Anyone who uses the abbreviation “EPL” faces a lengthy ban :P

I think it’s going to be a long, hard season too.

I don’t know what attitude Coyle will adopt towards the Europa League. Bigger teams than Wigan have found the away trips exhausting – it takes experience – and resources – to adapt to them. So I can easily see Coyle sending weakened teams abroad.

We’ve been used to the problems of losing our better players and integrating new players each season. It’s contributed to the slow starts Wigan have made. This season will be the same – but the changes may be even greater than usual.

The Championship kicks off two weeks before the Premier League, so Coyle hasn’t got much time before we start all over again. I am looking forward to it. And, hopefully, we will be able to compete better both home and away.

I’m looking forward to winning more than we lose in the Championship and enjoying the buzz of winning regularly again.

The logic of this makes no sense. You want to see Wigan win regularly yes? But that would (hopefully) lead to promotion and then getting mullered every week. If it doesn’t lead to promotion then I imagine we lose in the play offs/get knocked out in the play offs every season?

There isn’t a single team in the Championship that is happy just staying there, all 24 teams have long term ambitions to get promotion. We can’t just be satisfied with ‘winning more than we lose’, we must try and get promotion whilst the whole club still has the Premier League mentality and believes the Prem is where we belong. The longer we go without promotion, the more we’ll accept that we are a Championship club (like Ipswich, Leeds, Middlesbrough etc have).[/quote]

Maybe we are a Championship club because we were certainly punching well above our weight in the Prem, particularly the last few seasons !

Then why all the criticism of Martinez, Phil?

      #116649

Sorry but I dont agree with the sentiments on this thread that anything other than promotion is acceptable.

We have a very talented squad and one of the best incomes in English football outstide the premier league.

Yes its a tough league but so is professional league in England as can be seen in the cup fixtures every year!

If we lose our better players the funds will be there to replace them.

Maybe I am a little biased but apart from QPR throwing money in your face I cant think of a more attractice prospect than us if you were looking to sign for a Championship this season.

If we think anything less than promotion is the aim for this season then we have already accepted we are a Championship team.

Yes we were always up against it in the PL but 7 out of 8 years we deserved to be on merit not peoples opinions which count for diddle!

My only criticism of RM was his obstinacy coupled with his lack of a contingency plan when things were going tits up ! I also don’t think he is the manager that DW has bigged him up to be but I guess time will tell on that front, good luck to him, he is going to need it ! ;)

I have said it before and I will say it again.

How can you call Martinez stubborn? the man changed the formation in our team more times over his 4 years in charge than any other PL club in history!!!

You and certain others seem to hint that because he didnt go sh*t we’re losing right start twatting it up the field to 5ft Maloney he is stubborn.

        Its a moronic statement!

And despite most of us being quite prepared to move on from this whole lightside/darkside Martinez affair certain posters seem to revel in it!

I was asked a question and so I answered it not that it has anything to do with you ! Like I said, time will tell to see if he is the new ‘Special One’ he has the pefect opportunity to prove himself now and good luck to him ! :)

Unless you would like to converse with him via PM this is an open discussion ;)

I am forced to reiterate due to your non response.

Roberto Martinez is the least stubborn manager we had in the Premier League.

Now in the spirit of the thread title “It’s Coyle, lets get over it” lets do just that!

We have a manager who I am told will be able to provide attacking threat but bow to your demands of being a little more direct than Martinez.

I am hoping to see a less post critical Phil next season and a less militant me :)

Martinez’ tactical changes have been subtle and fascinating, both from game to game and during the progress of individual games.

Most fans have recognised his formations with three or four at the back. But I think many changes have gone over their heads. I wish we had had a commentary from him explaining just what he was doing and why. I’d love to attend one of his coaching sessions.

So far, I don’t think Coyle has shown anything like the same innovation and imagination. And I have been to quite a number of games at Burnley and Bolton.

Wigan and Bolton used to be paired so that when one was at home, the other was away. Next season there are days when Blackpool, Blackburn, Bolton and Wigan are all at home.

Maybe I am a little biased but apart from QPR throwing money in your face I cant think of a more attractice prospect than us if you were looking to sign for a Championship this season.

