19 June 2015 at 5:06 pm #142863McClean and Fortune are (IMO) both great target men. They’ll run all day and cause defenders problems. They won’t get you 20 goals though and should have been played alongside someone such as Mckay, Waghorn or dare I say Delort.

Apparently we are looking at Billy Sharp again, is he the answer to our scoring woes??

Good record at this level. The problem is that if we play him on his own then our wingers won’t be good enough to get the service he needs and he’ll end up isolated.
I’ve nothing against 1 up top, but it needs the players around it to support and ours haven’t.

20 June 2015 at 2:56 am #142878I wish we could find someone with the skill and natural ability that Simon Howarth had.
I have been watching some old footage of him lately and he was a special talent until his head was turned and he became a lazy waster and went on to do sweet FA after leaving us for ‘bigger and better’ things.
How many times has that happened to players who leave Wigan?
20 June 2015 at 1:25 pm #142879I loved Simon Haworth. His goal at Wembley was fantastic. Yet again, another goal we would still see today if a PL player scores it.
People talk about Roberts and Ellington (rightfully) but what about that front three of Liddell Haworth and Barlow??

Or he would skin the defender and get a shot away (granted he wouldnt score) or cross (winner v brighton) or win a foul (penalty v city). He is never a goal scorer but harsh to say he did nothing else, he just had no support.

It’s all about opinions! To me he was useless, you should have been rhyming off stuff he had done for several lines, the thing is unfortunately you can’t! :(
20 June 2015 at 3:38 pm #142882We’ve certainly had better left wingers. Bryan Griffiths for one.
20 June 2015 at 4:33 pm #142883I liked both MAF and McCLean.
Jimmy Mac always gave his ‘all’ which scores a lot of points with me, just not enough points for WAFC.
MAF was a good strong guy who could get the ball and hold up play.
It’s just a shame these 2 guys were given either the wrong position or, in MAFs case played up front alone. If there’d been 2 up front and these 2 had support we’d have seen Wigan as a goal machine firing in more goals in a season than an AK47 fires in 5 minutes.
Jimmy ran …… a bit like a cheetah …. ‘Give it McCheetah’ I’d hear some clueless supporter shout … but I kinda agreed.

Good interview with James.

I was always a fan of his, but remember him getting some terrible abuse at some games. Wrexham away when we won stands out.
He was always seen as lazy and was our record signing. I think this was held against him.He had a pretty good scoring record at Tranmere after leaving us, but had to retire early due to injury just a couple of years later.
23 June 2015 at 10:25 pm #142908We’ve certainly had better left wingers. Bryan Griffiths for one.He had an end product, either scoring himself or putting the ball onto Phil Daley’s head.
Maybe football was just simpler in those days. -
