People from Skelmersdale are confused, they dont know what they are. I know people from skemersdale who have gotten a hiding in Liverpool for not being local, yet they keep going back for more everything week, i feel sorry for them a bit
And yeah I know wigan has a shit accent before anyone has a go.

I’m not confused at all. I’m a Skemmer. Not one bit of Scouse blood in me. No longing for, or memories of Liverpool in my family home.
Wiganers may slag Skelmersdale off………….but enough of you bloody work there!
Skem is no better or no worse than anywhere else, believe me. Only problem with Skem is the council, and their waste of money on daft things, and leaving the important things……Hold on, wait a minute…….

Trouble with a lot of the plastic Scousers is, they go back to Liverpool and I think the locals think they are taking the mick. I know people in Skem who have stronger accents than people from West Derby or Croxteth! It’s funny. Especially when one of them has a mother from WHELLEY and his dad is a proper Old Skemmer.
My mate who I go out round Liverpool has a mother originally from Huyton, and a dad who is from down South originally. My mate sounds Scouse, but not put-on. We never go acting the gobshyte and have a good time. Liverpool is one of those places where if you want trouble…you’ll get easily find it.
26 January 2010 at 9:11 pm #19886I have to agree vat! Ive got a slight scouse twang from somewere but i have never had any trouble in Liverpool! Actually thats a lie i had a arguement in a chippy in Bootle with some kids that thought they were in a gang and were taking the piss out of a friend who was a bit worse for wear!
Liverpool is a belting night and dare i say a lot safer than a night out in Wigan!

Notice you use Orrell and Standish, two of the more desirable areas of Wigan.
What about this then? In my stomping ground.

If that house was in standish where i live it would be worth about £300,000

Name any part of wigan that is worse than Digmore.27 January 2010 at 1:47 am #19925Ah come on Sniper, there are some pretty poor areas of Wigan as well. I’ll not name them as there will be people who frequent this site who are from there.
Old Skem isn’t Scouse, it’s basically an extension of Up Holland, and genuine Old Skemmers are as broad Lancashire as you’ll find. I should know, I married one.
27 January 2010 at 12:43 pm #19955Thank you.

I know there are some rough areas of wigan, what i’m saying is that dave is talking out of his balloon knot when he says skem is no worse than anywhere else.
I know skem very well and have a lot of ties there.
I would say that old skem is more an extension of ormskirk than upholland to be honest.
Between upholland and old skem they built all the rough estates such as tanhouse and digmoor (which are far worse than even the roughest parts of wigan)
If you frequent the pubs of standish Mr Walker i probably know you.27 January 2010 at 8:14 pm #20009The Globe usually. If you see happen to see a devilishly good looking bloke at the bar, then that’s probably not me, or any of my mates.
27 January 2010 at 8:33 pm #20011I would say that old skem is more an extension of ormskirk than upholland to be honest. Then you’d be wrong. Historically, the links between Skem and Ormskirk are pretty well non-existent, hence the dislike by Skemmers of the Ormskirk-based council. Similarly, Up Holland and Skem were two separate identities until the powers that be decided that Skelmersdale New Town sounded like a good idea for Liverpool’s overspill and Up Holland ended up as an overspill for Skem, much to the disgust of the residents there.

Fair Enough
I meant more geographicaly than historically TBH.The Globe usually. If you see happen to see a devilishly good looking bloke at the bar, then that’s probably not me, or any of my mates.I go in the Globe quite often myself and deffo every sunday afternoon.
Do you go on Gavs coaches?28 January 2010 at 3:00 pm #20171I would say that old skem is more an extension of ormskirk than upholland to be honest.

Skem and Ormskirk traditionally, don’t get on. I remember when I was in my teens, quite often there would be a gang going to Ormskirk, or they’d be coming down to Skem.
Ormskirk has always been considered to be ‘Conservative’, and the people there more ‘snobby’ than Skem, which is ‘Labour’.
However, it’s not as bad as it used to be, and a lot of people go out round Ormskirk. We did as well. Used to be a bar called the ‘Loose Moose’ which was the main haunt at one time. Best night ever had in Ormskirk was when my mates were at Edge Hill Uni. They had disco nights with ‘Stu Allen’ and it was wall to wall pussy, with student birds from all over the country. Major pulling opportunities. My mate married one of em! Still a decent night, Ormskirk, but only because it’s a student town. Or it would be dead.Honestly, Skem isn’t that bad. It’s not great, but it’s not terrible. It get’s tarred as being ‘Scouse’* when it really isn’t. Don’t suppose it helps that the New Town is nearer to Wigan than Old Skem. Most people in Old Skem are decent sorts. You get dic*heads and druggies everywhere. Worst areas are probably parts of Birch Green and Tanhouse. Heversham and Egerton estates. But I’ve hardly been round that end. Quiet, nice end, Old Skem. It’s own dialect and everything. Loads of pubs, but I don’t think any are great. but that’s more to do with my age. 33 and I feel old in them.
*I have plenty Scouse friends from all over Skem. They are all really nice people, as are most Liverpudlians FROM Liverpool who I have met. Salt of the earth, most people. When I worked at the Employment Services in Skem, the problem clients were usually people who had moved to Skem from far away places, like down south, etc, rather than locals.
