What qualifies this?
I think that his style of play and his willingness to take his time with the ball, playing the game at his own tempo and him looking for that killer ball often is creating something of a facade that he is a very good player. He has a very continental style, plays in a similar vein as Kaká and Rivelino and what he brings to the football field is rare – but whether he is good enough to apply such an approach effectively in the Premier League remains to be seen, and I have doubts that it will be.
To me, he just seems like Jason Koumas with a fancy name and Catalunyan upbringing.
For Gomez at Wigan, read Arteta at Everton, Fabregas at Arsenal, Deco (for want of a better example) at Chelsea, and so on.
I’m not saying he’s as good as them, but he is that type of player. For Wigan Athletic to have that type of player, is a great thing. Perhaps he is a player who is in ‘Roberto’s own style’? A touch of Iberian class, creating openings and calmness on the ball.
I’ve always said, “We could sign Ronaldo and Latics fans would find fault”. Probably along the lines of “He shoots too much, and is greedy”. It is true.
Let’s APPRECIATE the qualities Gomez brings. He looks great from what I have seen (especially at Preston). Please.
