The media seem to think that Terry and Lescott have been given orders to wind Balotelli up at every given chance so that he may lose the plot and get sent off ! We know that this goes on in the domestic game but do you agree with it ? Is it not sort of bringing the game into disrepute trying to get someone sent off ? Like diving, writhing round in agony after challenges and showing imaginary cards to the ref ! It may be put down to tactics but why cant teams just settle for competing against each other on a level playing field with 11 men each ? I would say that winding up a known hothead is bringing the game into disrepute because the sole purpose is to gain an advantage through a player being sent off.

21 June 2012 at 2:07 pm #89490I present as evidence for the defence the cases of:
Simon Haworth sent off playing for Tranmere v Wigan 17 Sep 2002
Darren Sheridan sent off playing for Oldham v Wigan 14 December 2002, and
Lee Cattermole sent off playing for Sunderland v Wigan 11 Sep 2010.Some teams do seem to use the tactic ;)

Lee Cattermole got himself sent off with 2 bad challenges and don’t recall him being wound up by anyone !
21 June 2012 at 3:07 pm #89494Seeing as the Italian defenders will be trying every trick in the book to wind Rooney up at the other end of the pitch , my request to Terry and Lescott would be – go for it boys.
And it’s not “what the media seems to think” , it’s what the media knows – because it happens in most football , rugby and even cricket matches.
21 June 2012 at 4:44 pm #89498As long as the winding up does not infringe the laws of the game then I see no problem with either side in a game doing it – its part & parcel of competitive sport.
I’d actually say that from having watched them in the past it seems the best way to wind up the likes of Rooney & Balotelli is for the opposition to have the better game & for those particular players not to be given a sniff of a chance or be marked out of the game – that’s when the lash out in frustrtaion & get themselves sent off. preceisely because as star players they are used to things going their way

Read virtually any football autobiography and there re tales of deliberately targeting or winding certain players up.
We used to do when I played for the Brazil youth team (AKA Comet of Poolstock) in the 80s, and my dad recounts tales of doing similar to a known hothead back in his amateur football days in the 60s.

The crowd wound up/upset Ellington in the first game in the Premiership that he played against us, so much that he was subbed early on.
Although he was a legend with us, he had made a choice and became fair game. And it worked.
