Trust me the keeper will be a little annoyed with himself tonight !
He won’t.
I would ! ;)
Just seen it again.
I’m amazed how you could even consider blaming the keeper in any way.
Unless you’re just on the wind up? ;)
Not blaming him but I would have liked him to have been nearer to his goal line in the circumstances. Trust me, as a keeper you do NOT liked to be done like that !

I genuinely don’t understand the logic in that statement.
Half the key to being a keeper is narrowing the angles for the opposition to shoot at. If Robles had, for instance, been stood on his line then Remy would have had a far bigger target area to shoot at & Robles would have had a far bigger area to defend – by coming off his line he gave Remy a smaller target area & a smaller area for himself to cover. He was just beaten by an extremely accurate shot.
If I was going to be really picky I’d possibly say that his positioning was too close (angle wise) to his near post which meant that even though he’d narrowed the angle he gave himself just that little too much to cover on his far side & Remy was able to pick his spot to perfection. At a push (& I guess this is what you might be saying) by coming out at the moment he did Robles made Remy’s mind up to hit his shot their & then whereas if he’d stayed on his line remy might have been tempted to carry the ball just that little bit further which could have allowed the covering defender to get a tackle in on attempt to push him out wide
But that (IMO) is being really picky coz it was a quality strike
You can’t legislate for a goal like that. Ninety-nine times out of 100 away fans would have been jeering with their arms aloft as the ball hit row Z and the home fans would have been cursing him for attempting the impossible.
It turned out to be a wonder goal which didn’t give the defence a chance, just like the Aston Villa strike. It’s called the law of averages and the only exception to that rule is Messi.
I was also a keeper throughout my teenage years and if you are telling me you would of stood on your line when someone is charging towards your box then I think you need to go back to GK school Phil…
On his line, off his line or dangling from the cross bar like a monkey when a shot hits your side net with that sort of pace on it there is nothing you can do.
The team had practised the free kick routine involving Figueroa. They either neglected to select someone to play in Figueroa’s position, or that player forgot his part.

I didn’t say on his line. I meant nearer and more to the right because of the angle the striker was coming in at who was limited to where he could run because he was being closed down from his left. I would have saved it anyhow ! ;)

Hang on a minute…..if the striker was being driven out by a man on his left – so he can’t cut in on goal, and the keeper then positioned himself more to his right, wouldn’t that just open up the near post for the striker to aim at?!

He would still have the scope to defend his near post, I just thought he found himself slightly out of position in no mans land but that is just my opinion. It happens all the time and I did say that I wasn’t blaming him really ! Remy was a fair way out still when he took aim !
