WIGAN ATHLETIC FA CUP WINNERS 2013 nobody can take that away, disrepectful or not.

      #125713

We’re 11th in the Championship. Current Cup holders or not no one else gives a toss about “Little Wigan”.

Sky certainly don’t – we’ve been on live once this season – at Blackpool.

Contrast that with all the times the ex – 70’s/80’s 1st Division clubs that are on every week and they haven’t been in the top flight for years. However they are still “big clubs”.

We might have been up there for 8 seasons AND won the FA Cup but quickly forgotten by the media.

If we can get into the play off places though and go on a really long unbeaten run then things may improve media wise – but don’t hold your breath. B)

        I doubt they hate us.

And it’s certainly not because of Whelan – far from it. They love Mr Rent-A-Quote as he fills spare newspaper columns and empty slots on Sky Sports News.

I think they just find us insignificant and of less appeal that other, larger clubs.

Why should the BBC give a toss? 20000+ that went to Wembley disrespected you yesterday – I’d be more annoyed at their disrespect.

As will happen when Wigan Warriors start their defence of the cup.

It’s not disrespect, it’s Wiganers being too tight to spend an extra £10
Come on mutty. You throw these comments in then dont respond. Wigan rugby have taken 30k to Wembley before now yet have had 4k on for cup games. Sunderland lost 21k fans today. What makes us such a disgrace?
One glaring omission in your post is the amount of supporters Carlisle took and the reason you haven’t had a reply from the Mutster. 21000 – 7000 = 14000

This, in a one horse town is no better or worse than our paltry figure, which I have to say does bug me. How anyone can have a season ticket but not spend a tenner at the start of our defence is beyond me.

But that’s a minority sport played along the M62 that doesn’t get as much coverage as Big Brother – why on earth would anyone expect huge crowds?

Sunderland are not the current FA Cup holders, commencing the defence of their title on their own ground. When they last did defend the trophy at home, the crowd was 25,712.

That’s a pretty lame response lad, even for you.

I suggest you just don’t bother in future. You’re not doing anyone any favours.

To be fair to Sunderland, they are pretty much on their arse at the moment and almost certain to go down, I just can’t see them turning things around. It must be so frustrating being a Sunderland fan because as a club they are too big and too good for the Championship but simply not good enough to compete with the majority of the established Prem clubs ! They will always get large crowds because up there you support 1 of 3 clubs. Can you imagine them competing in our catchment area ! They would be on a par with Blackburn I reckon, Blackburn shading it on the ‘History’ front of course ! You can’t really blame ‘Mutty’ for following our rugby team either because the poor lad has to have something to cheer about !

              #125763

There isn’t even that amount of competition Phil.

Hardly anyone north of Durham has any interest in Boro – so it’s a case of north of the river you support Newcastle, south of the river you support Sunderland.

Not at all. Its just that Sunderland are not the current FA Cup holders, commencing their defence. I’ve already given you the stats as to the attendance on the last occasion they did – it was over 25,000.

Face facts – only 5000 folk actually care that you are the FA Cup Holders. The 20,000 that accompanied those 5,000 to Wembley seem to have forgotten, the BBC have forgotten, ITV have almost forgotten. Sky never cared in the first place. Have I missed anyone out? If I have, they’ve probably forgotten too.

Your attempts to try and deflect these harsh but true facts by comparing them with Rugby League and a football club 150 miles away are commendable, but they are irrelevant. Wigan are the current cup holders and Wigan have set a post-war record low attendance for the FA Cup holders defending their title.

              Congratulations?

They may have all forgotten but I see you haven’t. Does it still hurt?

Cup holders or not, we’re still Wigan Athletic – with the same number if supporters that we had before, and many of them who won’t spend an extra £10 to watch a football match.

Winning a cup won’t spawn a new stadium full of supporters. Did you expect it to?

I’m quite proud that we have managed to set this new record. It just reiterates the fact that we had to win the cup in the first place to set the record.

Will this record ever be broken? Probably not, and it’s unlikely to be broken by Sunderland and most definitely not by Wigan RLFC.

You say “not at all” then don’t comment on it. Fair enough if you don’t want to comment on your own teams shortcomings.
The only things to be considered here are 14000 home fans in what is pretty much a derby for Sunderland, who average whatever they average and will more than likely sell out tonight for a semi final. Coming from a one horse town with no competition for support and a catchment area of at a guess 300,000 people.

                v

Wigan, little rugby town, who once won an FA Cup. (Which has hurt you like a kick in the scrotum). What winning the FA Cup in 2013 has got to do with anything when comparing 3rd round gates in 2014 is beyond me.

Why are you even bothering us?

                #125768

One thing that has probably not crossed Mutley’s bitter brain is the reason we set the lowest post war attendance record for a team defending the cup may well have something to do with the fact that Wigan are the smallest town club to win the FA cup since the war. Small club, small town, small fan base it’s not rocket science!
