Whilst Ray Wilkins has resolved his thing with Chelsea, why not make a punt and bring him in as Bob’s Number 2.

If he has hope for Bob and wants him to succeed then why not give him the best possible help?

I am a pro Martinez person but I have to agree with most posters on here, we look weak at putting an attack together and never look like scoring.

If you look at Bolton, a club similar to ours, how many of the Bolton players would you swap with ours…I think not many (if any – and no AlHabsi shots please) but they pass the ball well AND SCORE GOALS TO WIN GAMES.

its pi$$ poor how when we adapt to our 443, one player is too wide acting as the winger and the other player is too wide on the left or lost in midfield somewhere.

I think that is a good shout as I was thinking something similar.

However, then I remembered what his nickname was in his playing days – “the crab”.

His sideways passing background should fit in with our style of play perfectly

What good would bringing him or anyone do? We’d play the defensive 4-5-1 spanish style even if Sir Alex or Jose were assistant to Roberto.

i think your wrong on this one swindon -wilkins sideways passing would be a vast improvement – on the backwards stuff we witness now.

He was known as Butch but he was also called “The Crab”

Of course we would, because that’s the formation those two prefer too :) Yes, I know you put the word ‘defensive’ in there.

My beef with the the way we play 451/433 is that our midfield is too far away from the front man; wide men too wide, central players too deep. That, and the fact that there is very little movement off the ball, which forces us into the conservative possession game.

The few times that it has worked are not enough to outweigh the times that it hasn’t. It’s probably time for a change – of formation, not manager ;)

Off the top of my head I would swap their keeper Jaskawhatsisface, Cahill, Holden, Elmander, Davies & the Korean lad for their Latics counterparts

As for the “bring in an experienced no. 2” argument – I remember this rearing its head last season as a last resort of the Bobby supporters & my argument then as it is now is why?
By acknowledging that he needs to bring someone else in basically to show him what to do you are admitting that he isn’t good enough on several fronts:
          1) He is a bad judge of who he needs as his backroom team
          2) he needs to have somebody alongside him showing him what to do
          3) what ever he has in place now & what ever he is trying to get them to do isn’t working

So as i said basically its adn admission that he isn’t good enough. If you’re saying bring someone in alongside him to show him the ropes until he is good enough to stand on his own 2 feet then why should Bobby get that treatment?? Pull any tom, dick or harry out of the crowd – they won’t be good enough but bring someone in alongside them who is & who can teach them until they are good enough!!!

As for Butch Wilkins – I remember him in his final season at Old Trafford (where I had a LMTB at the time as a youngster – before I knew any better) & what a feckin player he was. He oozed class & its no wonder AC Milan snapped him up. United’s midfield of him, Remi Moses & Bryan Robson was superb

Welcome to the darkside Griff – you’re just one more limp wristed defeat away from calling for his head now!!!!

The problem is IMO that we don’t have the personnel suited to the 4-5-1 system & Bobby’s insistance on forcing whatever personnel he has available into that system rather than adapting the formation to who he has available is going to be his downfall – maybe he’s never heard of the expression that there is more than one way to skin a cat.

I’ve said it before (today even) and I’ll say it again… there is no certainty in my opinion that this bunch will start to play any better if we play 442. I think they have proved they can play 451/433 – possession-wise. The main thing missing is that creative spark and tempo of play and there is no evidence to suggest that changing the formation will improve that.

As I say, I am all in favour of giving it a go to see if it would make a positive difference.

Also, on the calling for his head front, I’ll let you into a little secret. Immediately after the Chelsea 0-6, I suggested to a select group of close friends (not on here, obviously) that Martinez should be sacked. That wasn’t a knee-jerk reaction to the defeat as such, I just felt that the point had come whereby the players were rolling over too easily and I felt they weren’t interested in playing for him anymore.

After sobering up and a good night’s sleep, I changed my mind.

Griff, how many games are you going to give Roberto before you return to your views of earlier in the season?

I want Roberto to do well but following our meagre goals ratio and our “tame” displays I’m starting to feel like I did when Hutchings was in charge. Like I’m watching a sinking ship :o

Yep, it’s very hard watching us at the moment, Swindon. I’ve always had fairly low expectations for us in the Premier League – I expected them to throw us out halfway through that first season for just being too rank bad :) – but we’re still in there hanging on by a thread.

Lately though, I cannot see us beating anybody. I think since the Fulham game – I was shocked at how badly we played and how disinterested we seemed that day – we have looked like a team destined for the drop. That wouldn’t upset me that much to be honest, it’s about 5 years overdue.

I still think a lot of the blame lies with the players. People might not like the way Martinez has us playing but it has proved successful on occasions so if they can do it oen week, why not the next?

But, the buck stops with the manager I suppose. Maybe Stoke’s robust approach will jolt us into action.

Spare a thought for the ball on Saturday, too. When we have it, it will have carpet burns and travel no more than 5 yards at time and when they have it, it will suffer cuts, bruises and vertigo :)

I have my kneck brace ready to watch this style of football.

Bottom line is that if we can put a run together we will be out of this, time will start to slip away quickly.

          #52263

Putting a run together? I’d settle for a win on Saturday to start with and I don’t care how we do it.

I would however prefer it if Roberto got his players playing “sin miedo” for a change!
