Wigan Athletic sign Leonardo Da Silva Lopes from Peterborough United for an undisclosed fee
19-year-old has been subject to Premier League interest in recent seasons but has agreed to a four-year deal at the DW Stadium
Chairman David Sharpe: “This is a really exciting acquisition for us and I’d like to place on record my thanks to Darragh MacAnthony and Barry Fry at Peterborough for their respective parts in this deal.”
We are delighted to confirm the signing of 19-year-old midfielder Leonardo Da Silva Lopes from Peterborough United for an undisclosed fee.Da Silva Lopes, who has signed a four-year-deal at the DW Stadium, has attracted interest from Premier League clubs since bursting onto the scene at the age of 16 when he made his Posh debut in a League One win over Crawley Town.
Since that debut, the skilful midfielder has made 108 appearances in all competitions for the Posh.
Born in Lisbon, Da Silva Lopes has also been involved with Portugal U21 squads despite just turning 19 midway through last season.
An incredibly exciting prospect, manager Paul Cook said:
“Leo has been one of the best young players in the EFL over the past couple of seasons, this is a really strong addition to our squad.
“I am looking forward to working with Leo and believe he will embrace the challenge of Championship football here at Wigan Athletic.
“Everyone has to remember Leo is just 19 and has his best years ahead of him but he certainly has the foundations to become a top level player.
“Thanks to the Chairman for his work in getting this deal completed so early in the window, which will give Leo the chance to come in and work with us straight away in pre-season.”

5 June 2018 at 10:14 pm #169504Sounds like a promising signing and a good bit of business too, providing he makes the grade.
Well done again to the board, things are looking good.5 June 2018 at 11:40 pm #169508Must be good.
Here’s the predictable comment from a Posh board:
“LDSL personally though he was garbage yep local lad always like them to do well, can’t see him being anything other than a bench warmer if he’s gone for 7 figure sum thats cracking business but also sums up to much money goes on bang average footballers now.”
Rearrange the following : grapes sour.6 June 2018 at 12:27 am #169510Local lad? Which part of Portugal is Peterborough in?
6 June 2018 at 12:44 am #169511Let’s hope he plays him and he doesn’t end up a 7 figure bench warmer
6 June 2018 at 3:51 am #169512Has he only scored 2 league goals or can I not find his stats?
6 June 2018 at 11:51 am #169517That’s a lot of money for a 19 year old especially someone I’d never heard of. One of the players of the EFL last season?, still, it seems like he’s held in high regard
By his agent
6 June 2018 at 3:35 pm #169525Let’s hope he’s better than his stats suggest.
6 June 2018 at 8:48 pm #169526And yet there are people on here who think players like Jacobs and Grigg aren’t worth 1 million…..
Of course they are. Modern climate.
As us paying it for a 19 year old prospect proves.

Sorry to disagree, Dave, but it’s about investment for the future.
It’s how the stock exchange works.
You pick out a prospect that looks like it will do the business, and you buy. Maybe at an inflated price, but you gain your asset and have it there to nurture. If it does the business then you sell at a great profit. If it bombs, then “that’s business”. If you are like us and look after the books carefully even the odd “bomb” can be cushioned.
If you’re Villa or Sunderland or whoever, you don’t invest with a careful risk strategy, and crash.
Will Grigg may command over a million based on his goal scoring record last season, and his fame due in no small part to the song.
But Jacobs? No way.7 June 2018 at 2:14 am #169534Has he only scored 2 league goals or can I not find his stats? One more than David Perkins scored for us, and there was nowt wrong with Perks.
