Who spent 10 years at Liverpool before joining Wigan in 2007.
26 March 2015 at 5:47 pm #140677Sorry to bring it up, but during your 8 years, not a single youth team player made it through to the first team.
Aside from the man of the match in the cup final
Is that the one that came through Everton’s youth acadamy first?
You are right, but that was the model that Latics had to go with.
Baines and McManaman both came from Everton at a young age, but generated more than 10M in profit.Compare it with Jack Collback. I believe he was with Sunderland since age 10, but decided to go to Newcastle on a bosman. Was it worth the youth investment?
26 March 2015 at 6:31 pm #140678As he was an instrumental member of the side that won at Chelsea & Man Utd last season to secure another season of top flight football, then I would say yes he was. That said, he wasn’t worth the money he was asking in wages and a free transfer was the outcome. He got selected for the England squad in August on the back of those last 10 or so games. However its fair to say that he hasn’t exactly set the world alight up the road despite his £50,000+ a week salary.
The academy of light has paid for itself though. Off the top of my head, Martin Waghorn was sold to Leicester for £3 million. Grant Leadbitter was sold for £2.6 million, and Jordan Henderson was sold for £20 million. There are currently 20 U18s and 15 U21s – many of whom are out on loan to lower league clubs in order to gain experience.
26 March 2015 at 6:54 pm #140680With an operating loss of £19.8M on a turnover of £101M, there will need to be a few more like Henderson too.
26 March 2015 at 7:13 pm #140682They would be a problem for a club with an owner worth nowt until his granddad shuffles off this mortal earth.
Fortunately, we currently have a billionaire owner who can cover that sort of loss with the interest earned in a month on his other ventures. Its probably even tax-deductible!

26 March 2015 at 9:22 pm #140687Only ever 5 winners of it since it started in 1992 ,23 years ago!
Chelsea,Man utd,Man City ,Blackburn and ArsenalIn the 23 years prior to 1992 we had 7 different champions Leeds,Arsenal,Liverpool,Everton,Aston Villa,Nottingham Forest, Derby County .
Not many more I grant you but check out some of the unfashionable names like Forest and Derby and also remember Forest won it straight after a promotion in 1977-78 season.
it is overrated for sure but interesting especially when a struggling club like Burnley turns over a team like City and it would be nice to see little clubs like Bournemouth and Brentford get up there next season although the TV bosses would hardly relish paying 10 million a game to screen those two would they?I postd about this earlier.
Premier League is exactly the same as all major leagues in terms of the low number of winners:
England 5
Germany 6
Spain 5
Netherlands 5
Italy 5
Portugal 4
Scotland 2
Is the Premier League overrated?
Since its inception? No
Currently? It depends who you areAn armchair fan who pays his subscription continues to do so, because they believe they are getting value for money. Games have incident, excitement, controversy and at the beginning of the season there are several team who could win the League.
A fan of a promoted club gets caught up in the excitement but after surviving for a few seasons apathy sets in. The exciting moments become few and far between.
Results in the Champions League haven’t been great recently, but this goes in cycles.
For what it is worth, I think that the Premier League is still the best overall.
Bundesliga wishes they have the global marketing power of the Premier League and is trying to catch up.
However, while the stadium experience is better, Bayern are consistently winning the league with weeks to spare and are buying all the best players from their nearest rivals.
Quite surprised nobody has commented on your post doglatic because that is a very good analogy
