8 February 2019 at 8:48 pm #176145Never really understood what makes Sunderland a big club. Is it the big stadium that is usually half empty? Is it the fact that they get about 10% of their population watching them? It certainly isn’t their honours list is it?Does that mean Liverpool (Population 897,000, but only 7% attend a game, last league title 1990, last FA Cup win 2006 and last league cup win 2012) are a smaller club than the Latics. Are Spurs not a big club because they cant fill Wembley every week?
In fact, by your theory, every club bar Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal & Leicester are smaller than Wigan, because they’ve won jack shit since 2013.
If you disagree, please define your criteria for a “big club”.
8 February 2019 at 9:45 pm #176146I think Sunderland are a big club, big stadium lots of history capable of drawing big crowds, able to sign joe hinnigan for a big fee etc. Stop bickering chaps mutty posts some good and valid stuff, he can’t help being burdened by his choice of club, after all if he is like me his club was passed down and not chosen!
8 February 2019 at 10:12 pm #176148Oh but he can help being burdened by who he supports because he changed his team when they hit hard times. He was a Latics fan but when we were asked to put our hands in our pockets to help he turned and ran.
And let’s face it he was never going to run to Chester or Rochdale or some other footballing pauper was he?
8 February 2019 at 10:18 pm #176149Think how Peterborough celebrated when they beat Wigan 3-2 last season and multiply it by 10, and you may just have an idea of how everyone views Sunderland in Div 3.
There was 6099 in attendance for Latics away trip to Peterborough.
They must have had one hell of a re development to London Road over he close season to get 60,990 in for the visit of you egotistic w*****s.
I love the way you twist things to suit your personal agenda. 6000 fans can clap politely to celebrate, sing loudly and jump up and down to celebrate a bit more, or go wild and invade the pitch to celebrate even more – it doesn’t take more fans for those 6000 original fans to celebrate more.
I’ll leave the petty name-calling for those who have lost the debate.
Please explain your reply I am bamboozled by it and can’t get my head around what you are trying to say, you’ve lost the plot and the debate Mutty.
As for ‘petty name calling’ it isn’t petty it is the truth, you are very eogotitic and as other posters have pointed out you seem to have delusion of grandeur.
Newcastle fans are very similar, perhaps you should join together and become Tyne & Wear Utd FC, you might be able to call yourself a big club then.
Last point, Middlesboro are up there in the North East and their fans don’t seem to spout rubbish all the time.
8 February 2019 at 10:25 pm #176150England was a big National team in the previous decade, 1966.
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!8 February 2019 at 11:06 pm #176151He was a Latics fan but when we were asked to put our hands in our pockets to help he turned and ran.Funny you mention that on a thread that talks about the game at Peterborough.

Liverpool aren’t a big club. I had a this discussion with a St Helens based Liverpool fan a couple of years ago, let’s call him SG (Scouse Git). When I mentioned I was a Latics fan he used the term ‘Tiny Club’. I challenged him with what his criteria is used for a ‘Big Club’. He had a daft smirk on his face and didn’t reply, so I asked again.
SG: “It’s about gates innit?”
GA: “Is it, how big?”
SG: “40 – 50,000.”
GA: “So that’s United, City, Arsenal and Spurs?” The smirk reappeared.
SG: “No, 50,000.”
GA: “Are Newcastle a big club, they get 50,000 on?”
SG: “No, Newcastle are not a big club. Anyway it’s about winning trophies, European Cups.”
GA: “Are Forest a big club? They won the European Cup, twice.”
SG: “No, Forest aren’t a big club. It’s about winning league titles.”
GA: “Like the Premier League?”
He was just about to say yes when the penny dropped.

Because they’ve moved the goalpost, I’ve got two years to wait!
13 February 2019 at 2:04 am #176235Well the club with the biggest crowds couldn’t beat a club with one of the lowest crowds tonight. Oh and that Will Gregg fella or whatever is name is missed an absolute sitter! Dick Turpin rides again! :P
