why were they booing
11 February 2010 at 3:24 am #22381In the first half, I was sat in WS4 with quite a smug grin on thinking to myself ‘you know what-it’s working, this Martinez revolution’. And it does at times. Diame sitting deep to break up the play, McCarthy getting the ball and keeping it simple, Zoggy tearing their right back to bits. And it does work. We were unplayable first half – same against Birmingham.
Just when I’m starting to get comfortable, we hit self-destruct. Scharner started to wander like a headless chicken meaning midfield goes walkies and we started giving the ball away far too easily. With no out ball to a striker when we’re under pressure, the defence can’t come out and we sit deeper and deeper. It was inevitable that Stoke were going to score (yet another header conceded by the way).
So the Bob plan does work but he needs to stop filling round holes with square pegs-Scharner is not an attacking midfielder. And I wish he would hold his hands up and admit that Gomez simply aint upto it. He should have been taken off for Moreno – not Diame (who was having his best game for us in my view).
If Bob tweaks these problems we’ll be fine. If he’s a stubborn get we’re going down. Simple as.

Fairly accurate that, imo. I think Bob is stubborn and as you say, if his tactics were working at the start of the game, then that is some evidence that it can work and some justification for his being stubborn.
However, he does need to find a plan B. That said, I am certain that he doesn’t say to the players at half-time: “Right lads, that was great. Now, they are going to come at us all guns blazing so make sure you go back out there, forget everything we did in the first half, stop concentrating, stop tackling and start misplacing a few passes. I’ll do my bit by bringing on Jordi in about 20 minutes time to f*** it all up big time.”
11 February 2010 at 12:53 pm #22397It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall in the dressing room at h-t. To see who delivers the bollockings / tactics / motivation etc.
I was slightly surprised to hear the answer of De Zeuw upon finishing his career when asked who was the best manager he played under – stated it would be a cross between Harry Redknapp for his motivational / handling of players and Bruce Rioch for his tactics and technical input.

As much as it pains me to say it Bob does have a plan B, unfortunately it has cost us points against Everton and Stoke. On both occasions, his substitutions turned the game against us. As much as i try, I cannot understand his thinking and my heart sank when I saw who was going off and who was coming on.
In the heat of battle (as both games undoubtedly were) you dont bring gladiators off and replace them with poets and philosophers (speaking metaphorically and Thomas excepted). Bramble, Scharner et al must have felt like crying after all the effort they had expended and I do feel Bob let them down.

Brilliant articulate post – love it
Gladiators, poets and philophers – superb stuff

:roll:Of course, why? don’t you?
11 February 2010 at 8:34 pm #22449May I answer the original question, with a question?
Who can you name off the top of your head, who would A, come to Latics (Realistically) and B, would be up to the job?
Because try as I might, I cannot think of one outstanding candidate. Apart that is, from Paul Jewell. But WOULD he come back? I don’t know. Perhaps he likes his job on Sky Sports panel? I wouldn’t blame him.
So really, although things are far from ‘hunky-dory’ with the team, and how we are doing, I won’t shout Martinez out. Really, I’m torn between thinking he isn’t actually up to the task in hand, but then I think ‘what’s the alternative?’
Some will come out and say Mark Hughes. To which I will just say ‘No chance’. So there we are.
12 February 2010 at 1:06 am #22499I do think Martinez does need to look at himself tactically, however, I also think he will get it right. I thought the other night though, he definately got the substitution wrong, should have bought Moses on to play behind Hugo if he was going to take Scotland off.

I thought the other night though, he definately got the substitution wrong, should have bought Moses on to play behind Hugo if he was going to take Scotland off.Or even left Hugo where he was and put Moses straight up front. We already know that Hugo cannot play that role so I’d have liked to see Moses have a bash.
12 February 2010 at 1:03 pm #22522Someone said he never put Moses on because it was ‘too physical a match’.
But every match from now on is going to be physical, isn’t it?
I hope we weren’t playing for a draw, but I think we might have been. I feel next Tuesday will be the final straw for many, if we lack passion, etc.
Massive 6 pointer.
12 February 2010 at 1:16 pm #22525My view for what its worth is this
RM and his coaching staff wont be the ones to get the players up for it / motivate etc
I reckon the strong dressing room characters, the ones who are respected will sort it themselves – in that bracket I put …………………..
……………………still thinking………………………………..
maybe Caldwell…………………….dooh cant think of many more ……………..
12 February 2010 at 1:36 pm #22527Sorry this is two day old thread, and I’ve only just come round to reading it, but I had to pass comment.
In natdan’s initial post there’s a line that perfectly sums up the expectations of a lot of the more negative posters on here:
‘I understand that everyone will say give him time etc but time will not sort out his lack of knowledge on tactics.’
So, presumably, football managers are born with tactical expertise?
When Bruce left, people expected a quick fix, with quick results. Forget the fact that he’s never managed at this level before, and that’s he’s relatively inexperienced as a manager at any level, he’s obviously clueless and to quote natdan again, ‘time will not sort out his lack of knowledge’.
The longer you study, the more knowledge you acquire. So natdan etc, maybe if Martinez is given ample time, he may ‘sort out his lack of knowledge’.
