First: to rob the Mackems
Second: to rob McClaren
Keep it up Tics !
Okay, the ball hit crackers on the hand as he was falling in the box; so would have been a harsh penalty IMO. The shot was going about 6yds wide in any case ! They don’t like losing to little Wigan, do they
4 February 2019 at 12:37 am #176032Cant see how we were robbed buy taking a proven L1 striker off your hands.
But I’ll raise you a Macmanaman, Gibson & Vaughan.
4 February 2019 at 2:24 am #176033Who collectively cost very little. Are you guys not aiming higher than league one? If yes I’m unsure as to how this is good value?

Perhaps you weren’t completely robbed but you have paid about £2.5M too much. There should be no need at all to spend such silly money to get out of League One.
Funny you mention those three above as James Vaughan on loan or for a much much smaller fee would most likely have got you the goals needed to gain promotion.

Grigg could be in their plans to do well in the Championship just like Vaughan was in Cooks plans twelve months ago. Wonder if Grigg will be out on loan this time next year.4 February 2019 at 5:10 am #176036Cant see how we were robbed buy taking a proven L1 striker off your hands. But I’ll raise you a Macmanaman, Gibson & Vaughan.
Gibson and Vaughan have both shown themselves to be very poor signings. To be fair to Vaughan though playing up top on his own has done him a disservice. Gibson!!! well he is just awfull. Mcmanaman!!! As fans we have no idea. Cook wont play him.
4 February 2019 at 11:37 am #176037Not that I think he will answer, but I’m sure the McManaman question will come up on Wednesday night.
4 February 2019 at 11:54 am #176038The fee may appear high for someone who constantly ends up on the bench or out on loan whenever he gets to the Championship, but if Cook was being honest about Grigg needing the likes of Massey, Jacobs and Powell to be at his most effective, then we have internationals Aiden McGeady and Lewis Morgan on the wings and a midfield that, Max Power aside, have all played regularly at a higher level, so the service is there. The only reason we haven’t been battering sides this season is because we played Maja up top, and he was a raw kid who, although very talented, would find himself in the wrong position and convert one chance in five.
There’s also mutterings that we are interested in taking Powell on a free if we return to the Championship.

There’s 4 or 5 clubs in League One who’d be to differ with you. Griggs not even played yet and you’ve already booked a spot in the Championship ? Funny that.
I’m sure Powell already knows were he’s off Celtic probably been favourites especially with Champions League football more than likely to be on the table.
I liked Grigg, I always thought that Cook didn’t utilise him enough and play to his strengths but that’s football for you. Even the greats in the game move on.
Possible £4 million ? I’m sorry but that’s just too much.4 February 2019 at 2:04 pm #176041Possible £4 million ? I’m sorry but that’s just too much.Sorry but if Sunderland can sell an unproven Maja for £3.5mill (or the equivalent of what they still owed the club who they’ve transferred him to for a previous transfer) then Will Grigg for a possible £4mill looks like a steal!!
To be honest, if what Sunderland’s owner says is true & Latics changed the asking price then the sale of Maja for that £3.5mill probably had a lot to do with it

I really don’t know why you are not Champions already with the squad you have.
As I said earlier you shouldn’t have needed to spend another £4M to get out of that league, surely Wyke and Watmore are good enough for League One.5 February 2019 at 2:03 am #176048Here’s my take on why we are not:
1. Watmore is feeling his way back after two years out with career-threatening injuries. Wyke got crocked at Burton in his 2nd game (we signed him with an injury) and has just returned to action. Neither are up to speed.
2. For all his skill, Maja was positionally naïve, and the through balls played often ended up as goal kicks because he was caught on his heels. If he had Watmore’s pre-injury pace, then he’d be a hell of a player, but he hasn’t, and whilst his touch and finishing couldn’t be faulted, he was often in the wrong place at the wrong time. Grigg may not have pace, but he knows where to be at the right time and can stick the ball in the net. He’ll get no end of chances too, as we create around 20 chances a game.
3. Finally, and perhaps controversially(!), clubs have been raising their game for their fixture with Sunderland. This is backed up with stats. In our first 23 opponents, 15 lost their next game and only 4 won. Two of the three sides to benefit from these fixtures were Portsmouth (3 wins) and Barnsley (2 wins).

That’s a fair enough assesment.
There is no doubt that Will Grigg will get goals, but will he get that many more than your existing strikers would have done, to make a difference?
You will gain promotion no doubt, but I can’t help thinking you would have gained promotion anyway and could have saved £4M.5 February 2019 at 11:43 am #176050It’s Harry Enfield’s Loadsa Money syndrome or Big Dick Syndrome ‘Youve got it so wave it around.’
