So footballers have the whole world to chose from. Then where are all these Wigan born footballers playing?

More than likely playing Rugby League somewhere in the town.

If you take a good look at the Sporting Curriculum in the schools of Wigan over the last 30 or so years you’ll see exactly why the town of Wigan struggles to produce any talented footballers. It is slowly changing, but it’ll take a while before the bias is rooted out and decent talent is spotted and given a chance or perhaps more importantly, a choice.

      It’s no laughing matter!!

Jesus, you’re as thick as your mate. Did you both not attend the same school?

        Well, come on Einstein.
It was you who said that footballers have the whole world to play in wasn’t it?

Is that the whole world with the exception of Wigan?
If not where are they playing?

Please explain, without resorting to insults, if that’s possible for you.

What on earth are you going on about?

Don’t think Sid James is far off the mark. I went to Deanery and when I was in year 9 we had the 1st football team the school has ever had! Our team won the league AND cup in our first season. Just goes to show that the talent is there but the bias is on Rugby!

I’ve dealt with your retard mate further up the thread and you think I am going to waste my time explaining it once more to another imbecile? That said, here I go…

I didn’t say “… footballers have the whole world to play in” though, did I? I said that football has the whole world to choose its players from. Therefore, the amount of professional footballers from Wigan (or Batley or Dewsbury for that matter) is likely to be a very small percentage of the world’s population of professional footballers.

Conversely, as very few people outside of the M62 and South-east Australasia know/play/have an interest in rugby league, it stands to reason that all its players will come from those few places.

There, and not an insult in sight. Apart from the imbecile and retard ones, but I’m sure even they would stand up in court given the evidence presented in this thread.

Well it’s now 18 pages long the sign thread but they dont care about us do they

Isn’t the real difference is that the folk who decide to start supporting Wigan haven’t ‘jumped ship’ from another rugby club. The same can’t be said about the Latics JCLs. How can you have a serious conversation or discussion with a fan, knowing full well that they were supporting another club just a couple of years earlier?

As opposed to these (in the last month)
Your obsession with Wigan Rugby on here is amazing. I hope you are all saving up for your World Club Challenge tickets (although I realise you will be supporting the Aussie Saints) but thank you in advance for your monetary contributions.

I’m actually a big rugby league fan. I like the game, and I love it when my town’s rugby league team does well.

I also happen to believe that the Warriors have a very simple-minded, balanced fan base. Simple, in so far as the they are seem to be thick as two short planks, and balanced in that they have a chip on both shoulders.

As there are over 35 million football players in the World, there is only a select few that make it to play in the Top Flight teams in the World (I am sorry but you are going to have to get your head around us being a Top Flight Team).

Those 35 million players are trying to earn a professional place of which there less than 300,000 available in the World. It is common sense that an extremely low percentage of players make it and so therefore the chances of playing for your local team are really short odds.

Latics are not the only team in this situation it across the board, how many Manchester born players play for City or United, how many Everton born players play for Everton, hoe many Liverpool born players play for Liverpool, the same can be asked about all Top Flight Football teams.

I am not going to compare it to Rugby League, as there are no comparisons. I am guessing that there are only 300,000 that are even interested in the Sport worldwide never mind play it or want to earn a pro contract at it.

In answer to your question, which is rhetorical as you know the answer, there are no Wigan born players in the current first team, however there are around 50 that play at the academy and hopefully we will see one or two of these prove themselves good enough to play in the Top Flight.

There are local if not from Wigan itself players about, 2nd year pro Jonathan Routledge (has appeared in first team), Joe Holt and first year pro Callum McNanaman (also appeared in first team) have come through the system and looking good to be involved in the future.

Some for the next few years are Thomas Amos, Keenen Gracey, Josh Langley, Jordan Rugg, Jonathan Crane, Jon Breeze, David Mayer, Daniel Lambert, Adam Buxton, Steven Boothman, Callum Williams, Lee Nichols and Sean Myler. Only time will tell if these will make it or not.

As it is, we are playing in a Worldwide sport and we want to pick the best players we can, if the Wigan born players can’t make it to that top 0.01% then we are going to look elsewhere. I can safely presume that all the players in RL come from the towns that play the game right? The difference is quite obvious, with only a few towns to get players from, more local talent will be found.

Do we have to apologise for competing n the most widely played sport in the world? Or should we play just the Wigan or local lads and end up where some of the Warriors supporters feel we belong – life was much easier for them when all the limelight was on the Rugby team wasn’t it! (Statement not question)

FA Cup Winners 2013, sounds good that

I did a teaching practice at Rose Bridge in 1974, they had a cabinet full of rugby league trophies but a new PE teacher who was into soccer.

Soccer is what they played and RL was abandoned.

Suited me at the time as my college wouldn’t go near league so I would have been lost.

It’s down to the teaching staff (or was, don’t know if it’s the same now).

no , what has been explained is that footy is a global game etc etc blah blah blah

what has not been explained is the complete lack of home grown talent or the reasons for it :?

                      lets swap this around ……

if you are running a business , would you want one of your apprentices to maybe make the grade ??

c’mon lets have some honesty on here , are none of the latics fans even the slightest bit bothered by this ?

I would like to see homegrown talent come through into our first team but to be fair, I don’t care really.

There are not many people that care about rugby etc and not many people that want it as a career. The chances of a Wigan rugby player playing for Warriors is much higher than a Wigan footbaler getting a contract at latics.

Your lot don’t need to do much to get contracts there, I play poker with a few of the lads that play for Warriors and speak to them and it is hardly like they are training every day to be fit etc.
