LMB has been informed by one of his contacts that the clause is 6.5M Euros, which equates to approx £5.5M. The dropped £0.5M is probably just lazy journalism as I very much doubt Newcastle bidding under that and having it accepted.
In fact, who’s to say Newcastle have bid at all and it isn’t just a story leaked for the purpose of trying to get Everton to hurry things along and pay the money up front.
Let me just clear this up,
Kone did an interview just after we were relegated saying he did not know where he would be playing next season although he was quite happy at WAFC, which I read online, in that article there was a quote from his agent about a €6.5 mill buy out clause that he had revealed to a Spanish newspaper. Despite trying I cannot find that original link.
A thread was started about why some sources were quoting his release fee at £6.5 while other sources said £5 million, It was MY ASSUMPTION that this was a possible reason. A chat with a local journalist seemed to legitimise my theory, as he had read the same article and come to the same conclusion as myself over the discrepancy in quoted fees.
I do have a contact at the Everton end, the same person who told me that Martinez’s appointment at Everton was agreed weeks before it happened despite what Whelan and Kenwright were saying publicly, that same person is the one who told me about Whelan demanding full payment up front for Kone with Everton only wanting a structured payment deal, he had no idea about figures involved.
The last part of that post I made regarding the link with Holt and Norwich came from a friend who is Norwich fan and season ticket holder, he rang me to ask about Kone and told me they had offered Holt and cash to meet our valuation, again I assumed that is where and why linking WAFC with Holt came from.