Think I’ll have to disagree with you there Salford coz looking at it objectively there will be far more attractive prospects to Championship players than Latics I’m afraid.
Going off prestige, history & club attendances alone (not that I judge things on that but plenty of players & supporters do) Latics will be way down the list behind Birmingham, Watford, Charlton, Leeds, Brighton, Middlesbrough, Leicester, Forest, QPR, Sheff Wednesday, Ipswich & (though it pains me to say it) Bolton. Playing at the DW in front of 10-12k on average won’t be the most appealing prospect
However most players will put that to one side I would imagine if a club pays enough but again I would imagine that Latics will be somewhat behind virtually all of those clubs (many of whom are being bankrolled by very wealthy people) with the exception of possibly Birmingham & Sheffield Wednesday. Even when Whelan was putting his own money into Latics our wage bill was still dwarfed by Ipswich’s during our promotion season even when they were pleading poverty. Latics might have turned in a profit last season but that was with £40mill of TV money & the extra corporate & advertising income that being in the premier league brought in. The TV money has at least halved now & the other income will fall accordingly so Latics will not be able to pay new signings what the Prem League signings were on seeing as how there is a big hole in Latics income stream this season
Yes Latics are in Europe next season but it’s 6 games & unlikely to be many more. I can’t see any of em being particularly well attended at the DW, the TV companies will hardly be falling over themselves to cover Latics games so it will hardly be a showcase for them & the chances are that at least one of em is going to be in some obscure & far flung corner of the continent. Coyle is also likely to rotate his squad so they wouldn’t even have a guarantee of playing in the biggie against the group 1 seed anyway
Then you have the impression that the outside world has of Latics since the club was relegated. The manager (very highly rated in many circles) has gone & been replaced by someone who hardly sets the pulses racing or makes a bold statement of ambition. The chairman has pretty much said that money for new players will come from player sales so some/many of the club’s best players will be shipped out by the time the new ones arrive.
On top of that, not only has the manager gone but the club has lost at least 10 players already from one of the smallest squads in the top flight. That’s likely to have risen to 12-13 come 3rd August. Both the last 2 points give the impression to outsiders of rats deserting a sinking ship & of a club on the slide which in itself is a less attractive proposition than the “monied” clubs on the rise like Leicester, Watford, Forest & I assume QPR who will throw money about to show they don’t intend in hanging round very long.

Coyle has got a rebuilding job on his hands (for example, if I’m right Latics currently only have 2 centre halves on the books, one of who is likely to miss the start of the season after hip surgery & the other won’t have played since January, & are gonna need at least 5 if not 6 next season) so I think whilst promotion has to be the ultimate aim this coming season it is more than likely going to be a season of transition. Hopefully that means a transition where there club can be in play off contention at the very least & not scrapping round at the bottom like Coyle had Bolton doing last season.
Longer term I think for Latics to have any genuine & realistic ambition of getting back into the top flight it will have to be done before the parachute money runs out coz when it does, Latics will no longer have the financial clout to challenge the “bigger” clubs at this level & it’ll take something very special to get us up

Agree with much of what you’vw written, but disagree with the comments regarding Wigan being in Europe.

Overseas players see playing in Europe as putting themselves in a European shop-window, and we’ll be well worth a short term contract.

I think we’ll match the bigger and more illustrious clubs in the Championship for signings until the window closes as we’ve just increased our stepping-stone appeal, but after we’re eliminated from Europe it’ll be back to reality.

            #116669

I stopped reading after “Going off prestige, history & club attendances alone ” as they are the things that suit your argument tylders…

I could easily say going of recent premier league history, current income and european status alone.

Sorry if it went on to be a balanced opinion but I dont have the attention span or inclination for one of your long drawn out disagreemeents today :)

That is your opinion and has no legitimate basis, 90% of your facts are bullshit made up speculation, the other 10% is just crap, most of the players that have left will not be missed in the slightest as they were make up fringe players, most of the “big clubs” you quote are either skint or have some form of retriction hanging over them, the rest are governed by the Football league financial fair play rules, none of them have 20+million in parachute payments for the next 2 seasons.

Despite the players we have lost and the ones we still may lose we still have twice as much quality in the rest than any of the teams you mention.

David Whelan also said that he knows that the squad needs increasing and that any money recieved from transfers will be used on top of the budget he has set up for replacements, not as you say transfers will fund any purchases.

Lastly players dont give a rats ass about history from years ago or how many come through the turnstiles, they look at 3 things, money on offer in wages, will they be surrounded by decent players to win games and make a step up to the next level, and will they win things.

As my new mate Salford says “I cant think of a more attractice prospect than us if you were looking to sign for a Championship this season”
