Far from talking Latics down, I am merely being realistic.

Wigan Athletic play in a northern, working class rugby town, in a half-filled stadium and are likely to get relegated every year: let’s be honest, that’s what most people think.

Ambitious Premier League footballers do not come to Wigan. We attract young lads from lower leagues, players from other country’s leagues who want to make the step up, and older players in the twilight of their career.

As much as I’d love to think the Martinez/Whelan road-show of recent weeks has done wonders for Wigan’s image, the club will still fall well short of attracting the bigger names.

I appreciate that the promised money from Whelan could be used to blow on one player’s salary, but that money is not unlimited, and there is a wage structure in place at the club for a reason; pay one player £40k a week, and suddenly the whole squad want a pay rise – and the club simply cannot afford that.

I agree that Di Santo’s goal to game ratio could be better, but I’m not overly concerned about it as long as he’s working for the team and the team are scoring. But yes, another striker would be good and if Boselli is up for it, he’ll do for me.

For me, we need another Centre Half as Gohouri has gone and I’m not too confident of Lopez; we also need cover on the right, if as I’ve heard, Stam is looking to leave.

Whilst I agree that J A Risse would make a fantastic addition to the squad, unfortunately it’s Bjorn Helge Risse who has been released from Fulham, not his brother.

what do we lose if Boselli replaces him, especially in a system more suited to his particular merits?

I’m intrigued as to why people think Boselli is more suited to Latics 3-2-2-2-1 system (it isn’t 3 up front!! ;) )
From what I know & have been told about Boselli he is a penalty area striker whose contribution to the team outside of his ability to take chances (regardless of a few of the sitters he missed for Latics) is minimal.
If that’s the case then why is he going to be more suited to a system that requires him to drop deep, pull out wide etc.. in pretty much the same way that the lone striker role has always been played under Martinez? (even if you feel Bobby plays with 3 up front the other 2 are not conventional strikers)
I’m not saying that he would or wouldn’t be a success if he came back just that I don’t see the role that he would be asked to play in has changed much in the time that he’s been away so why are many now saying he would be more suited to this sytem other than that the new formation is more successful & has led to more goals throughout the team? Something which in my opinion has come because the players playing in it are more suited to those roles

Understand from a v good source that our current player of the year tops (by some) the £40k figure toy refer to. Furthermore, that he fancied his chances of a move to Liverpool had RM gone.

Happy with Di S (no issue) – improved goals to game ratio anticipated
Bosselli – not for me (quality addition required…)
Agreed on CB / RWB comments
J A Risse – stand corrected. BH, as good as his brother ??

Shame. J A Risse and Pavel P combination would have worked nicely alongside Beausejour and Di Santo.

Quality in depth for our good Cup runs next season and assault on Europe (qualification via Fair Play ?! … ;)

In my opinion, there are two reasons:

    1. Because the two wide players in this system are wingbacks who have the primary task whilst in attack of getting the ball into the box.

In the old system the two wide players were additional forwards who were played on the ‘wrong wings’ to encourage them to cut inside, get shots on goal, and support the central striker. This often didn’t happen and the central striker was left isolated – hence why it didn’t suit Boselli.

    2. Boselli needs central players to link up with in an around the box; call them additional strikers, deep lying forwards or advanced midfielders, he now has two of them.

Maybe Caldwell is paid that. It was a figure I plucked out of the air to be honest.

The point I was trying to make was there is a wage structure in place at the club and it will start winding players up if new squad members are signed on higher contracts.

Riise’s brother is a midfielder if I recall, but other than that I don’t know a great deal about him and I don’t know a great deal about the Pavel boy other than seeing him score a few goals and gangling about Flo.

And….I think we’ve more chance of qualifying for the Champions League than getting into Europe through fairplay with our record of red cards. ;)

Good points them & i hadn’t thought of it like that
IMO though the role still needs a striker who will run themselves into the ground putting pressure on the defence when in possession & someone who will drop deep, pull out wide & all that. That’s a massive part of their role (& a far bigger part of it than getting on the end of crosses) & one to which both Di Santo & Sammon are suited (although for the latter i feel its at a lower level) & one to which Boselli isn’t

STANDISH & TYLDESLEY IN AGREEMENT SHOCKER!!

‘That’s a massive part of their role (& a far bigger part of it than getting on the end of crosses)’

Exactly. Goals to game ratios do not matter for individual players; it’s the goals to game ratio of the team that’s important.

I think Boselli would a useful player to interchange with Di Santo and offer something different – possibly after Di Santo has run them into the ground.

Heres a ridiculous thought (ridiculous because it will never happen) why dont some of these now very very rich players give their services to lower division clubs for lower wages.
Rather than finish playing prematurely surely they should give back something to the game that has rewarded them beyond what they could have ever imagined.
Whether it be here or back in their own countries it doesnt matter but what a great way of finishing off their careers.
Give me hungry young players like James Mcarthur or James Mcarthy who graft their socks off than anyone on this list (Owen excluded-still a bit left i think)

Why, would you, if you were ever lucky or talented enough to ever be in that position?
