With the lack of success of English clubs in Europe again this season does anyone else think that The Premier League has been hyped up and put on too high a pedestal by the media or is this season just a blip?
Also one of the original reasons for forming The Premier League was to strengthen the national side and this has been knocked out of the water many times with some average at best performances by England on the international playing field.
Can we or should we expect more from The League in bringing club and international silverware back to England or is it just a league put in place to subsidise the lifestyles of a group of arrogant international playboys where even academy youngsters are earning crazy amounts just to keep them at the top few elitist clubs? Our little club was in The League not too long ago and most of the cash we turned over from our pay outs went to just exist in that league leaving us now in this precarious position rather than a club bulging at the seems with money. It is strange that every year at the Championship play offs how much the promotion is worth to clubs but in reality it is only worth that if it isn’t spent on just trying to exist in that league.
Overrated and over hyped what does anyone think?20 March 2015 at 12:08 pm #140522It’s gone downhill since we came out of it
20 March 2015 at 1:00 pm #140523Yes. Its a league of greed, where the rich get richer. Its a league where there are only 2 potential winners, and only 6 clubs that realistically stand a chance of making the top 4. Its a league where 8 clubs start the season with expectations of a European spot and 12 clubs start with survival the only target.
Its a league that is full of foreign merceneries that come over for a big pay-day, then use their foreign agent to angle for another big money move before their contract is up.
Its a league that stifles youth development, from the largest to the smallest. Man City haven’t had a youth team player come through since Micah Richards. Sorry to bring it up, but during your 8 years, not a single youth team player made it through to the first team.
Its a league that doesn’t give a toss about fans, and will happily re-schedule games at short notice to suit their tv paymasters, even if it means that the fans of both clubs have no ability to get home via public transport.
Its a league full of average players earning sums of money in a month that a soldier earns in a career. The likes of Steven Fletcher (7 goals in 2 years) spending a month’s wages on his new £200,000 car epitomises everything that is wrong with modern day football.
To put it into perspective, I’ve spent most of my working life with men and women who received just over £10 per day as a “bonus” for the privilege of being shot at, bombed, rocketed on a daily basis for 6 months in Afghanistan and Iraq.
As a follower of a club whose PL existence is under threat on an annual basis, do I care if they get relegated? Answer – Not really, as I’m utterly sick of it, and what its done to English football.

Agree with all of that

An cap is required on overseas players including youth players how many maybe 6 per squad/club no more than 4 per match day squad
20 March 2015 at 2:45 pm #140527Hasn’t something like that (home-grown) already been implemented – and abused.
Chelsea’s 25-man squad includes 3 “home grown” players:
John Terry
Gary Cahill
Cesc Fabregas!Liverpool’s includes 9, but only Lord Gerrard was developed through them. The remaining 8 were signed from other clubs.
Man City have 5, which includes Frank Lampard!!
Sunderland have a few – all of which were signed elsewhere. Somehow, a current Swedish international is amongst their quota!
20 March 2015 at 3:08 pm #140528Here are some stats….
Over the past ten years England has had more teams in the Champions League and Europa League than any other country.
The figures are:
Champions League
England 8
Spain 5
Germany 4
Italy 3Champions League & Europa League combined
England 11
Spain 9
Germany 5
Portugal 5
Italy 3
Scotland 1
Ukraine 1
Russia 1That suggest to me that the Premier League is certainly up there in terms of quality despite disappointing results over the past two seasons.
Also, the Premier League is still the most watched league in the world – hence why it can command huge license fees.
You may call it the ‘Greed League’, but it’s doing exactly what all the other leagues would do if they had the demand.
And, all leagues have one or two clubs that tend to run away with it each season.
Over the past twenty years the number of different winners of the Premier League and its equivalents have been:
England 5
Germany 6
Spain 5
Netherlands 5
Italy 5
Portugal 4
Scotland 2
France 10 (although I suspect this will now change because of the investment in PSG)I await your comments….
20 March 2015 at 3:22 pm #140529Bundesliga all the way for me but I am Lord Haw Haw! ha ha ha
20 March 2015 at 9:46 pm #140533I remember people on here who were almost wishing that the tics would get relegated to the Championship.
The dross served up in this division the past two years has been there for everyone to see.
There hasn’t really been one team that I’ve seen and thought, top quality them. Even this year, Boro, Derby, Norwich, Bournmouth and even Watford the other night, nowt special. If we could have retained some our prem stars, we would have pissed this league.
I understand what people are saying about the greedy, arrogant, millionaires who frequent and run the EPL but IMHO, the standard of football is 5 leagues above what we are experiencing now.
Not just that, the refs, the pitches everything about the Championship is totally crud. I’ve watched Wigan since non-league and I’d watch threm if they returned to it, but from a football and all round quality perspective, I would love us get back in the prem again.
I’ve not seen enough of other European countries football or management of the leagues to make any justified comments / comparisons, but I suspect from the bits I’ve seen, even the German Leagues are no better than ours.A bit off the topic matter but just my opinion.
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!25 March 2015 at 5:54 pm #140660Sorry to bring it up, but during your 8 years, not a single youth team player made it through to the first team.Aside from the man of the match in the cup final

26 March 2015 at 2:13 am #140668Only ever 5 winners of it since it started in 1992 ,23 years ago!
Chelsea,Man utd,Man City ,Blackburn and ArsenalIn the 23 years prior to 1992 we had 7 different champions Leeds,Arsenal,Liverpool,Everton,Aston Villa,Nottingham Forest, Derby County .
Not many more I grant you but check out some of the unfashionable names like Forest and Derby and also remember Forest won it straight after a promotion in 1977-78 season.
it is overrated for sure but interesting especially when a struggling club like Burnley turns over a team like City and it would be nice to see little clubs like Bournemouth and Brentford get up there next season although the TV bosses would hardly relish paying 10 million a game to screen those two would they?26 March 2015 at 2:58 pm #140669Only ever 5 winners of it since it started in 1992 ,23 years ago!

Premier League is exactly the same as all major leagues in terms of the low number of winners:
England 5
Germany 6
Spain 5
Netherlands 5
Italy 5
Portugal 4
Scotland 226 March 2015 at 4:31 pm #140670Only ever 5 winners of it since it started in 1992 ,23 years ago!

Since its inception? No
Currently? It depends who you areAn armchair fan who pays his subscription continues to do so, because they believe they are getting value for money. Games have incident, excitement, controversy and at the beginning of the season there are several team who could win the League.
A fan of a promoted club gets caught up in the excitement but after surviving for a few seasons apathy sets in. The exciting moments become few and far between.
Results in the Champions League haven’t been great recently, but this goes in cycles.
For what it is worth, I think that the Premier League is still the best overall.
Bundesliga wishes they have the global marketing power of the Premier League and is trying to catch up.
However, while the stadium experience is better, Bayern are consistently winning the league with weeks to spare and are buying all the best players from their nearest rivals.26 March 2015 at 5:16 pm #140675Sorry to bring it up, but during your 8 years, not a single youth team player made it through to the first team.

Is that the one that came through Everton’s youth acadamy first?
