Whelan said: ‘I will be sitting down with Roberto Martinez very soon to discuss budgets. Some players will be staying, some players will be going.
‘But one thing we won’t do is go the way of Portsmouth and Hull, and just throw money around. We won’t be stupid about it.’
Is this the cue for us to start blaming everything, including the Icelandic volcano, on Whelan ? ;)
Bloody rubbish Whelan not risking the long term future of the club by spending £50m this summer.
28 April 2010 at 2:08 am #31007Perhaps this guy could help locate the fabled war chest…
28 April 2010 at 2:11 am #31009Terrible, negative way to end the season….I mean, surely we should be going out spending millions and paying players £75K+ a week and winning the FA cup and then playing top European clubs at home…..after all some our fans will have seen what Pompey have done in the past
Obviously, we wont worry about not having a club to support until the time comes, then of course that will be Whelan’s fault
28 April 2010 at 2:14 am #31010Well he has a good excuse now to explain the next delivery of Championship players !!
28 April 2010 at 10:50 am #31017If we lose players and don’t spend on replacements, we will end up relegated, just need to be sensible about how much is spent, let’s hope the players that we want to offload bring in some revenue.
28 April 2010 at 11:07 am #31018Looking at the three relegated clubs, Hunt, Dindane & Eagles may be shrewd purchases that would add quality to your squad for little outlay.
28 April 2010 at 11:41 am #31019ive got news for whelan niether will i be throwing cash away ;)
28 April 2010 at 1:34 pm #31037I will be but I feel there will be more empty seats next season as the novelty has all but gone now ! Obviously 3 or 4 games will attract the plastics but on the whole I would hazard a guess at an average home gate in the region of 17000 !

Some of our best buys have been on the cheap. We don’t need to spend huge money to get good players.
I don’t think championship players are the way to go unless we want to play in the championship. With the amount of games to watch on the internet you can do a lot of good overseas scouting prep from your own home.
Its probably a good thing the budget is low because that means we need to sell to buy. We have too many mediocre players which we need to offload.
28 April 2010 at 8:20 pm #31070Well;l ive stated that after reading the Pompey report i would change my views on Whelan and i stick by it. I hope the scouts have been out in force across the world and we get some good cheapo foreigners. I think Bobby may have learned his lesson with gambling on championship players. Hope so anyway

Obviously 3 or 4 games will attract the plastics but on the whole I would hazard a guess at an average home gate in the region of 17000 !Last season there was huge upheval at the club, not to mention the country itself was in a recesion.
On the field Martinez was learning the job, trying to fashion a team from the scraps he’d been left with, while off it we were reactionary rather than proactive. It took until January until we began to look and act like a Premiership club.
Reading what Martinez and Whelan are saying, hearing about whats planned regarding season tickets, marketing etc., we seem to be far better prepared for the coming season.

Any information regarding the season tickets and marketing No1
28 April 2010 at 11:13 pm #31096Theres going to be new family and U21 season tickets, the family tickets in particular are meant to be very good value. They’re considering some themed matches, but most important of all they now have a better idea of what marketing and offers work best.
I guess we’ll see in the weeks and months ahead.

Good news I am pleased that the marketing staff are getting into shape
28 April 2010 at 11:45 pm #31101When I hear of WAFC marketing ideas the words polish, cant and t u r d spring to mind !! 17000 is a realistic figure for next seasons average gate. In fact I am being slightly generous at that figure !!
