So what strikers could we realistically get for next season.
14 May 2014 at 1:03 am #131087Forgive me if I’m wrong here , but we had 5 so called forwards on the books this season gone
Waghorn
Powell (played up front)
Fatty at Villa
Maynard
FortuneBut don’t include Holt as he’s gone all together, wouldn’t have scored many if he had stayed..
I disagree, if Holt had played in 49 games as Fortune has I honestly think he would have managed more than 5 goals.
He may not have been the 25 goal a season striker we need, but he is a striker and knows where the net is unlike Fortune etc.
Holt not what we have needed at all.Lazy,no workrate, hardly won a header, unfit(even Lambert has said so at Villa),unlike Fortune(i’ll give you the headers}.Not a Rosler type of player.Nor mine, not that, that means a lot.As for would have scored a lot in 49 games,he scored 2 in 16 while here.
I don’t want a centre forward with a fantastic workrate, I want him in the box knocking the the ball in the net.
BTW, fortune scored his first goal in his 16th match and his last goal 19 matches ago.So I suppose he was quite prolific for the 14 match period in between.
As for Holt, 2 in 16 is a better ratio than 5 in 49 so I was right afterall.
Yes by 1 goal extra if he had kept his ratio up. 2 in 16,4 in 32,6 in 48.That would have made one hell of a difference.
14 May 2014 at 1:17 am #131088They were both shite !!!
Nuff said !! B)
14 May 2014 at 1:42 am #131089So what strikers could we realistically get for next season. That’s Uwe’s job and hopefully he will be able to unearth a couple like Burnley, Leicester and Derby have done.
14 May 2014 at 3:24 am #131092I would make a cheeky bid for that Dicko lad at Wolves. They must have spotted him somewhere. He got under the radar. I reckon they will be looking for around 7 or 8 million now but a cheeky bid of around five mill may get him.He will be scoring freely for Wolves next season. I wonder why!! Maybe a little service and a strike partner.
Obviously wouldn’t work at Latics nor would Jordan Rhodes if they are left flapping around upfront on their own.14 May 2014 at 1:07 pm #131102Birmingham stayed up!! Unless they were involved in some egg chasing end of season knockout bollocks thing were the champions are relegated then play second bottom but lose and go straight to the final against the runners up of the Czech rugby league second division and stay up because they spent double what they are allowed on wages but still don’t lose points because the Greek Rugby League could potentially improve super league Europe by merging the two together hence saving the champions from their relegation fate.
We stayed down because we had no decent strikers Egg Mon. Goals make points just ask the fans at Burnley and Leicester. So they did. That’s what you get for being away on the last day of the season.
I know full well we need a striker as I have commented on another thread but the fact we didn’t play two up front is not why we stayed down. If you play one striker and he scores 30 goals you’ll have a chance. We didn’t score enough goals AS A TEAM.
14 May 2014 at 1:15 pm #131103The reason why we struggle up front IMO is because we buy strikers who are familiar with playing alongside a strike partner & who are not used to playing in that “lone striker” role, or 2 other frontmen with them. Simple solution is to either buy a striker used to that role or go 2 up front.

We also had the worst record in the Championship for throwing away a lead as well according to the commentary on Monday night which would point to our defence being the reason we didn’t go up.

We do create shedloads of chances during games, but struggle to convert those chances.
14 May 2014 at 1:25 pm #131107We do create shedloads of chances during games, but struggle to convert those chances.Indeed. Would playing two upfront fix that? I’m not so sure.
14 May 2014 at 1:43 pm #131108Egg…..to be honest I thought I heard the exact opposite that we’d only lost 6 points all season from winning positions .?.
Anyway, I’m not remotely surprised that he didn’t pick any of the ‘strikers’ because they’ve proven themselves to be broadly inept !
He didn’t. Trust any of em to do the job and as for next season we need to be looking for lower league players who can step up…. They are out there. as others have said , who had heard of Charlie Austin before he topped the scoring charts at Burnley …. They cash him in and find not one but TWO 20 goals plus forwards in the previously anonymous Ings and Vokes.
(I too am fearful that Dicko will come back to haunt us and the rest of the league next season)

Doncaster, Leicester and Yeovil are 6 points straight off the top of my head.
EDIT – Looking at the fixtures we have dropped 8 so probably not the worst.
14 May 2014 at 1:49 pm #131110Well I am somewhat cloth eared to be fair !
Not saying you ain’t correct overall but I didn’t think we lead Doncaster at any point did we (We certainly didn’t over at their place !)

We didn’t. So it was 6.
I’m having a right mare today aren’t I. :woohoo:
14 May 2014 at 8:18 pm #131132When we got promoted to the Prem, we had two up front on most occasions; likewise when we got promoted to the Championship !
