Fantastic place, Krakow. Been 5 times and I love it. I know an expat out there and I was offered the chance to move there. Was tempted, but I’ve got kids, responsibilities, and of course, Latics! So I didn’t.

Around 400 bars around the historic old town. Its a very compact place, easy to get around by foot. Airports about 20 mins out, taxis aplenty and a rail line straight into Krakow. Its easy.

Still be nice weather in October. Most things happen around the large market square. Little streets full of bars. Lots of pavement cafes to sit and have a nice cold Tyskie, Zwierzc, or other local beer. Local kebabs are really good too! And the women? Beautiful women all over.

I know your probably going for a piss up, but if you are at all interested in history, definitely do a trip to Auschwitz Birkenau, the former Nazi concentration camps. About an hour away, can book the trip all over town. The events shown in the film Schindlers List, occurred in Krakow. His factory is now a superb museum about the Nazi occupation and the local Jewish ghetto (nearby) and Holocaust. If even slightly interested, its highly reccomended.

Beer costs between about £1.20-1.90 on average. Vodka is so cheap too. More strip bars appearing of late, too. You might even be able to catch a game, as there are two clubs, Wisla and Cracovia. Wisla are the big club. Fans are a bit nuts though, you have to take care.

Google ‘Krakow In Your Pocket’ for up to date guide for tourists and pick up a hard copy at hotels. Also see the ‘Krakow Post’ Emglish newspaper.

Yep Krakow is a great place for a couple of nights away.

Cheap, cheerful and effing cold in winter. Very warm in summer though England stayed in hotel just off the main square last year.

Still reckon we’ll get Inverness

            Krakow is a beautiful city.

Only problem if we drew a team from there is that their fans are nutters.

I do like this “away end” from a lower division team, Znicz Pruszkow:

Wisla Krakow currently mid table, Cracovia Krakow currently in second tier.

If we draw Lech Poznan, Slask Wroclaw, or Gornik Zabrze, the current Europa league probables, I will probably stay in Krakow as my base. Have about 3 or 4 days. I have an apartment just off the market square I can stay in.

Incidentally, City beat Zabrze in the 1970 cup winners cup final.

Have heard the dates for the 3rd qualifying round are 1st August (first leg) and 8th August (2nd leg), with the draw taking place on the 19th July.

I’m assuming it’s pot luck whether you’re home or away for the first leg though, right?

Edit: just seen the post above this…so the play off is after the 3rd qualifying round? I.e. runners up of the FA Cup are given preference over the winners of the League Cup, even though we’ll finish lower than Swansea in the league?

TBH I’m a bit confused now – as Stoke went in at 3Q stage, so maybe Swansea will move up a notch if we are below them in the PL. Let’s just see what happens hey?[/quote]

                    From Wikipedia:

“Birmingham City qualified for the play-off round of the 2011–12 UEFA Europa League after winning the 2010–11 Football League Cup, worth a third qualification round spot, and subsequently being moved up a round due to the outcome of the 2011 FA Cup Final.”

So it appears that it’s not due to Premier League position but the status of your success. FA Cup winners trump League Cup winners, but League Cup winners trump FA Cup runners up.

So we better go and blooming win the FA Cup then!

                      Third Qualifying Round
                      Playoff Round
                      Group Stage

The FA Cup winner goes into the Group Stage.
Fifth place in the Premier League goes into the Playoff Round.
Swansea, as League Cup winners, are entitled to a place in the Third Qualifying Round.

If the FA Cup winner plays in the Champions League, the runner-up enters the Third Qualifying Round, and the other two teams move up a round.

                      Some results from the Third Qualifying Round in August 2012;
                      Omonia 0-0 Crvena zvezda
                      Dinamo Moskva 5-0 Dundee United
                      Elfsborg 2-3 Horsens
                      Aktobe 1-2 Genk
                      Slaven Koprivnica 2-1 Athletic
                      Legia 3-1 Ried

The Market Square, understandably, is very touristy. That’s not to say it’s tacky….I don’t think it is. When I mentioned strip bars, they have tended to be away from the main square. However I believe that a few have been cropping up in the streets nearer to the square. Its not seedy though, like Wenceslas Square in Prague at night. Krakow locals and authorities are trying to get away from the stag party image. They, understandably, got fed up of home counties numpties dressed as Fred Flintstone acting the dick. Local Police are quite visable. I believe that if theres trouble, they dont mess about.

I will have to have a think and get back to you, about specific ‘non touristy’ places. There are streets not that far from the square that are quieter, but theres a good vibe all over really. Definitely more relaxed and chilled. I had a mate who ran a bar there, but he closed it last year due to the building owner upping the rents extortionately. It’s a shame as it was a good place.

Theres pretty much something for everyone, with Szewska, one of the streets leading off the square, being deemed the ‘Party street’ due to the nightclubs that are on it. Florianska also leads off the square to the North, and has bars galore. Some are set down in cellars. Theres a great place (touristy, but good) called ‘The English Premier League’ bar. Its set down in cellars, has wall to wall sky tv, and tables with your own pump. I will have a look back and think where I went. Paperazzi, on Ul Kryza (I think) is a cocktail bar. Pod Papaguami (or summat like that) is an Irish bar. Theres places all over.

Look on the ‘Krakow In Your Pocket’ website, for up to date reviews amd get a copy of the mag when you get there. Its done by local ex pats and is spot on.

I always head down towards the old Jewish Kazimierz district, as there are loads of bars down there and off the beaten track. Found one called ‘Aloha’ (Hawaiian themed) last time and that was pretty cheap. (about £1.20 for a beer) Certainly, drink was cheaper the further away from the square you went, but still some alright prices right around the square. Foodwise, theres allsorts. Fast food places, themed places-I liked one with a wild west theme called ‘Sioux’, on the main square. Also, if you want to try the local food (and Polish food is pretty good actually) you could do worse than visit a ‘Chopskie Jadlo’ restaraunt. (The one in Ulica Jana is good) It’s traditional, Polish food. Very meat based, but also has stuff like Wiener Schnitzel as well. Between all of you, you could definitely order the banquet they do, which is cheap for what you get, I think. For a more romantic, classier meal, I would reccommend either Wentzl, Leonardo-a superb Italian, or Pod Aniolami. For quick eats, there are Maccies, Burger King, KFC, and local places. The local kebabs are about £1.50 and are superb. They also sell big slices of baguette pizza-its the local thing. Local Ice Cream stands are good as well, with a big variety. And do try the pretzls from the stands that are all around. Really good.

Accomodation wise, have a look at Krakow City Apartments, as it can be better and cheaper to stay in your own apartment. If you fancy a hotel, Hotel Senacki is superb. Classy, and situated on Ul Grodzka, its minutes off the square.

I hope to get over there myself, this year.
