A few quick questions for you as I’m sure you all have strong views on the subject.

      1. Do you want us to stay up?

      2. Why?

      3. Would you think it would be a disaster if what you didn’t want to happen happened?

      4. If we stay up, where do you see the club in 5 years time?

      5. If we go down, where do you see the club in 5 years time?

Not expecting essays just some quick thoughts on one of the most pressing matters concerning our club at the moment.

      1 yes
2 I want the best for the club
3 If my girlfriend got preggy then it wont be a disaster be nice to take junior to the Latics
4 making a cup final and still last on MOTD
5 back in prem and still last on MOTD

      Hope that helps.

Very much so. My little boy is two yrs old next month. Id like us to be in top flight for couple more years to witness his club against the country’s elite. He’ll be coming with me regardless, but watching his local team fight it out with the big boys is something I’m looking forward to him being part of.

If we go down I think mr whelan has set us a steady ship to sail upon and I think we will be ok. If we stay up, think Martinez will have a good couple of years at the helm.

          1. Yes, but it’s not the unthinkable if we go down

          2. Because now me and all me mates are married with kids, European qualification will be the only excuse I have for a boozy trip to the continent with the lads!

          3. No. Just very sad given the incredible journey we’ve had getting here and the manner in which we let the opportunity slip from our fingers (over all 6 seasons mind, not just the last 2)

          4. Loire Drive, Wigan ;)

Seriously, scrapping for survival at the foot of the Premiership, dreaming of an Arab owner, with maybe 1 season flirting with Euro qualification

          5. Skelmersdale ;)

Seriously again, scrapping for survival at the foot of the Championship. It’s a slippery slope…

            1. Yes.

            2. Apart from being a Wiganer and wanting the best for my home town from every eventuality, I got 5-2 on you staying up prior to the Blackpool game!

            3. Losing £50 wont be a disaster, nor will losing premiership status. Its not like someone has died.

            4. Probably not in the PL. The chances of Wigan ever becoming an established premier league club look slimmer every year as more and more people fall out of love with the game. Uncle Dave will not be bankrolling the club in 5 years.

            5. Either lower end of CCC or League 1. The foreign merceneries will have long-since departed and the lack of current local Youths will mean the side will be filled with journeymen and kids who have just broken into the side after the club is forced to sign local kids.

Can’t see why any Latics fan would want us to get relegated, whatever division we’re in.

Shouldn’t be a disaster if we got relegated but it would be a shame to see what could be a promising young team get broken up.

I’d like to see us win the Carling Cup or the FA Cup. That would be the best way of developing the club.

              Yes

              2. Why?

Because I want the best for the club and I think we have grown recently and Bob’s “next level” talk might just be coming true. And I like to think we are winding up the establishment3. Would you think it would be a disaster if what you didn’t want to happen happened?

              No

              4. If we stay up, where do you see the club in 5 years time?

Playing better football, hopefully with a couple of European tours throw in. Bringing in the best young talent around

              5. If we go down, where do you see the club in 5 years time?

It all depends on the first year and if we really want to get back into the Prem. I think we would be a promotion contender for five years even if we don’t actually get up

                1. Yes
                2. Less empty seats, less for glory hunters to say about us and basically to continue fighting the odds.
                3. A bit of a disaster …. i’d certainly keep up my support though.
                4. 20,000 attendance’s, Premier League, new owners and a few good cup runs!
                5. Premier League, regional relegation battles and no high profile players eg. N’Zogbia and Hugo that to others ‘carry the team’.

                2. Why? So I have an incentive to stay up and watch Match Of The Day to the end.

                3. Would you think it would be a disaster if what you didn’t want to happen happened? No

                4. If we stay up, where do you see the club in 5 years time? Narrowly avoiding relegation.

                  what a stupid thread!

Why would anyone want us to go down??
Any fan that would rather have his club relegated needs shooting for crimes against football – end of!

Some do mate, trust me, Dave from Skem aka Vat 69 an example.
What is the point of bothering then as when your team gets to the toppermost of the poppermost( copyright J Lennon) if they can’t have the moon on the end of a stick they cry like babies or throw the towel in. i might grumble like i did after going to Sunderland but i’m a realist. i would rather see the Latics at home to Aston villa then Aldershot ;)

I can see where you’re coming from, and it may seen stupid but I really wouldn’t mind if we went down. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great seeing us in the Premier League but I wouldn’t be heart broken about relegation and here’s why…

                    1. Fighting relegation every season gets very repetitive especially when we just stay up to do the same the season after. I know Martinez talks about the ‘next level’ but we’ve seen in the past that whenever we do get a good team, the big boys come and take our prized assets and we’re back to square one. We also find it hard to hold onto our star men because the only reason they came was because the club was sold as a ‘stepping stone’ when they signed.

                    2. The Premier League angers me due to the top 3/4’s domination. They own this league, they can dictate decisions, bully smaller clubs and get away with all kinds of stuff simply because they’re ‘big’. This takes the mick and I don’t see the attraction of the ‘making up numbers’ role that everyone outside the top 6 has to play. The typical ‘glory hunting’ fan of such teams do my head in and they like to think they have a moral high ground simply because they win, even though that’s the only reason they support the club, because they win. If I wanted to win every game, I’d support a team that does so. Put simply, the fans annoy me.

                    3. The Championship is a damn entertaining league, more than the Prem in my view. Different top 6 every season; now ‘big’ clubs to bully the other teams/refs; different grounds to visit; anyone can beat anyone and it could be quite nostalgic actually.

                    4. If we do go down, there’s a greater chance that younger players will be given a chance (ie Callum McManaman) as their standard will be closer to Champ than Prem. There’s nothing better than seeing a local lad playing for the first team in my view, as long as he isn’t totally sh1te. Also, a promotion may mean a greater push the year after in the Prem due to keeping our high team spirit/morale (much like 05/06) which could allow us to move to the ‘next level’. Sometimes you have to go back to go forwards ;)

                    Just my views of course.

Excuses? No, I think we will stay up deep down. I just dislike the Premier League and tend to quite enjoy the Championship that’s all.

It is amazing how many people don’t like the Premier League now that we aren’t very good at competing in it.
