My question to this gentleman was ‘what is the point of booing, and what will it achieve?’
I’m sure Martinez, Whelan and the players are fully aware that the supporters aren’t happy when there’s a bad result, so is it a message to the press? We only get five thousand on for cup games, and three thousand of those boo their own team and manager.
Scenario: You are a big fan of a band – you have all their albums – you read all the Press about them and about their big homes and lifestyle.
They are playing near you and you scrape up the money to go and see them.
But on the night they amble around clearly uninterested. Chords go astray – the vocalist forgets half the lyrics. They don’t perform anything you recognise. They clearly can’t be bothered and at the end stroll off unconcerned.
Question: What do you do?
a) Applaud wildly and say how brilliant they are and they’ve just had an off night, or
b) Let them know this just isn’t good enough, despite the fact that you’ll carry on buying their albums?4 February 2010 at 1:45 am #21296Garswood_latic
I would suggest that they go to watch another band, who are nearly always note perfect.
4 February 2010 at 2:31 am #21305In fairness to NatDan, I’ve just noticed the suggestions he came up with for a new manger. Curbishley (not the worst suggestion), Davies (remember Derby??), McLaren (did he really do anything recently apart from watch a match holding a brolly), Reid (not managed at the top level for a few years, since he made a mess of Sunderland).
4 February 2010 at 12:22 pm #21319“Why cant we get somebody in to help him instead of having those useless friend jones and barrow supporting him”
Here’s a couple of reasons why not:
1) If the chairman, director of football or whoever decides that he needs someone in to help him then they are as good as admitting they don’t think he’s up to the job. That would undermine him somet chronic & to be frank you’d be better of just sacking him than have that scenario
2) the “useless friends Jones & barrow” are exactly who Martinez asked Whelan to bring in for him. To bring someobody else in would be for Whelan & co to be saying “those 2 blokes are crap, therefore we think your judgement is crap” & again it undermines him4 February 2010 at 1:13 pm #21322Garswood
If I were that obsessed with a band, I would appreciate that they have off days, as I had presumably been to watch some great gigs in the past.
No, I wouldn’t cheer wildly at the end if it was that bad, nor would I boo them. I’d probably shrug my shoulders disappointedly and leave.
If next time I went to watch them, and I was equally disappointed, I’d perhaps consider not watching them again and not buying their albums.
Or, the more likely reaction would be to remember that there have been some great gigs in the past, and that future performances can get better.
What would you do in the same scenario?
Perhaps I should be accused of emotional snobbery, as I’ve clearly overestimated our supporters’ capacity for reasonable displays of emotion other than jumping up and down whilst flicking the v at the opposition fans, or booing and hurling insults at our manager and team.
What’s next? Cries of ‘You don’t know what you’re doing’ and throwing season tickets at Martinez? We all laughed our socks off at the delusional Newcastle fans when they were doing it.
