I was speaking to one of my counterparts in the Championship, and he told me he was really looking forward to the visit of Wigan Athletic because it was one of the glamour games of the season.
“I told him it was probably the first time that Wigan Athletic have ever been described as being a glamour team! He explained it was because we’d been in the Premier League for eight years, we were the FA Cup holders and we would be playing in Europe next season.
“And I suppose, if you take a step back, we probably are one of the big teams in that league this year.
He said that a couple of months after we’d won the FA Cup. Can’t see the problem in that comment.
Not a bad earner that, training the kids while still drawing a hefty wedge
Why is it an earner?
He’s either fulfilling part of the coaching role that come with his player/coach contract, or he’s doing it free of charge off his own back.[/quote]
Key word “part” I would say he’s a player over coach so my question was , is he playing or what ?Caldwell signed a one year contract with Wigan in July 2014. As part of the new agreement he was also given some coaching responsibilities.

Further, I agree that if he is only fulfilling part of his contract (for whatever reason) and still being paid his full salary, then it is indeed “a nice little earner” for him.And I’ll ask you. How is it a nice little earner?
Maloney, Waghorn, Watson, McCann, Ramis – they’ve all been on the treatment table – ie. not playing – recently for long periods, and have been claiming their full salaries.
Caldwell – although not playing, has been active with his coaching.
I’m sure he’d love to be playing as this could possibly be his last season.
He’s fulfilling part of his contract rather than none of it like the players mentioned above.

It’s a tongue in cheek hindsight thing Johnny! In other words what a load of bollocks that turned out to be !Ha ha ha He did also say at the same time that it was imperative that we got straight back into the top flight and that last season was the best chance of doing it! I say this because many on here thought that it wasn’t imperative at all? I know one thing, I would rather be in a relegation battle in the Prem than a relegation battle in The Championship!

My point is – when he said that, it was true. We were one of the big teams and one of the favourites to go up.I’m sure (I know) if you interviewed him now on the same subject you’d get a completely different answer!

The same cannot be said about the other players you mentioned as, in my opinion, they will return to first team football, however, I believe that Caldwell has had his playing days here at the club and will not return to first team football. I have no proof of that, I have not spoken to anyone close to the club, I have not received a postcard from DW with that Post Script on the bottom – it is just my analysis of observations made since the season began.

I accept your clarification, but I disagree.A ‘nice little earner’ is generally used to describe a lucrative venture of someone taking money from customers for a service or products.
So if he was charging people for coaching sessions then yes, but not if all he’s doing is fulfilling the part of his contract that he’s currently able to fulfil – ie. doing his job.
Caldwell was on the bench not so long ago – so I suspect he still has ambitions of playing.
Although if I’m wrong, surely all that’s happening is he’s being paid to be a coach rather than a plyer/coach?

correct , he ain’t playing and there’s no mention of him coming back in the near future. I bet there’s not many coaches on the money he’ll be drawing for training kids. If the injuries that bad that retire and concentrate on coaching.I wouldn’t be surprised to see a coaching team made up of Mackay, Black and Caldwell next season.

So, if I’ve gauged the feeling on this thread correctly, when I see him tomorrow night at football (Caldwell that is, not CupWinners) I’ll tell him that the consensus of opinion of this forum is that he should get his lazy arse back to training properly and earn his money, but on no account should he go anywhere near the first 18 on match days, right?
