Long gone are the days when I let the result a football match affect my mood and my life, but I was a bit peed off last night.
But one thing that did cheer me up was the thought of a saddo dressed in red and white constantly pressing the refresh button on some or other sport site, waiting for an attendance below 10,000 to be announced, and then having to put it back in his kecks when it didn’t happen.
Thank goodness for those 5000+ visiting fans then.

Which you knew about days before the game ! You were praying that the 4800 away fans outnumbered the home contingent though weren’t you !! :P

And that is still more than watched a Rugby league international
….or play a mix of first teamers and fringe players and hope for the best.
And that’s the point and the difference last night. It wasn’t a mix – including players who play together regularly to give a solid framework for the fringe players to cling on to and develop with – but a group of 11 players who aren’t ever given the opportunity to play together as a unit.
In the first two rounds we used the former and proved a force to be reckoned with. Last night we did the latter and looked poor.
I can understand Martinez’s attitude to the cups to some extent but I wish he would be a little more up front about it. If he is not really interested in progressing in the Cups why talk them up i.e. how great it would be to get to a quarter final or talking about the romance and beauty of the FA Cup to be then beaten by a second division team. If Wigan had progressed to the q/f I wonder what kind of team he would have put out. It would seem that the earliers rounds are for experimenting but at some stage when the final may be in sight will he play his first team?
I would love if he would have a real go at the FA Cup (doubt it as I can’t see us being too far away from the bottom 3 by January). I just hope he doesn’t talk about the ‘romance’ ‘how the FA Cup is so special’ etc etc and then put out a reserve team. Tell it as it is Bob.

He’s done it for every single cup tie since he’s been here. How much more up front about it do you want him to be?[/quote]
I think you miss my point. I know he is very up front when it comes to picking his team for cup games. But come January and FA Cup time I don’t want to hear him talking about the ‘tradition and beauty of the FA Cup’ and how ‘special’ a competition it is. I’d much rather if he says ‘the FA Cup doesn’t mean much to us as our priority is league survival and I won’t be treating it as a special competition as I will be giving my reserves a run out’. In other words don’t bullshit us.

And if he says that he’ll be slated by the press and probably get in hot water with the FA too. And you’re missing my point which is that as Martinez has fielded weakened sides in every single cup tie so far it really doesn’t matter what he spins for the benefit of the fanshis bossthe presshis players, because you already know what is going to happen.

Fair enough. Do you think a good cup run and Premiership survival have to be mutually exclusive? I appreciate what Martinez has done to keep Wigan a Premiership side but don’t you think a crack at the League Cup or FA Cup would really enhance a Wigan season?

Yes, and I think it pathetic that footballers supposedly need so much rest. But it’s also about keeping fringe players happy and, let’s be real, we’re not the only club that does it.
So, all I;m sayig is we know how it is going to be so there is no use bleating about it every time we lose a cup game
