8 February 2013 at 10:59 am #102927If my memory serves me well the reason the 85-86 side missed out on promotion was due to us selling Tony Kelly to Stoke. Im pretty sure he went after the then deadline day so could not play in any of Stokes remaing few games against teams that were either involved in promotion or relegation. We however had to play 4 sides out of the bottom six and fluffed it.I dont think many at the time could understand why we sold him so near the seasons end.I honestly believe that had he stayed promotion would have been a shoe-in.
I don’t think he got on with Hamilton. I seem to remember him missing a penalty at Springfield Park, and I don’t think he played much after that. Stories reverberated around town of him throwing his boots at Hamilton. We spoke to him before the Plymouth game, I’m pretty sure he’d been dropped. His transfer to Stoke (who were playing a division higher)wasn’t long after. I have to agree, If we could have kept Tony Kelly, (and don’t forget Newell went to Luton before christmas, Aspinall had signed for Everton and was loaned back for the remainder of the season) we could of achieved promotion quite easily.
8 February 2013 at 11:50 am #102929If only the club at the time could have kept the 85 team together for at least another season,I remember they were a joy to watch and we all looked forward to the weekend games a real buzz about the team in 85,and they were nice lads off the pitch as well always available for a chat with the fans in the old supporters club,HAPPY DAYS

9 February 2013 at 10:36 pm #103058Does anyone on here like me agree that this current side we have in the League of Greed are not a patch on Jewels Division 1 Champions.
I dont think this lot come anywhere near that amazing team despite being two divisions below.Don’t forget A good chunk of that is played in the premier league for us and took us to our best ever points tally.
12 April 2013 at 1:33 am #108906I’d like to think Ellington and Roberts would of made a good impact on the Premier League. It was a shame we never got to see them perform together at the highest level.

12 April 2013 at 1:40 am #108908God knows what finished Ellingtons career, the grief we gave him at west Bromwich, getting married or his Muslim faith , I know he’s still a footballer but he didn’t even get on the field for Crewe at Wembley , shame really .
