…Martinez has decided to leave, the cheque book has done a vanishing act.
28 May 2013 at 7:16 pm #114722Can’t help but somehow feel the same. The conspiracy theorist in me suspects this whole “he cant take us forward” comment is to save face for whelan and the fact he won’t pay for facilities. It isn’t the best thing to say before applying for an Everton job, I cant promote a club from the championship but I can push an Everton team up the table???
Perhaps it’s just me.

It’s not just you, I bet all the new training facilities and academy would have been based on us being a Premier League club.
29 May 2013 at 1:24 pm #114894For ACADEMY now read Wigan Boys Club
29 May 2013 at 3:47 pm #114904It’s not just you, I bet all the new training facilities and academy would have been based on us being a Premier League club.Of course they were, the Academy was being developed and build to Premier League specifications. Very few Championship clubs will have anything like that kind of standard of facility. Like it or not, when you get relegated something has to give and this is the obvious one, sadly.
It’s a real shame and I really thought that Whelan may have thrown his business plan out of the window a little and gone for it but it seems he has stuck to his guns. Maybe RM thought he was going to do it too.

This is my thoughts on the situation too.
Hopefully if we go back up at first time of asking any plans that may be put on hold can be put in place.
Someone like Rene Mulenstein (probably failed spelling) may be the man to make that happen.
29 May 2013 at 4:51 pm #114911I prefer to look at it another way, because of martinez’s abject failure Whelan now has perhaps a third of the income he forcast in his long term business plan, and when bob was warned of stormy seas ahead he has chosen to climb into the life boats, even before the women and children, whereas a true captain would have attempted to steer HMS Wigan Athletic back to port.

I’m sure there is more to him leaving than meets the eye and maybe one day we’ll find out. One thing is for certain, all those pontificating on here that they knew/know everything that wasis going on between Whelan and Martinez throughout this whole episode have either been guessing, making things up or listening to people who have been making things up.
29 May 2013 at 6:04 pm #114920Feel sorry for you LMB any fair point you have usually gets lost amist a sea of moaning and whinging.
But to be fair to Whelan and you I guess Whelan could argue that any failure to build the new training ground lays upon the fact Roberto failed to keep us up.
Personally I think Whelan should of coughed up but its very easy to verbally spend someone elses money.
29 May 2013 at 6:20 pm #114923Given that you have done nothing but slag him off for four years I would have thought the last thing you would have expected Martinez to do was show some honour? Not one person on this planet has heard me “slag him off” for close on 18 months. Even myself regarded as the darkest of the dark by many had fallen under Martinez’s svengali aura.

Oh sorry, it was just two and a half years then. ;)
OK, I’ll concede you have stepped back from the brink a bit. Others may take longer to be convinced of your conversion though
29 May 2013 at 6:28 pm #114926Others may take longer to be convinced of your conversion though :ohmy:He can always play them that podcast where he was licking Martinez’s bumhole.
That should do the trick.
29 May 2013 at 8:54 pm #114942I would always be one saying that we should not spend money for the sake of it, and nor should we put ourselves in a dodgy position because of it. I however can’t help but feel when facilities and academy are concerned surely the sooner its sorted the better? How much would the above cost? This isn’t like were forking out on someone that can get injured after the first tackle in the game, once it’s there its stopping there.
29 May 2013 at 10:41 pm #114954Has any of you stopped to think that it may not be just down to finance? We have all seen the protest posters all over Wrightington and maybe getting to first base is proving a real problem.Has planning permission been approved?.Im fed up of hearing how tight Mr Whelan is when he has put the club on the map and saved it from extinction. Its all too easy for fans to belly ache about lack of interest in spending when none of actually know how much it takes to run a Premier League club. Two week ago we were in heaven and all was rosy now your slagging off Mr Whelan for Martinez running for the hills.I simply will not accept this is the case.Martinez brought us the FA Cup Mr Whelan gave us the Club the Prem and the Cup and will continue to build Wigan Athletic now that the other fellow has bolted.Give the guy the credit he has more than earned FFS.
29 May 2013 at 11:45 pm #114960Maybe whelan wanted a fresh face in charge and is happy martinez walked deep down lets face it he was giving martinez a week to think about things but before the week was out gave everton permission to speak to martinez just a thought
