Thank you. Again, very much appreciated.

        FA Cup.

We were always going to be relegated from the PL eventually because we just can’t compete financially and TBH personally, staying there was just a case of pissing people off. Even people in our own town wanted to see us relegated.

Winning the cup definitely took the sting of relegation away, but as Garswood said, that trophy (the most famous trophy in the world) will always have the words WIGAN ATHLETIC engraved on it and that can never ever be taken away.

I’m not afraid to admit that I still cry to this day when I watch that goal.

The greatest day of my life bar none. The name Wigan Athletic became known all around the globe that day Millions watched my incredible club pull off an incredible victory and the Latics story was rewritten forever. Like Egg, I still well up watching it back unlike the game that relegated us which is long forgotten. We have been blessed with promotion since then and hopefully another is on the way so we have still had that buzz success brings which the Prem would never afford us. Stu, your club is capable of achieving both staying in the Prem and cup success whereas we we always written off as relegation certs. Winning the cup was and still is everything.

FA Cup all day. What was a sickener though was having to play a vital relegation game away to Arsenal just a few days later, something I think the FA has now changed.

Anyway Stu, I don’t think winning FA Cup is going happen for you this year anyway as you could (possibly!) be playing away to Wigan in Round 4 ;) . Apart from that cup game another game I’ll never forget is when we beat you 3-2 a few years back. What a crazy game!! Same again please.

Once again, thanks for the replies chaps, I do appreciate them.

Nuneatonlatic – you would think we could, yeah, but Moyes has already said (publicly, too) that staying in the PL is priority over the cup, and that he “may” have to play a weaker team in the cup as a result. And then he did.

The same happened when we played the Gooners in the league cup quarter final – played two 18 year olds in midfield and went out as we had a “more important” PL game against the barcodes the following Saturday. Which we then lost, of course.

You’re totally right in that we SHOULD have enough to compete on at least two fronts…but our squad is old, unbalanced, scattered with overpriced crap, and as with every Christmas/NY since ever, half of them are injured right now. Hence this dilemma.

Travis – that’s one of the few games between us I’ve missed over the years. The one where you relegated us if I recall rightly? Colin Sammon?? Can safely say I speak on behalf of a shedload of Hammers when I say we’d be delighted if one of yours left one on that cheating **** Callum Wilson on the way through to the next round – and hopefully a tie against us. Always enjoyed the away games to your place (probably because I wasn’t at that 3-2!)

Any of you ever remember seeing a godawful, garish pink coach in the away car park with a massive flamingo on the side at a league game between our teams?

                We came up in that…

Cup for me, particularly with the European benefit afterwards.
Full marks to Stu for his approach, and full marks to the responders for responding properly and not dousing him with loads of abuse. Hopefully we can treat all of our own forum with the same respect!

I don’t think many of us would have swapped winning the cup for anything Stu. Being a small club kicking above our weight for eight years or so winning the FA Cup was probably and could also have been a once in a lifetime opportunity for us to see the club win a major honour. So for us to all have had the opportunity to be a part of that history making day was phenomenal.
Compare it with the equivalent of Barnet or Romford having a chance of winning the cup after rising through all the football pyramid.

FA Cup Stu …. no ifs and buts …. as others have said relegation was really only a question of ‘when’…..and the fact that we did 8 years up there I think is phenomenal in hindsight.

You OUGHT to prioritise the cup as even if you go down, again it’d only be a matter of ‘when’ you came back up ….but your ownership and the new stadium issue will make them desperate to stay up above all else.

Only went to Upton Park once for a Xmas/New Year game in our first Prem season (it was Bloody freezing but we won 2-0 !)…..can’t help thinking that you stopped being the real West Ham when you left one of the few unique English football grounds….that’s the way of it these days though

Although we had some good times in the PL, getting there in the first place was the greatest feeling ever. That was until that day in May 2013 when my little club won the FA Cup. It was and is what dreams are made of, and still gives me goosebumps whenever I hear or speak about it.
The Premier League was good while it lasted, but winning the FA Cup will last forever.

Winning the Cup over Prem survival any day Stu.

Thanks for visiting and being so courteous all the best for the future except in the 4th round if we both get through.

FA Cup Stu, your own Mark Noble was asked the question “Lift the FA Cup or top four finish?” prior to the 6th round tie with Manchester United in 2016. His reply was “FA Cup, every time.” Is he a Latics fan?

Without a doubt THE CUP! If you don’t ‘do’ football, you don’t get it. But if you do …. most will understand. They whole saga. The day, the game, the Wembley, the pre match pints, the pre match curry, the atmosphere, the incidents in the game – Zabaleta getting sent off, the pre final games. I know the exact spot I was at when we scored 3 goals in 3 minutes at Everton. I nearly crashed the car. The goal. The momentary silence of disbelief, and in the hush someone said “it’s gone in” and then utter mayhem. The total journey. Every time I go past Wembley on the train I can remember so much so vividly. It was a truly wonderful journey. I can fritter hours away looking at everyones You Tube clips of the trip. Added to all that, I have to say the fantastic way the Man City fans were …. who were all so congratulatory and so honorable in defeat, (I have to say a lot kinder that the Arsenal fans the following year when they won)!! Added to all that it was a really good game of football … not only because we won.

And then the European Tour ….. more ‘impossible’ memories if we were in ‘just’ in the Prem.

I suppose that is just a long way around to say THE CUP!! Guess what my screen saver is!!

The cup for me all day long, it’s what dreams are made of.

Have to agree with GoalsGalore on the way the City fans were on the way back up the M6 a credit to their club, unlike them Arsenal wankstains a year later.
