As for my own personal opinion, which carries far more weight than anybody else’s at the club based on a number of years playing in the Wigan Amateur League and 50 odd years watching, I have yet to be convinced either of them are any better than those currently favoured.

The manager has made it quite clear he doesn’t fancy certain players by omitting them from the team altogether. Have you ever played the game ? let me explain, some players hate training , period but on match day their a different animal. My son is coming up for 19 and plays at a decent amatuer level. He hates training and like a few others trains like a pig but on matchday he gets fired up and is a total different character, captains his side and regular M0TM awards and player of the season awards. If you gave out the same awards for training he’d get a polished turd.Would you run your bollocks to the ground in training if you knew beforehand you would def not be playing no matter what you do ? it’s a vicious circle, it’s time to give others a run in the team, you never know. So he drops Delort, he plays in the reserves and scores and , yep , not even the bench. Do I know if he’s any good on a matchday ? no, and neither does MacKay because we both haven’t seen him but there’s not just Delort there’s a full second team not even getting a sniff.
As it stands at Wigan, players who are fancied by the way they “train” more professional whatever they are not getting the results, period. MacKay’s plan isn’t working with player selection so I say give the lads who don’t get a run a chance or what’s the point of a squad ?? we can’t be any poor than we are at the moment. If you don’t you will never know.
I would point to Riera more than Delort who has suffered the most. By all reports there are 3 La Liga teams after his services so they must know something MacKay doesn’t.
If we clearout the squad in Jan how long will it take for the new additions to bed in to the reserves cause that’s were their they’ll be heading….training ? were would Paul McGrath be without training….

Your son is an amateur player who trains (probably) twice a week. We are talking about professional players who the manager sees in training and during practice matches every day.
Paul McGrath and Ledley King played on the back of their reputations. When they were at the start of their careers they would have had to train just as hard as the other players otherwise they wouldn’t have made it. Once they’d made it and everyone knew how good they were, then they could ease off on the training.
Delort and Riera don’t have any reputation to fall back and if they look poor in training, they won’t get picked.
Incidentally, has everyone forgotten how bad they both looked when they have played?

How bad they’ve looked when?
If you’re bought as a hold up man and you play shite then that’s a different story to banging goals in against Real Madrid or 26 in a season and being asked to do it, when you’ve never done it.
It’s like asking a joiner to fix my car.
On a separate note, I watched Delort try to play on his own in his first game at Blackburn and he worked his absolute tripe off and all anyone could say around me was how good he was going to be with a partner or at least some support. At 1 nil up after 60 minutes we looked pretty decent. Then something happened when it went 1-1 and we have never recovered. He was tried up on his own for the next 2 games I think and got dropped never to be seen, similar to Riera.
Why folk think they’ve been given a fair crack at it is beyond me and they keep banging the goals in it he reserves playing together, while Fortune zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

If a player scores on a regular basis for the development squad but supposedly doesn’t impress his manager in training, thus not getting a regular start in the first team, then my question has to be what is the point of the development squad? The manager has more or less stuck to the same line up/ formation for a few games now with a modicum of success ( One win away to a decent side ) but on the whole it just hasn’t worked and so one must question his stubborness! On the odd occasion that Fortuné and Riera have found themselves on the pitch at the same time we actually looked threatening and so my final question must be, why have they not been used from the start? Riera has featured in 13 games this season and Delort in 8. I’ve seen nothing to suggest either may be a better option to Fortune and our two managers this season clearly feel the same.
Scoring against the Dog ‘n Duck / Morcambe Reserves at Christopher park may be well and good, but it’s meant as a nursery to develop young first and second year professionals, not for million pound strikers to show how good they are by banging ‘em in against teenagers.
Incidentally, when Riera scored 13 in La Liga last season, it was as part of a 4-2-3-1 formation – so it would appear he can play as a lone striker. Not sure what formation Delort is used to.
I hope one or both of them are given a chance and come good – but I doubt it.

So Johnny, why do the managers play them in those games? Surely it is pointless and if anything risky because they could get injured!
I’ve had a scout round the other latics forums tonight just to see others thoughts and where my views stood in the bigger picture of things.
Interesting. Not far from a Malky out campaign in the offing. This place is actually the exception to what I’m reading elsewhere, not that that’s a bad thing.
Nobody has yet answered the question from the happy clappers as to why you think it’s a good idea to let this Malky bloke have a clear out and bring in his own players when in reality he could be gone in the not too distant.
