“A man who applied for the vacant Latics managerial post in November 2014, only to lose out to a certain M. Mackay.”

Well if that bit is true then the club is a fucking joke!

        Sums us up that. Cheap

For once, you & I agree.

What has become of the keeper signed from Torquay almost 18 months ago? Is he the new Lee Nicholls, destined to spend his entire contract playing for any club other than Wigan Athletic?

Same as Flores, Chow Cosgrove etc I imagine not kicked on. Good policy ain’t it mutt? Farm out your young talent and bring in loan players whose club then holds a gun at your head. Beltin.

Not to mention many other players purchased and then loaned out, which isn’t a just a recent thing but this season add to your list Morsy, Colclough, Woolery and others. Granted some needed game time but the wholesale loaning out and then wholesale loaning in just seems crazy especially with the added on clauses.
Think it is time to bring back a true reserve league and reserve teams made up of squad players not getting regular football but keep the development squad and just re-name them a and b sides and also limit loan players to two or three in or out per club.

We had Jussi the lad from Torquay and didn’t we also sign the Walsall keeper. They must have been deemed good enough for us to sign them so how have we got into this situation.

Its ridiculous. I read that Latics were one keeper injury away from having to play an outfield player in goal against Forest in the cup. That’s crap. Dan Lavercombe was warming the bench or the stands until 13 Jan, when he went on loan to Rhyl.

The fact is, someone at the club made a really bad call to sign the Stoke keeper on whatever terms they stated, then signed another keeper at the end of January. If the terms of the loan was that he was to play, why on earth sign Gilks, knowing that he would only get game time in the event of injury?

Whats happened to Jussi? He still features on the squad list – so was he unavailable for those fixtures? Surely a combination of Jussi/Lavercombe as backup to Hauggard would have sufficed, or sign Gilks as No1 and have them as back-ups.

The whole scenario stinks of absolute amateurish dealing and no forward planning – and potentially it could now cost you your place in the division.

Apparently Mackay was recommended to Whelan by members of the backroom and playing staff who’d played with him or been managed by him in the past.

It wasn’t a matter of going for the cheap option because both he and Hughton were out of work at the time.

          Yes, we did. Richard O’Donnell.

He’s now second choice at Rotherham!

Gilks was signed on a free – but only to cover while Haugaard was injured.

I’m presuming Jussi isn’t interested in playing regularly these days, and it appears the coaching staff under Joyce didn’t think Dan Lavercombe was ready for league football yet.

I imagine one wanted higher wages than the other.

Hughton had been unfairly sacked by Newcastle despite gaining them promotion from The Championship and seemingly doing well in the Prem. Had then done relatively well at Birmingham, almost guiding them out of The Championship. Had decided to take the Norwich job for Prem football but for some reason that just didn’t work. He was also offered assistant manager jobs at various Prem clubs but declined.
Mackay whilst doing well at Cardiff had an FA investigation for being racist, sexist and homophobic hanging over his head and was also being questioned about his financial activities with Iain Moody over agent fees and signings whilst at Cardiff. The Wigan fans deeply opposed the signing of Mackay but it went ahead anyway! I can’t help thinking that Hughton wanted a bigger wage than Mackay and rightfully so. This was probably the point where the club started to go tits up! My Gran used to say “If you buy cheap, you buy twice” She was right!

I know all that, but what I’m saying is there were individuals within the club who had played with or been managed by Mackay at other clubs who testified for Mackay being a good choice of manager.

So, I very much doubt it was a case of Hughton pricing himself out, and more a case of teammates of Mackay putting in a good word for him.

Probably so, but at the time I very much Hughton would have turned down the job based on what money was being offered.
