Guess which one has the better goals per game ratio in the championship?

And Clarke’s got more than me in the Championship ffs pal do a better comparison hey !.

I take it you didn’t go much last season or you were wearing your Elton John rose tinters every week. He was one lazy get up till the last 4 or 5 games as they do when contract time draws closer and the penny drops.
This signing wouldn’t be moving forward, it’s a step backwards.
Its time Cook and the IEC need to push on not back[/quote]

Why do people interpret posts wrongly? Please copy and paste the part of my post where I said I would like us to sign Clarke? Its you who you needs to change your specs buddy. I wouldn’t touch Clarke with a barge pole, I was merely stating a fact.

So to sum up. Folk read Alan Nixon’s Twitter account and take every word he says as gospel. Despite his dreadful track record. Well, unless the player is literally at the training ground concluding a deal. Before he jumps in with a ‘Breaking News’ scoop.

Then we have another set of fans. Those who pluck names out of thin air, give us chapter and verse on their careers. And bemoan the club when we don’t sign ‘em.

These past two seasons we’ve built squads to get us promoted from League One and to maintain our Championship status. It’s increasingly tedious reading social media and other sites how this window is “typical Latics”. Writing off our business a month before the window closes. Same goes for the ‘Gallagher to Clarke’ type comments. As if it’s a £5m deal or a free. The more obvious conclusion is we’re in the market for a couple of strikers.

Once again, we are doing it all on the cheap, looking for freebies and being reluctant to spend. Quite predictable.

Who is this down to? Cook? Or the owners/Darren Royle?

If its Cook, he is a fool. I have heard a few tales of people not renewing, due to the fact that Cook is going to rely on the young kids we have got. His comments over the last few days suggest this is true. I’ve renewed our tickets, but I am not looking forward to the season as we currently stand, as I can see us getting smacked a few times. Theres no depth to the squad, and its quite telling that a keeper has been our priority.

We are nowhere near good enough. We have Chris Brass as our recruitment guy, but if Leon Clarke is the best we can come up with after weeks of rumours of this player and that player, then its a sorry situation. Its time we bloody thought a bit bigger and all that “theres funds available…the Grigg money, etc”, I dont believe a word of it.

We will come unstuck unless we strengthen considerably.

            #179551

Not spending is probably down to the fact we have very little money realistically.

Those not renewing cos he wants to play the kids are probably the same ones who waxed on all last season about us playing the kids.

What are your genuine expectations of us at this level? Bottom half for me staying up slightly easier than last campaign but with the odd wobble.

I think we could be in for a difficult season. Two of the relegation places were sewn up pretty much all season last season, its not going to be like that this season, I don’t think.

I’m not saying we should expect to be around the play offs, but thats where we should be aiming for. No…wait! If you do that, but realistically know you will be happy to finish between 10th and 16th, it is achievable.

It worries me that whilst Joffy (Gelherdt) and the others may shine in glimpses, they could also get their arses served to them by teams like Leeds, West Brom, even Luton, a good team who will be well drilled. I think Cook is taking a huge gamble if going with the youth is his plan. Obviously, we’ve all heard what a prospect Joffy is, and Lang is at the point where he needs to break through. But lets be a bit patient and sparingly with them!
As we stand, we need a left back…is Robinson coming, or not? It looks like we are bringing McLeod in from Brentford in midfield. We need to bring in a striker, a livewire from league one or somewhere…pay some money! Clarke is not the option. If he had been, we wouldve brought him in weeks ago. To sign him now is just to make our numbers look better. Yes, we need a striker, but lets be a bit more ambitious eh?

I’d leave Jamal Lowe alone as well, I’ve never been over keen. Loan wise, and I know wages would be an issue, I’d test the water for Shane Long from Southampton. I’m sure he would bang a few in for us, he is a handful, and I think his game time will be very limited there this season.

I struggle to put into words how little respect I have for anyone who walks away from this club because we plan to give some of our youngsters an opportunity. Let alone a month before the season starts with so many deals still in the offing. I don’t know anyone who would even entertain such an idea.

There are only a handful of clubs doing plenty of business. Most are in similar positions to us. Lost a few key players, waiting for the market to kick into gear. We certainly need a left-back and striker. But beyond that I’d sooner trust a handful of youngsters who are ready to step up. We’ve done well this summer to move on squad fillers. No need to panic and buy for the sake of it.

Mark my words, this will be amongst one of the poorest signings we’ll make all season. This guy is mega plagued with hamstring issue’s that won’t go away. This isn’t a one off issue it’s been with him most of his footballing career.
His lack of gametime over the past 3 years is because of this problem and a serious knee injury. He actually missed the whole 2015-2016 because of hamstring problems and it’s never left him to this day.
We’ve just let go of a player (Powell) who needed constant mothering to the point that, if he hit grass the number board went up. why the hell when your short of players take on a player that suffers so bad with hamstrings. min 4-6 weeks out when that goes.

To punch above our weight we need to target players who, for one reason or another, have a mark against them. Powell’s injuries and off field issues are why he was playing for us. If we’d been smarter we could have cashed in to the tune of £5m-£10m. So it was a risk worth taking.

You’d say that if we signed Messi or Ronaldo.

As SH77 says, we have to sign players that are a risk. He comes in on a free and does a job, result. He comes in on a free and does nothing then it was a risk we needed to take. Same with Darron Gibson last season. Few good games, few poor, some injuries so we let him go but a risk we had to take.

And I will get banned off here if anybody makes an abusive comment about my 10 year old son, like happened on Vital. My response was warranted. Yeah it happened, bit I guess its one rule for one….

                          Now get ovet it. Cheers.

Perhaps that’s why he’s only been given a 12 month contract even though he’s only 25. Good gamble in my opinion and one that unfortunately we will have to take in our position.
If it pays off and we get 30 odd games out of him it will be a superb signing. If he is picking up injuries throughout the season and hardly contributes we don’t renew his contract.

So you think taking a risk on a player who’s had 3 serious knee injuries and more pulls than pornhub is a worthy gamble ?, 30 games ??

I will be honest and say I don’t know much about this lad. I have heard of him, but thats it.
But thats onviously because he has been so unfortunate with injuries.
Hope he stays fit and reignites his career with us.
