I have not posted on here for a good while as I couldn’t get my head around all the Martinez supporters as he was pathetic and I believed he was taking us down without a fight!
I wanted a change in formation and some commitment and it was never looking like coming.
Since March, I have no idea what has gone on but the players are putting their all in, manager is passionate and we look like a proper football team and I can’t believe I am saying it but we play proper football now and when we pass we look like we know what we are doing. We didn’t look like we knew what we were doing before so maybe time is what we needed.
I am the as happy as anyone who supports Wigan that we have done what we have done and I admit that I was wrong with my comments against Martinez.
Well done Martinez, well done supporters and well done to the lightsiders for believing in what we have and maybe I will listen next time instead of stropping at the first time of trouble.
If we go down then we will bounce back and if we don’t go down then I have to say, its Martinez who will have saved us.

From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!30 April 2012 at 1:13 am #86204Takes a big man to do that, Nat.
Not sure many of our other Darksiders will have the balls to follow suit.
That said, we haven’t survived yet but the two good results today certainly helped.

Oh sorry – I appear to have posted in the wrong forum

30 April 2012 at 3:37 am #86217I don’t have a problem with anyone who wishes to express a dislike of Martinez and his style of football. What I do find objectionable is the belligerent manner in which some of those have gone about expressing their views. A sort of arrogance which assumes an, I am right and you are stupid to assume otherwise, type attitude.
Those posters know who they are and right now are conspicuous by their absence

Correct, I’ve been saying that for years.

Here here, all those Darksiders who said they wouldnt go again must have missed out on some cracking games.
Have faith in Bob finishing a job. No matter where we end up at the end of the season, and next for that matter. We have given it a go and stuck with a manager who has come come good.

But Sammy, did you not get the message that it has been scientifically proven that all of those who have been supporters of Martinez are deluded, blinkered, clueless, Bob’s Bunnies? We know nowt and only supported The Spanish One/Rock Bottom Bob because he wears nice brown shoes / has a nice scarf / makes nice paella.
Considering Saturday’s first half was one of the best, if not the best, performances by a Wigan Athletic team seen at the DW stadium, this board was surprisingly quiet after the game.
I once argued that the reason this message board looks so anti-Martinez is that immediately after a defeat there are a dozen different threads calling for the manager’s head and declaring him useless and all that support him of having blind faith, yet, those that have always supported Martinez are not as prone to compulsive, irrational, unhinged outbursts after a win. (Incidentally, last time I argued this, the reasoned argument I got back was that ‘He’s clueless and out of his depth – end of.’)
There are several poster who I would guarantee to have started a thread minutes after the final whistle if the result on Saturday had been the other way round, but as there is nothing to jump up and down and scream about, they’re absent.
As you’ve said, it’s not the opinion that the problem, it’s the way in which some people have expressed that opinion, and at times have even goaded supporters of Martinez after a defeat with a sneering ‘told you so’ attitude.
30 April 2012 at 4:13 pm #86242Job is not done, but all I ever asked is that we fight for everything in a game as that is what we are all about, and we are doing that now.
In any other club Martinez would have been sacked as e were playing poor stuff and although we still at times look very uncomfortable with the ball, we do look so much better.
Anyway, darksiders, lightsiders which ever side I am sure we are all as happy as each other that we have turned this around.
If anybody has Blackburn tickets, I will have a pair and pay £70 commission for each if they are on offer and will pick them up in person. Paying a sales commission is a legal transaction as the inflated fee will be for the handling and collection from the ticket office.
30 April 2012 at 4:20 pm #86243all I ever asked is that we fight for everything in a game as that is what we are all about, and we are doing that now.I think there is a tad more to it than that…
30 April 2012 at 4:25 pm #86245Bobby has made alot of mistakes during his time at Latics – from some of his signings, to some of his tactics, to some of his team selections, to some of his substitutions (& the timing of them), playing players out of position, imposing a system on players who didn;t have teh skill set for it. No problem there as such as everybody makes mistakes
I for one have stated from a relatively early stage (I think the Spurs defeat) that I didn’t think he was up to the job & that he seemed unable to learn from his mistakes & that the same ones seemed to be made over & over & over again – I once likened him to that Homer Simpson sketch you can see on Channel 4 where he keeps trying to grab the 4 pack of beer that is on the leccy cables.
Last season he seemed to be starting to go down the right track only for N’Zogbia to go & this season seem to be a step backwardsI did however also say that I would like nothing more than for Bobby to prove me wrong and whilst there are still 2 games of this season to go & the start of next season to come, he seems to be doing exactly that.
Bobby has to take great credit for switching to the 3 at the back system because it suits those players down to the ground – Figueroa looks reborn, Alacaraz finally looks like he knows what he gets paid for doing & Caldwell to be frank looks like a different player. He also then realised an essential part of the new system was an out & out left wing back & he got one
After losing Diame to the ACN & struggling in January he gave McArthur a chance as a sub & had the nouse to notice the improvement he could bring & the guts to keep him in the side. Likewise Maloney got his chance away at Norwich & Bobby was able to see the extra “oomph” this gave the team going forward & dropped Gomez.
Unlike last season where there was not noticeable change other than the players form improving this season has turned around in 3 stages where I think, as manager, Bobby must take complete & total credit for.
I don’t believe that this was what Bobby was always looking towards in terms of the system otherwise it could & would have been introduced long before but I think Bobby & his team (who also took alot of stick off many) realised in the Autumn that what they had been trying wasn’t working & had the nouse to devise one that would suit the squadFull marks to em coz I’ve never seen a Latics side (in any division) to look as tactically astute (when they need to attack they attack as a team, when they need to defend they defend as a team) as this one does now – long may it continue

All you need to do now is concede to the fact we play with three forwards (more apparent than ever v newcastle) :P
30 April 2012 at 4:52 pm #86253It’s an inter-changable formation but one that operates by & large with only 1 striker
When pushing forward there are 2 more advanced midfielders whose job it is to get forward in support of that striker but who, when possession is lost are expected to get back behind the ball & leave said striker up front on his own :PUnfortunately I was coughing & spluttering my way up & down the line (not been well!!) at Alsager Town v Ashton Athletic on Saturday so wasn’t at the game to be able to agree with your statement from the Newcastle game ;)
PS – Alsager won 3-2 & Ashton had a man sent off
30 April 2012 at 4:55 pm #86254All credit to the manager and staff for a fantastic turn around and the best football this club has probably ever played.I hope that we can start the season in august this year (provided i’m not tempting relegation fate)but the jungle drums increasingly beat that a change of manager maybe afoot !
