Stating the obvious here, but i think we need some genuine full-backs to replace Figgy and Stam. You know the type – blokes who can defend. It will be interesting, but clearly Owen needs to move quickly in to the market to get them in and settled. Too many times have we got to August, before seeing a flurry of activity and the related poor starts.

With Alcaraz and Golobart gone, and Caldwell and Ramis both injured, we are seriously lacking in the centre half department. Again, hopefully, we can attract some solid, mobile players who can defend and keep it simple.

Owen says he likes his wingers – mcmanaman and maloney fit the bill and i think we’ll hang on to them. Cover for injuries, suspensions will be needed. Jean will be in and out under coyle.

Fivvie will have the opportunity to prove himself this season and i think mcarthur will find life ok. We all know mccarthy will be off and a dominant ball-winning midfielder is a must for us, i think. Ben Watson won’t be stretched at this level.

I honestly think Kone will stay and it would be good to see another target-man and inside forward come in.

Given the fact Europe will be a short-term factor, we probably need 10 players to cover the one’s leaving and then some cover to see us through the 60-odd games facing us.

      Thoughts ?

I think you’re wrong about Kone and Maloney staying

      :)

I just think that both of them are obviously good enough to play in the Premier and so if someone comes in for them at the right price, and I’m sure someone will, they will be off. You can’t blame the players for preferring to play in the Premier League if they have the opportunity. F*** that loyalty rubbish, it’s a job ast the end of the day.

If by some miracle Maloney was persuaded to stay, under no circumstances should he be shoved out on the wing. Putting him out there in the Championshiop would be a complete and utter waste.

If Owen does want to play with two out-and-out wingers would you see Maloney playing just off the target man ?

If we then had a flat back four ( Burnley and Bolton both did under our manager) then that would leave two in midfield, with the possibility of us being crowded out ?

Only thoughts on Owen’s comments about playing two wingers…………..

        I like our transfer policy.

Managers and players all know where the position in the fact that we wont stand in anybodys way as long as the asking price is met.

Only problem with it is if the asking price is met the day before the start of the season (as has happened in the past) it leaves us in an impossible situation in terms of recruiting a replacement.

I would like to see Whelan set a deadline alongside the asking price.

Kone, Maloney, Mcmanman and McCarthy are all in contract so they can always go in January or at the end of the season for a similar price.

I think Whelan has made a big mistake saying it may take 2 or even 3 seasons to get back up. He should have stuck to the original statement that we go all out to bounce back – that way players like Maloney and Kone may have been persuaded to do the one season in the Championship.

We need to keep as much of last seasons squad as we can , and saying we may be in the Championship for 2/3 seasons is not sending out the right message.

We obviously dont know what Coyles plans are yet but if push came to shove and he really wanted to play the 4-4-2 you would have to drop Beausajor and play Maloney in a McCulloch type role coming in as a third forward although you would need a strong LB to hold the fort if he is sitting up top alot.

Alternatively I think he could do well playing just behind two strikers but again you would need someone to hold the fort in midfield as with a couple of wingers it would leave us with 5 up front.

Alternatively to that you could play him as one of the two strikers which means pushing Kone up as the front man which IMO is a waste of his better qualities.

If as you say by some miracle we managed to keep hold of him I would like to see us switch between a 4-3-3 and a 4-4-2 at will using Jeany B as a back up plan to get some extra balls in the box if we struggled to break a team down down.

We have some tactical experts on this forum don’t we ! How come none of you are employed in football? Personally I would prefer it if every outfield player ran after the ball like back in the Junior school days ! Just a big pack of players moving around the pitch with the odd breakaway ! Football how it was intended to be played !

No idea what he’ll do. As Phil has pointed out, none of us are tactical geniuses, but my little knowledge tells me that if you have a player as technically gifted as Maloney playing in the Championship, the last thing you want to do is have him stuck out on the wing.

Coyle may have only played 4-4-2 in the past because that’s what suited the players he had. I suppose it depends on who he brings in.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but to my knowledge Antolin Alcaraz hasn’t yet gone anywhere yet.

That’s precisely what many of the ‘experts’ on here have been advocating for the last few years

I am no tactical expert by any means but if you stick around long enough at a game you usually get an idea of a players strength and weaknesses ;)

He’s gone. Out of contract, along with Golobart, Figgy and Uncle Joe
