I will actually be rooting for England against Italy ! B)As Standish said, very civil of you. The real question though is this, if things aren’t going well, will you stay to the end, or switch off the TV, log onto an internet forum and call for the English Clown to be sacked?

I’m currently sitting in an apartment in Poznan, Poland and through my window, two hundred yards away, I can see the military cemetery.
In that cemetery there is a British and Commonwealth section containing four hundred graves. In those graves are twenty or so lads from the north west of England, and two from Wigan (Ashton & Hindley) – from either World War, who were both prisoners of war executed by the Germans.
The cemetery also contains the graves of the participants from the real Great Escape, who were also systematically rounded up and killed by the ‘Fatherland’.
A few hundred yards up the road is a monument to the scores of Polish civilians also taken away and killed by the ‘Machine’.
The four Polish people I am working with cannot abide the Germans but admit that their attitude is much mellowed compared to that of their grandparents, but saying that, all four say they’d refuse to accept a German car even it was given to them.
And has it changed? Germany are currently under investigation by UEFA for displaying ‘inappropriate’ banners and neo-Nazi chanting during their game against Portugal.
So, in a nutshell, I have a handful of German friends, who are all very very nice people, and I’ve been to numerous German cities and found them to be lovely places, however, I could not bring myself round to supporting their country in any shape or form – despite the time that has elapsed. Living in the past and prejudice it may be, there are a hundred or more countries I would choose to support before Germany!
Maybe if it was Germany v Taliban in the World Cup final, I’d probably side with the Germans (probably), but other than that scenario, I really cannot understand how any native of Britain (or indeed any other country) can support Germany. I find it hard enough comprehending how anyone can support a football team from another town let alone another county.
How did you get round to supporting another country above your own?

Beautifully put Mr Standish – I feel that you have touched the sentiments of the majority here and around the country.
This, however…..”Living in the past and prejudice it may be” – is not to be mistaken as a weakness, for we should always remember those atrocities and tell our kids and their kids and so on, so that we never go back to those dark days and thank in our prayers those who lay in that cemetery for the freedom we now enjoy.
………….and then there’s the football.
I am with Micky here and as he says ” Then there is football ” Please don’t compare football support to World wars because this is not about that.( We would hate the USA if that were the case ! ) Like many have said before on here, when tragedy strikes football takes a back seat as things are put into perspective because football is just a game. Well this is about football and like it or not football is just an outlet for fun and enjoyment ( Not always the case for WAFC fans ! )and is not to be compared to war atrocities .You mention inappropriate banners being displayed by German fans, nothing to do with me man and I don’t condone it any more than you may well not condone the fact that England have a racist at the heart of their defence ! If you do want to compare war atrocities to football then don’t forget the poor Ethiopians on Sunday evening when the Italians take to the pitch !
PS With reference to my USA remark, don’t forget that Britain are their chief allies and if you really want to link football to war atrocities there is a whole can of worms that could be opened here !

Yes I will be rooting for The Father Land !I think the reason war atrocities and such came into the conversation might have something to do with using terms like above?!
Unless if course your father is German? Otherwise it is associated with Nazi Germany, and could sway people’s thought process into thinking you’re a raving Nazi, which I’m sure you’re not Phil, I do ‘get’ the football reasons, though I couldn’t bring myself to openly support them sausage eating, pils drinking, Jew murdering, Greece destroying, Kraut bastards.But we’ve all got our faults eh ;)

I will be rooting for them because I want a Germany v England semi.Should they fluff their lines I shall find it highly amusing !!
