them relocating the team to an area whereby they can make money by upping the price of tickets and generating a larger level of support. The facts are that the latics, by their geographical location, will never fill the DW on a regular basis.

Do you really fancy a fortnightly trip to somewhere like Basingstoke to sit in your £350 a season seat alongside 15,000 curious Hampshire folk?

I wouldn’t mind to be honest. It’s only 20 odd minutes drive from where I live!!

As for the rest of it – some people are clearly winding up Wigan Rugby fans who are a little bit dumb to know that it would be very difficult &/or very costly for any new owner of Latics (& who also purchased Wigan Athletic Holdings, who in turn own most of the stadium company’s shares) to wriggle out of a legally binding lease that the rugby have.

In turn some Latics fans aren’t using all their grey matter if they actually think any new owners could just boot them out.

And you are correct in saying that if a new owner doesn’t purchase the stake in the stadium as part of the deal (although I would assume for the price of £20mill that they are) then technically the could seek to relocate the club – Its happened once so there’s little the FA are likely to do about it

Rugby fans live on a totally different planet in the main. They still actually think they are more famous and well known than Latics.

I’m with Stu on the price though. £20m seems cheap to me. Win the Euro Millions at the weekend and I’ll buy us.

If reports are true and it is a 20 million pound takeover I suggest it means the stadium is not part of it and will remain in its holding company. It cost 30 million when built so surely the reported bid would not get the Chinese the ground as well as the club for that price. What it means to us I haven’t a clue . Going to be an interesting few months for us.

They might well novate the Cuckoo’s contract to the Investment Company, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they won’t escape with some amendments to the detail terms and conditions. I would start with the rent

It doesn’t matter what it cost to build in 1999. The last accounts (up to May 2016) said Wigan Athletic Holdings had assets of £30m.
That value will have fallen since then (having already fallen by £5mill from the year before) so it’s entirely feasible that the company now has assets of £20-£25mill & quite often, if someone is looking to sell, they will go with a lower amount in order to incentivise the buyers

Very true Mon but I simply don’t see Mr Whelan with his business acumen and his legacy to the town letting the ground go on the cheap. There must be conditions in this takeover that ensures that both Latics and Warriors are in good health for the foreseeable future. He has performed miracles as owner and will undoubtedly want further success for both of Wigans clubs. I’m pretty sure that the great man will still have some interest and say in what happens after any takeover occurs.

One life one love one Wigan Athletic .

There isn’t much that a multi-millionaire wants, but one thing that I am 100% certain Mr Whelan wants, it is to have an ever-lasting legacy within his adopted town.

So far, for a Yorkshire-born Tory who played for Blackburn, he’s done a fantastic job in putting my home town on the world stage. Now its time for him to depart, does anybody seriously think that his last involvement in his adopted town would be to screw over the Rugby side? His legacy may be elevated to God-like status in certain quarters, but it would plummet to something worse than the Moors Murderers in the eyes of 99% of Wiganers. Even those who hold no affinity to either sport would be disgusted in a man who killed a sporting club that has been a constant in Wigan for well over 100 years. Him and his family would be shunned by the town he wants to call home and would forever be known as the bloke who killed the warriors.

I would imagine the retribution would extend to the new owners in an indirect source. Ground safety certificates being slow to arrive, road closures on match days, the removal of the bridge over the river douglas for “health & safety reasons”. There’s a whole lot of disruption the local authority could legally do.

However, unlike some on here and on C&W, I’m certain both clubs will continue to play at the DW stadium for a long time to come.
