How the hell did he get MOTM? He can’t tackle and his sole contribution was to pass the ball back to Bramble and Scharner every chance he got. I thought Bob said he was a creative midfielder. I know it’s early days and we have to give him a chance but he don’t look anything special to me.

One of the best players, on the ball, we have ever seen in a Latics shirt. Never stopped running, never stopped looking for openings, the guy is quality. A very intelligent player.
Have a bit of patience, for f**ks sake!
19 August 2009 at 2:03 pm #5567I’d agree with that, looked great on Saturday. He can’t play a blinder every match can he?
19 August 2009 at 5:06 pm #5623Well according to Fillmoss you have rose tinted glasses on arf :D

Never be happy. Get a class player like that, and criticize them.
Dus’t not remember when our creative hope on the pitch was Neil Morton?

Agree with that, he was all over the park looking for the ball
He’s a class act but I said last night that he would divide opinions between the fans

Perhaps the problem is that some of the fans are still ‘thinking division 3’? Maybe they’d prefer a team of cloggers like John Robertson, than a team of highly skilled European imports?
If you are reading this and thinking ‘John Robertson, Who’s he?’……
….Exactly!
19 August 2009 at 5:28 pm #5638I thought Robbo was great
19 August 2009 at 5:30 pm #5639He was shite
19 August 2009 at 5:33 pm #5640I thought Robbo was greatI thought Bryan Griffifths was great…….
….but he wouldn’t be fit to carry the kit of our players now.
Point is, we’ve moved on as a club, but I think some fans struggle to either accept or adapt to it. Why? I don’t know. Perhaps it will take some people some getting used to, after watching us play direct football for the past few seasons. Jewell went direct when we got Heskey, Hutchings, at first, tried to get us playing a bit. But we were still direct. Bruce basically knew nothing else, other than tight at the back and look for the early ball.
Our style now is totally different, and people have to accept that. I’m bloody glad it’s different, personally.20 August 2009 at 4:40 pm #5817How the hell did he get MOTM? I watched John Robertson and even before that Jeff Wright, Tommy Gore, Peter Houghton etc.
My question was how did Gomez get MOTM? I would have been hard pressed to pick 1 after Tuesday’s nightmare but i don’t think he was the best Wigan player on the pitch. And as I said I will give him time as it is a big step up form the Championship to the Premier League.
But there’s no need as you already have him down as 1 of the most skillful players ever to wear the shirt. After 2 league games and a few pre season friendlies how do you work that out?

Hindley, on the subject of Jeff Wright. Was he crap? I always remember my dad saying he was crap, but I was too young to know any different and was just happy to jump up and down when we scored and look forward to a pie at half time.
Some people on here remember him with fondness. I just remember my dad’s expert analysis of ‘Jeff Wright? Load of crap.’
20 August 2009 at 7:19 pm #5831Jeff Wright was a decent player but he was probably on a different wavelength to others in the team.
I remember him playing some fantastic passes but the “passee” was heading in the opposite direction.
He was the target for a lot of the boo boys because he tried to do things that didn’t come off and he was comfortable on the ball which made the clogger fans think he was lazy. He was a bit like Langley really, probably deserved higher grade football at the time.

I always thought Langley was overrated, personally. Tony Kelly, on the other hand, was class. If only he’d had more discipline OFF the field, with his weight.
