A chap we were chatting to in the West Stand yesterday was telling us about how as a Wigan he felt discriminated against.Apparently the local MP was selected given the chance to stand for parliament from a women only group of candidates. We were all taken back by this blatant act of sexual discrimination. Kettle and span comes to mind!
Is this really correct?23 November 2014 at 8:10 pm #136143yes that is correct the labour party said both safe seats at Makerfield and Wigan the candidates had to be women Lisa Nandy won Wigan and Yvonne Fovarque won Makerfield year 2010
23 November 2014 at 9:35 pm #136144Well that is a disgusting demonstration of sexual discrimination at its worst.
An open breach of one of the seven strands of discrimination. How on earth do these hypocrites get away with this!!!23 November 2014 at 10:17 pm #136146yes that is correct the labour party said both safe seats at Makerfield and Wigan the candidates had to be women Lisa Nandy won Wigan and Yvonne Fovarque won Makerfield year 2010Fovarque: that’s a good old British sounding name.

One of the most common, modern British names is Patel.
Now, how do you like them apples?
23 November 2014 at 11:44 pm #136156This is clearly a case of positive discrimination rather than sexual discrimination.
However, in certain cases positive discrimination can redressed the imbalance caused by years, if not decades or centuries, of blatant discrimination based on sexual or ethnic orientation.
This is an example of one of those cases.

Or it could be a case of the leadership pandering to the feminist pressure groups around the country and doing what they ‘think’ will win them more votes.
This is an example of one of those cases

A feminist pressure group formed as a result of such discrimination perhaps?
24 November 2014 at 12:49 am #136161Positive discrimination-?????
Certainly a different way of looking at democracy. Sounds a little like East Germany prior to the Berlin wall coming down.
Great idea though. How about multiple votes for certain groups in elections.24 November 2014 at 12:56 am #136163It was Tony Bliar’s idea women only shortlists.
Now there was a conman…

I understand what you are saying Sammy and agree that woman’s struggle against inequality is a noble and justifiable cause but do two wrongs make a right?
Discrimination is discrimination – can it be positive?
I don’t know the answer but it makes me feel uneasy when people talk about positive discrimination. I suppose it’s ok when it’s not you on the receiving end.
24 November 2014 at 3:52 am #136180I too have issues with positive discrimination but understand why it is applied in certain organisations. The Metropolitan Police for example.
