We are probably the smallest club to ever compete in the Premier League (13000 home fans for a game against Manchester United, 11000 season ticket holders paying 250quid???) and when we got here , 99% of us thought we would do what loads of others have done and stick around for a year before going down.

Our aim has always been and as far as I can see always will be staying up. The anti Whelan brigade saying he should go are living in a dream world because without him, or someone else like him anyway, putting money in every year we would be in a similar position to Leeds or Southampton…but with an average gate of about 8000.

We can’t build something long term in the Premier League because we can’t afford to. We can’t offer the likes of Palacios and Valencia and Cattermole what they can get elsewhere, and to be honest if by doing so it puts the future of the club at risk then I’d rather we didn’t.

Its ok saying we have all this money to spend…I’m afraid we don’t. The sales of the players over the past 6 months should have made serious in roads into the 60 million debt we have but then we have to keep reinvesting in the squad so its catch 22. Forget the Sky money in terms of a profit because its goes straight against the 38 million wage bill we are carrying.

Simple question is; how long can a club go on losing money every year??

To me it looks like the board, or Whelan alone, has sat down and looked at things and thought we have to change the way we are operating because long term it’s not sustainable and to my mind that’s the reason Steve Bruce left. We now have a young manager who appears to want to be here long term, hopefully Whelan will stick with him so let’s give him time to build something.

Sorry but I have to disagree. Most of the large football clubs owe money to the banks. Hopefully the young manager you refer too will improve the way the team are playing or we will be relegated and then we will see who the real fans are. I will give the manager until Christmas to improve things or else he will be on his way. It is time that the club did something serious to improve the crowds – £20 season tickets for all unde 16 year olds would be a start and keep this going for the next ten years or so, and this will help to increase the fan base because they will bring their parents along, and lets be honest it is better to have a full stadium rather than one which is half empty. Supporting football is an expensive business when you have two or three childrens season tickets to buy. Come on Wigan get the commercial department to come up with some good packages.[/quote]

Everyone goes on about us having the ‘best deal’ in the Premiership for fans. But I disagree.
Blackburn are actually doing a ‘3 match package’ for £30. It’s 3 tickets for 3 consecutive home games. That’s a really good offer. A tenner a match? They’ve also done a half-season ticket up until Christmas for £150. Yes, I know if you got the second part as well, it would work out more expensive than us, but the offer is there.

Regarding Martinez, I really don’t think Whelan will sack him, even if we are rock bottom. The reason? I don’t think anybody would take the job on without a guaranteed transfer budget, something we apparently don’t have. I think Whelan realises that nobody else would do it.

Best thing about season tickets is that under-5’s are free. However I think that 5-11 year olds should only be about £20, and 11-16 could be £40. I think that’s sensible that. The South Stand has declined badly. Although I did make a point last home game that we tend to have a few school parties in that end, and it’s been the summer holidays. Perhaps now the schools are back, it will improve? I definitely think that one game soon, they should designate as ‘School’s Day’, and have loads of them filling up the South Stand. Get a big net of fly away footballs knocked up (probably in a sweat shop in Mumbai) with the club badge on and signatures of the players printed on, and get them kicked into the crowd in the warm up.

Get those kids online, and they’ll come back. It always ends up being a rubbish game when we have loads of day trippers like that. So let’s give them something to take away from the game, and hopefully they’ll come back.

Its almost funny to see this. A club in its 5th premiership season, playing in the richest league in the world and our fans are talking of being in dire straits. Fans of clubs like Luton, Bournmouth, Bury etc etc must look on here and think to themselves, ‘you undeserving people’
A Wigan fan I know, but i show no malice to any other supporters who hate Wigan fans, you cant blame them. :x :x :x :x :x

“Everyone goes on about us having the ‘best deal’ in the Premiership for fans. But I disagree”….do me a favour, yes Blackburn’s this season are cheaper than us, but we’ve had ST’s available at £13-£15 a game for 3 seasons now. You’re right about the prices for older kids, they should be cheaper, but no adult can have any complaint about being able to pay £13ish a game…..and before anyone says “but what about £30 for Utd etc, we actually play 19 home games a season not 4.

Got to agree with that post. Adult prices are really good value, but kids aren’t. What is the difference between a ten year old (my lad last season) and an eleven year old (my lad this season)? He can’t earn money and no-one gives me any more money for him, so why do the club believe a ten year old’s season ticket is worth £76, but an eleven year old’s should be £140 – £160?

Thats a big increase, but its still only about £8 a game, which isn’t bad. Where the club lets the kids down is the matchday prices which I believe are quite expensive (although I may be wrong).

Of course it is and I’m lucky enough that I can afford it, dare I say, easily. I’m certainly not going to knock the club on ticket prices.

However, not everyone can afford it and if mum and dad aren’t football fans, a 14 year old isn’t going to be able to raise that sort of money to go by themsleves. I was also lucky my dad was a Latics fan, but remember my first season ticket was part of my Birthday, or Christmas present (a long time ago).

Chill out, man. I was giving an opinion.

Whatever, it’s not working, is it? Stadiums like a morgue.

It must be difficult to get the right cut off points and prices though.
If you were to say for instance all under 16’s season tickets are £100, which would be a very very fair price, would we then get the people with 6 year olds saying its a massive jump from ‘free’ the previous year.
