Egg – you yourself said “I think he means [RL is a better game] value for money wise (which i’m sure was proven a number of years ago)” than other sports
Just how the hell is that proven??????? To make something “value for money” you have to get some enjoyment/benefit from it. My local snail racing stadium might offer entry for 1p as opposed to £20-£30 to watch Latics but I know which one I’d consider to be the best vakue for money. As its down to personal opinion as to what you enjoy, you cannot “prove” RL is better value for money than any other sport & vcie versa
My own opinion on RL is that I enjoy it more than many other sports. I’ve played it & I’ve watched it on TV quite a few times & in stadiums on about 5 occasions. I don’t however like it enough to spend my hard earned spare cash on it
What I will also say is that yes, I have seen some really dull 0-0 draws in my 30 odd years of going watching football & yes you will very rarely get dull 0-0 draws in rugby league. However I’ve also watched really entertaining 0-0 draws along with really entertaining 1-1’s, 2-2’s & 3-3’s
What rugby league suffers from far more than football does & what for me makes for very dull viewing is that its far easier to have completely 1 sided, walkovers in RL or games of which you know one side will heavily beat the other within mnutes of the kick off. Results like Latics getting beat 9-1 are freak occurences but results like Warrior’s beating Catalan 56-0 are far more common place & (to me) just as dull, if not more so, than a 0-0 draw down the football
Just got my tickets for the Good Friday game. It’s the one rugby match I always try to go to.
The rugby benefit hugely from having a big rival. I’ve always felt that’s been a problem for Latics over the years.

Look at the link I put it my post. The ball stays in play far longer in a game of rugby league thus meaning there is more action for your money. That can’t be argued against. Obviously whether you deem that to be value is another story.
Football is the undisputed world game, while Rugby Union is fast becoming a prime time sport in the UK, and expanding across Europe.
Most rugby supporters despise both sports, if they understood what made the majority of sports fans tick, perhaps their sport would move forward without the need for artificial expansion teams.
As it stands I believe it’s odd’s on Rugby League will return to amateur status within 15 years, any Rugby League player with talent won’t be able resist multi-million pound Rugby Union contracts.

The ball may well be on the field of play longer in a game of rugby league but considering the stop/start nature of the sport its debatable for how much of that it is actually “in play” i.e. how long it takes between the ref shouting held to the tacklers getting off the player with the ball, to the player with the ball getting up & to him doing that kick back (the name of which escapes me) to re-start play
Still as I said, I don’t mind the sport, just not enough to pay regularly to watch it. Oh & I can’t stand Warriors just in case anyone on here who knows me thinks I was “turning”!!!

BARB viewing figures will tell you that Sky audiences for rugby union are falling and have been for some time. Rugby league on the other hand has seen figures increase and is the only sport that come anywhere close to football and cricket (the ashes).
Union has always been present in Europe but I can understand how someone who hasn’t got the foggiest about the game would think it is expanding when they see teams in Romania and Italy competing.
I think years of prejudice and discrimination have turned quite a few rugby league fans off the idea of union, however many still watch internationals on television. Don’t know many rugby league fans who ‘despise’ football or rugby union but the reverse is quite different.
Seems strange that fans of global spors such as football and rugby union would have such strong feelings towards a small, minority sport like rugby league. Don’t get many national journalists having a go at table tennis or ridiculing volleyball.
I’m not defending rugby league, but sometimes you have to acknowledge the facts and leave bias to one side.
“Don’t know many rugby league fans who ‘despise’ football or rugby union”
You’re either having a laugh or you walk round with your head in the clouds
I have never met a bigger bunhc of chips on their shoulders people in all my life than a hell of alot of rugby league fans.
You only have to read Aspinall’s comments in the WEP every day to see what one rugby league “expert” thinks of rugby union – what is it he calls it “Kick & Clap”. He’s also had rants about his SKY subscription money being used to “subsidise” the football coverage.
Look on your opinion pages of general sports magazines/internet site/teletext next time the rugby union world cup is on & see how many rugby league fans write in about what a poor sport it is & how great their’s is yet why does it get no media coverage
I’ve heard RL fans slating both sports on numerous TV & radio phone ins over the years
My wife’s uncle’s family (all saints ST holders) have a moan about football to me every time I see them
I’ve lost count of the number of times some RL fan in a shop/pub/etc.. in Wigan has told me they can’t stand football “its a p00fs game – watch a real man’s sport” etc…
The vast majority of football fans you’ll meet outside of Wigan (and places like Rochdale, Doncaster – where there’s no love lost between the clubs – and to a lesser extent Hull) when asked about rugby league are far more likely to say they don’t care (or know) about RL than they are to say they despise it
My view has always been each to their, but in my experience the majority of Rugby League fans would happily see Football and Rugby Union teams go to the wall, all in the mistaken belief these fans would somehow see the light and follow Rugby League.
I grew up when, to a man, Wigan rugby fans were jumping with joy at the very real possibilty of Latics folding, all this at a time when Latics were no threat whatsoever to their dominance.
Most telling of all, the three most knowledgable Wigan rugby fans I know all support Latics, two of whom also played Rugby League to a very high evel.
The big difference between these fellows and the usual message board, anti Latics, posters is they followed both clubs through the highs and lows. They were rattling around Central Park during the desperate late 70’s, early 80’s.
Unfortunately a great many of those that followed Wigan rugby when success arrived, this also applies to Latics fans in recent years, had no appreciation of were they came from, took success for granted, and showed no respect to clubs who were struggling in a similar manner to them just a few years earlier.
