We Sell: Nzogbia for 12 million
Rodallega for 10 million
Figueroa for 5 million
Boselli for 5 million
I think you’ll find their resale values will probably halve if relegation happens.
Unless a relegation pay-cut clause was written into their contracts, the club will want them off the wage bill ASAP. The players will want out, and the first half-decent bid will be accepted.
Relegation, whilst not disasterous, would be a bad thing, unless the wage bill reduces. Remember as well that the crowds will drop by about 6,000 per game.
I can understand the bit about Latics being out of their depth financially in this division
I can understand the bit about Latics current financial situation not being allowed to go on indefinitely
I can even understand the bits about how you (& others) mighty enjoy things a bit more in the Championship
BUT
quite how any of that equates to Bobby doing a good job is beyond me. Reading between the lines you seem to be saying that you think Bobby was appointed with the brief of taking us down & he’s doing this in such spectacular fashion that that is the reason why he is doing a good job
I find that truly bizarre
I’ve come on here this morning, and oh my god, all the ‘knockers’ are out in force, ‘Martinez this’ and ‘Martinez that’. For god’s sake, give it a rest and look at the overall picture of our club, and it’s financial situation.
Last weeks financial revelations, reveal that we are a club living above it’s means. Our outgoings totally outweigh our incomings. Frankly, we cannot continue much longer as a ‘going concern’, unless things drastically change.
For this to happen, we need to cut our operating costs. Basically, the wage bill needs cutting. As a club with our support and income, we can’t afford to pay these 30 grand a week wages. We have a large debt of the loan borrowed from Barclays, which Mr Whelan has secured until next year. But after that, who knows what might happen?
The long and short of it is, we will be better off going down a level, getting the parachute payments, selling off a few of our ‘better’ players for millions, and at the same time cutting the wage bill drastically. Ok, we’ll have to still replace those players. But at Championship level, we’ll be able to do that with £500.000 signings on lower wages. We’ll be far better doing that, than staying up for another season of battling relegation, and further debt building.
The novelty of the Premiership has well and truly gone now, and I don’t know about anybody else, but I’d much sooner us HAVE a club playing at a lower level, rather than us battle on in the top flight for another season or so, and end up going bust, ending up with us not having a team at all.
It’s the bigger picture, and like it or not, that’s the situation. Perhaps Martinez isn’t doing such a bad job, eh?
Good post the reality is we are going down but at least we will have a football club to support and pride in what we have acheived.
The league is a stagnant boring one with the same old boring teams battling relegation year after year.
As Brian Clough used to say “i like roast beef and roast potatoes on a sunday but i done want it every day of the bloody week!”
That sums up the Premier league for me.
A change will be as good as and rest-bye bye to the annoying Jonny come latellys

Exactly, mate.
It amazes me how many people are putting the importance of Premiership football, above our clubs long term future.
I do wonder if because it seems so important to these people, if some of them will not come watching if we go down.
To those of you who want us to go down.
Will you want us to came back up?
You know, last game in the championship and we need a point to go up. Which team would you support?
Just a thought like.

Frankly John, yes…..but only if it’s in our club’s best interests.
I.E. Can we afford it?
Was having this chat wit someone on here the other day, and we were in agreement that to become something of a yo-yo side, such as go down for a couple of seasons, then get promoted for a season or two, and then down again. Plenty of parachute payments, and some promotions along the way.
By all accounts, our finances show we can’t continue as a top flight club. We can’t afford it.
Rather than us go bust, I’d sooner watch us at a lower level.
So we may as well pack up our bags now, The reason we are in this position is that we dont score enough goals and that we concede goals like they are going out of fashion, and that is down to a certain person, and for us being better off going down, well i would love to hear mr whelans response to that one, your post just shows how much you love martinez no matter what he as done to the club as a manger, ps if you were to ask all the championship clubs were they would like to be, i would guess they would all say the prem, but eh not you, you want us down
No, I want us to still have a club to support, be that in 2013, 2025, 2037, or whatever.
I don’t care what level we are playing at, as long as we are still in business. And we cannot continue to operate at this level.
I cannot believe that any genuine Wigan Athletic supporter will be selfish enough put the price of Premiership football above the overall value of us surviving as a club.
Can you not comprehend the position we are in? As things stand, the debt is secured until 2012. So we have a year to rectify things.
we will still have our debt if we go down if not more, so we may as well get another fifty mill yes fifty mill, which is 34 mill more if we go down, not including the sale of nzogbia at 10 mill, so that would 44mill, so you want us to go down makes a load of sense,
We go down, we get the parachute payments.
First season, 20 million.
Second season, 15 million.
Third season, 10 million.
Fourth season, 5 million.
We Sell: Nzogbia for 12 million
Rodallega for 10 million
Figueroa for 5 million
Boselli for 5 million
Plus one or two others might go, someone may come in for Alcaraz, and also Warnock at QPR is a big fan of Moses, having managed him at Palace. Don’t be surprised if he comes in for him. I think Di Santo might go back to Argentina, as well.
Through selling those players, we would substantially cut the wage bill.
That’s why we’ll be better off going down. Stay up and any money we get will just come in onme hand and go out the other, with more besides.
Are you one of these people who is ‘stuck’ on seeing us playing Liverpool, United, Chelsea, etc? Why? We aren’t good enough for this level. Why not just enjoy us playing on a more level playing field?
HINDLEY: You don’t know what Whelan’s brief has been to Martinez. Perhaps he’s had his calculator out and worked out the things I have just stated above?
It may be a case of ‘taking a fall’ to pick ourselves up again, rather than it get to the point where the administrators are knocking on the door, and the chubsters are sending out party invites.
What’s more important? The club surviving for many years to come, or battling out a season or two more at this level, before we are all over Sky Sports, as they go live to Fraser Daignton as he watches the administrators arriving at the club, and interviews a stereotypical Wiganer outside the ticket office who says “Latics have always struggled, it’s a rugby town” (and they are wearing a rugby hoodie)
Balls to the Premiership. It’s too much for us as a business (at this present time) and we are better off all round out of it.
How on earth has Martinez spent 20 million? Go on, break it down.
Boselli? We’ll still be paying a chunk of his wages, you know, and as soon as he comes back, I’m assuming Genoa will not want him, we’ll be paying him the full £38,000 a week again. Are you naive enough to think that because he’s gone on loan we’re not paying him? It doesn’t work like that.
May be not 100% accurate but I have not included Alcaraz and the other Chuckle brother Stoikovic and quite a few others who wont have played for nothing.
Not a clue where you got 4.5m and 4m for stam and di santo.
Di santo was about 1 mil with fee’s to go up to 2m, and stam was 2m.
Alcaraz was also free along with steve caldwell and stjokvic was on loan
Legolad as I stated in my original post not all the fee’s were accurate as most of our signings are undisclosed. But if you think that loan signings and free transfers don’t cost money then you should stick to Lego.
Let me spell it out for you, when we signed Arry DeZueew from Barnsley because he was a free transfer instead of paying Barnsley say £3m we pay DeZueew £1.5m signing on fee plus his wages. This meant we could pay him a hell of a lot more than Barnsley so he signed. It would be the same with Titus who was on £40K a week no transfer fee so the player gets better wages. That is why players are so eager to run down there contracts it’s a license to print money for them.
So Lego as you can see there is no such thing as free in football.
