Who really thinks we can sign “quality” players by getting out the cheque book?

All I seem to hear on here is, whelan is tight, whelan will not get his cheque book out blah! blah! It is a fact that we dont spend much compared to what we get in for transfers but there is a reason for this.

The reason we cant spend is because no-one wants to come to a small town team like wigan with a fanbase of around 12 – 15000 and play in front of an half empty stadium every other week. We sign players who are promising and then when they blossom we have to sell because other bigger teams turn their heads.

Anyone who wants to post any names of transfer targets (REALISTIC ONES) and how much they would cost and how they would improve our team, feel free. I think that not one will be above the £8 million price tag (REALISTICALLY) so you tell me how whelan is being tight, when he would have trouble persuading dave nugent to switch to wigan.

So why will they go to Fulham?
Im not going to argue, I just want you to tell me, before the Premier league, we were signing players from the same division, even higher divisions. Henri Camara, Arjan DeZeuuw to name two, but more than that, the team which took us to the Premiership, was virtually the same team that took us to the Championship. We didnt sell all our players, the ambition was there for the world to see. The Wigan people saw it as every season the crowds increased, until?
The crowds when Whelan took over where around 3000, yet we managed to sign quality players, build a new stadium and climb to the Premiership.
We were getting no financial help, the prize money for promotion about 100k. Then we get to the Premiership, get 60million off tv, the attendances increase 5 or 6 times, the sponsorship etc increases and every year we sell our best players.
I still go as last night and will continue to do so, but surely you understand the frustration. Were currently in negotiations to sign a Spanish second division midfielder with a dodgey ticker to replace our Premiership England under 21 international. To replace £18m of Premiership winger, we look to the Spanish second division.
Im going to stop now as I get myself worked up, if possible forget Whelan and just concentrate on the club.

Fulham is in London, which makes a big difference when a player is considering a move

They’re in Europe and their ground though small is usually quite full and in a very affluent area

This is probably why they tend to hang on to players better than us

“In the season that has just finished [2008/09] we think the growth is going to be a little bit lower, but it is going to get clubs up to that magical £2bn mark – which is a remarkable achievement, an average of £100m a club in the Premier League.”

I’m sure the Honduran 1st division is of a much lower standard than the Spanish 2nd divison?
Yet 2 of our best signings (Palacios, Figueroa) in recent years have come from Olimpia of the Honduran 1st division for buttons.
So where a player has played before he comes to Wigan is not relevant AT ALL.

And to add to that… Diame has been tracked by Europe’s finest in the past.
Wenger even admitted to the press he had watched him and was impressed.
So surely it would be a coup for Wigan to bag a player who has impressed the biggest clubs in the world?

I understand what you’re saying.. but I bet when Palacios first arrived you weren’t thinking “Oh finally… the signing we’ve been waiting for”… infact I bet it was more along the lines of “blaa blaa premiership team looking to the Honduran leagues blaa”

Have a bit of faith in the gaffer… I know that 1 thing Bobby is good at is finding cheaper talents.

Sick hearing people saying we dont get the crowds and thats why we dont get players, One of the reasons why we dont hold onto our crowds is that when we do get a decent side and it only needs a couple of players to make the next step Mr dw rips it apart, Just look at the signings martinez is after, he might as well have brought half the swansea team with him, Mr dw also acts as an agent because every time a players starts playing well he trys to sell them off as he does with his managers, It must be better to take fringe players from prem sides rather than ex swansea players who didnt make the championship play offs, It also makes me laugh when people keep on going on about fans moaning, Well i remember a certain benson getting shouted out and Mr dw wanted to take his ball home, and what happened after that benson shit on Mr dw, and looks whos back, yes mr benson, Trouble with our club no-one can voice there
                      opinion,

                        Bobbyswigan,
I also was there last night and will continue to go but you are missing the point.

When whelan took over and we bought “quality” and came up through the leagues we were still unknown and money talks with players in lower divisions. Now we are in the prem and have been for a few years people know wigan and what we are all about as a club.

When we first got to the premier league we were still unknown and players coming to play for us were excited at the prospect of a new club with a romantic story of how they rose through the leagues and saw it as a chance to build something.

Fast forward four years and the crowds have dwindled since our first term, and players realise that the new club are just a team punching above there weight in the big league. Sad though it is, but it is a fact.

                        pskl,
It is not the fact that are crowds are small that does not atract players, it is the fact that are stadium has a capacity of 25000 or so and it isnt full each home game. If the stadium was 16000 seater and was full every game it would not be an issue. This is because it seems like the support is there and present but 9000 empty seats and 4000 away fans on tuesday evening doesn’t go towards attracting these “big signings” posters on here talk about.

I am not having a go at our crowds, I think they are good for a town of our size. But the point is that we will never attarct the kind of players that dreamers on here think about, we have always done an excellent job of buying talent from abroad and bringing them on. When big clubs come in for these players they immediately want to leave for bigger and better things and that is just how it is.

When we build a team and need a few players to take it to the next level a bigger club comes in and takes away are best players because the players heads are turned, and the MANAGER in charge decides to sell them. Dave whelan is not the reason we sold palacios, cattermole, heskey, valencia, ellington?(sorry had to throw that one in), roberts, bullard, baines, to name but a few. The manager in charge at the time these players were sold realised that bigger clubs had turned there heads and they were no longer wanting to play for Wigan.

Whelan is not the greatest of chairmen but he is english, from wigan and has a few quid. I prefer to have him in charge rather than a foreign muppet who is just using us as a toy.

I love our club but as my original post says I think we as fans should get real.

It isn’t £60 million. £60 miilion takes into account TV payments and relegation parachute payments (as the promoted teams are favourites to go straight back down.) The correct figure from last season – according to The Independent- was between £31 million to £38 million for the less fashionable clubs – see link below.

We were mid table, so we were one of the better mediocre clubs so we probably got £36-38m.

Add that to the £25m in transfer fees we have recieved in the last few months.

Add all gate receipts, hospitality, advertising, sponsorship and not forgetting Egg rent, and the total must be approaching £75M

Even with a ludicrous wage bill,we must now be at least breaking even after the odd transfer or two.
