Maybe the council should start looking at their own salaries before they start to cut services, over 9000 council workers/managers have salaries over £140k in the UK. I bet none of those decide to reduce their wages or over inflated pensions. Do the maths, £15m for the pope to visit the 4m or so Catholics in the country, seems fair enough. £1.2bn for the council big wigs……
21 September 2010 at 12:19 pm #46950I wouldn’t just look at the salary & condemn it
Look at the jobs they do, the size of the council & all manner of stuff & then compare it to the salaries of private company directors in control of similar sized firms.
The fact of the matter is that if you want the best people to run your firm/council/whatever then you have to pay them the going rate.
Now I aint saying any particular council is well/badly run or that they couldn’t make substantial savings but just because they work for the public sector doesn’t mean they should be paid in buttons – offer the job up for £30k a year & see a) who applies & b) what monkey gets the job
As for the pope’s visit – I’m an atheist so had no interest in him coming over, but if the UK govt recognises the vatican at a state even though the UN doesn’t then fine his costs should be covered just like the costs of any other head of state who visits is covered. The issue of how much is deemed appropriate to cover a state visit from any head of state is another matter
21 September 2010 at 12:32 pm #46953To be fair £15 million to the uk goverment is chicken feed!
21 September 2010 at 12:45 pm #46955Landgate, i am now putting my head down with big fat red cheeks and slowly hiding myself away in the corner of the pub!!! i have said before i am not the brightest!!!
Thank you.
On the pope issue it is not aimed at being anti Catholic far from it i just want to support the millions of Public service and Private companies who are suffering at this time i just think the timing of the visit with the child abuse issue was bad.
Subject closed for me i have shaken the hand of the Dala Lama and i can honestly say it was an incredible feeling of awe that came over me but that’s another story i have got lots you know.
