So what’s going on with this guy ?, is he still playing or what ?
6 January 2015 at 11:48 am #137866Think he’s not fully fit but I know for a fact that he helps to coach some of the kids, maybe 16-18 year olds, on a Thursday night because he’s on the pitch next to us when he does it.
Not sure that’s part of what he gets paid for but, as calamitous a footballer as he has been for us at times, there’s no denying that he is a positive influence around the club.
Did I ever mention that he insisted on signing copies of my book when he realised they were being raffled off for Jospeh’s Goal? ;)
6 January 2015 at 11:57 am #137867A book written by you and signed by Gary Caldwell. They must fly off the shelves.

6 January 2015 at 6:37 pm #137910Not a bad earner that, training the kids while still drawing a hefty wedgeWhy is it an earner?
He’s either fulfilling part of the coaching role that come with his player/coach contract, or he’s doing it free of charge off his own back.

Key word “part” I would say he’s a player over coach so my question was , is he playing or what ?Caldwell signed a one year contract with Wigan in July 2014. As part of the new agreement he was also given some coaching responsibilities.
July 2015 get rid time,

To be honest, I’d be surprised if you knew the finer details of the precise arrangement between the club and Caldwell. After all, you seem to know nothing about anything else.

He went in too heavy with the pen and ripped the cover and then, not for the first time in his career, gave the pen away! :)

…and how do you come to that conclusion?
There is no need to know “the finer details of the precise arrangement between the club and Caldwell” as the club, in their statement stated:
“Wigan Athletic are delighted to confirm that club captain Gary Caldwell has signed a new one year deal to remain at the DW Stadium, which will see him combine playing duties with a coaching role at the Academy”.
so – “is he still playing or what ?”
Hardly a bloody difficult question to address – and I’m sure that some would have been more interested in the answer rather than self promotion,
Further, I agree that if he is only fulfilling part of his contract (for whatever reason) and still being paid his full salary, then it is indeed “a nice little earner” for him.
Petty, just bloody petty.
7 January 2015 at 11:44 am #137949He’s a member of the playing squad but is injured.
I’m sure that was covered earlier.

[/quote]Oh dear, don’t tell me you’ve reverted to idiot mode over Christmas, too! And you were doing so well lately! ;)
The ‘if’ in you post is key. Nobody here knows whether his contract has been revised to include coaching duties or not. If it hasn’t, then he is actually performing extra duties for no extra pay. The fact that he is injured, out of form, or out of favour does not constitute only fulfilling part of his contract. He is a member of the first team squad, whether he can/is picked to play or not. I don’t think Jonathan Jackson has told Mackay that Caldwell can’t train on Thusday afternoons because he’s playing 5-a-side with the under 18s
7 January 2015 at 1:26 pm #137957I heard too that he was coaching the kids. Has he been.coaching kiernan as well in his spare time.

I wouldn’t take a blind bit of notice of what JJ says! ;)
