Dont see the problem myself.
Martinez has shown he wont risk league position for the sake of a cup run and I doubt the Europa will be seen in any different light.
It provides fantastic opportunities for players to make a step up in the manner Mcmanaman has this season.
I think there will be a lot of movement in the summer if we stay up or not as I dont hold much hope for the likes of Alcaraz and Figroll signing new contracts but is another attraction to our small club not only for potential first team signings but also young players like Dicko willing to move country for the opportunity.
I can see Martinez now standing outside the Nou Camp as they cut the youth players they dont think are up to scratch.
Step on up, European football with Wigan! Free pie with every signature!
24 April 2013 at 5:46 pm #110782thought i’d seen griff moonlighting in prince of wales on the sly…….could be wrong though…..Brilliant, because those two have never been used on me before today.
25 April 2013 at 1:45 am #110813I understand what you’re saying Doug and I assume you’d be a lot happier had we qualified for Europe via our league position as that would suggest he had the resources, size of squad and quality of player to enable us to take Europe seriously, right?
But it’s also a BIT like saying a team shouldn’t get promoted cos they finished in the lowest play of place or they finished 2nd but 10 points behind the champions.
I don’t think we should be looking this gift horse in the mouth as even if we are relegated, Europe gives us something else to look forward to and extra income to support our parachute payments and healthy financial footing, and should therefore attract players who can take us straight back up.
From a pure fan perspective, having got into the Prem and stayed up, the next and I’d say final achievement for me was to see us play a competitive game in Europe. I could have probsbly stopped supporting us after that ;)
But I always assumed that qualification would be via league position as never in my wildest dreams did I think we’d reach a major cup final and especially not the FA Cup. So qualifying for Europe via a major cup final is a double boost and still gives me the dream of league position qualification to look forward to.25 April 2013 at 3:00 am #110835Just so, galacTIC. Pundits used to say that the teams best placed to win the cup were those in midfield free from the pressures of fighting for a top four/five place or against relegation.
Well, City do fit into that category – they are confident of a top four place but are no longer competing for the title. Wigan don’t – they are deep in trouble in the relegation battle. It would be tragic – and a giant step backward – if Wigan gained cup success at the expense of relegation.
We battle on. But my priority – and the stated priority of both Whelan and Martinez – is to stay in the Premier League. I would have preferred to consolidate our place before enjoying a cup run. European football comes behind both.
Martinez played reasonably strong teams against Millwall, Manchester City and West Ham. That produced cup success but no league points. Would I play a weakened team in the cup final? I suppose not. Would I play a weakened team at Arsenal if a victory over Villa would keep us up? I would certainly be tempted.
25 April 2013 at 3:12 am #110836Not sure the bank balance will stretch to them all, but I will certainly do the home games and at least 1 away (especially in the qualifying round – just in case)
25 April 2013 at 3:14 am #110837The same 3 points are on offer at Arsenal as they are for the villa game. Bobby would be bonkers to rest any players at this stage of the season. Stick with what we’ve been doing and if lady luck is on our side, we may just get enough points to stay up. B)
I still think Sunderland are not out the mire. A defeat at Villa and despite all the arm waving that Di Canio has done, they are still in the mix. :woohoo:
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!25 April 2013 at 4:28 am #110843I understand what you’re saying Doug and I assume you’d be a lot happier had we qualified for Europe via our league position as that would suggest he had the resources, size of squad and quality of player to enable us to take Europe seriously, right? But it’s also a BIT like saying a team shouldn’t get promoted cos they finished in the lowest play of place or they finished 2nd but 10 points behind the champions.

For each qualifier a club receives £100k, which, after the cost of flying the team there and back, plus hotel and ground transportation, doesn’t go very far.
For reaching the group stage, a club gets £1.3m, which, minus travel etc, would probably come out £750k – £1m at the most.
Even winning the group would only bring in an extra £1m.
So, realistically, £2m for winning the group stage – the equivalent of two players’ wages for the season.
Where we will benefit, as you’ve pointed out, is by appealing to a better quality of player because of out participation in Europe.

Bloomin ‘eck – that’s a bit paltry isn’t it? Better than nout tho I suppose. Can we get paid in Euros?
25 April 2013 at 2:26 pm #110856Does that include TV money or is that extra?

Martinez has some difficult choices to make.
I wouldn’t like to see Wigan going into a crucial game against Villa on Sunday after all eleven players had played in the Cup Final on Saturday and an important game at Arsenal on Tuesday.
Three vital games in a week is asking too much of the players. Arsenal will have enjoyed a week-end without a game – and they will probably still be chasing points for the Champions League. That will be a very difficult game – whatever the result of the Cup Final. And Villa won’t have a mid-week game.
As for Sunderland, a victory for Villa would put both teams on 37 points. I think I’d rather see Sunderland on 40 and Villa still on 34.
25 April 2013 at 3:06 pm #110859I would agree with that as well. I think it is now too late for hoping to get as many teams in the fight as possible. It is really is just between us and Villa. I’m a Sunderland fan on Monday that’s for sure.
