      Saturday 4th January 1986 : F.A. Cup Third Round : Latics 3 AFC Bournemouth 0
Strangely , almost to the day , Latics ( then in Division Three ) played Bournemouth at home in almost blizzard conditions , at a completely snowbound Springfield Park on a frozen pitch ! Many thought that the game would not even start , let alone finish , but goals by Colin Methven (48min) , Tony Kelly (78min) and Warren Aspinall (88min) ensured safe passage through to the Fourth Round , where Southampton would await at the Dell . Despite the freezing conditions 4,185 turned out to see Latics continue their 24 match unbeaten home record , in all competitions . I hadn’t seen Latics play in conditions like these , since the Halifax Town F.A. Cup First Round victory in November 1971, while still a Non League club ! Great F.A. Cup memories ! :cheer:

Remember the game well, was willing the ref to continue till the time elapsed whereby the score would stand.
George may be able to tell us what that time was, 75 mins? or have I dreamt it?.

I think we also played with orange ball which was fairly rare in those times. Fekin cold that day, toes and fingers well and truly shot at, but not has bad as the Halifax game you mentioned.

Watched it from the the shed stand behind the goals which eventually became the away end. Remember crying with pain and it got worse when I got home and hit the warmth of the fire. Unbelievable thawing out pain. :woohoo:

Did we not play these men in another orange ball game and it get called off after about half hour? There was about 20 of em in the shevvy shed.

Tomorrow it will be 12 degrees, it now floods instead instead of snows, we’ll be seen as a potential scalp so they’ll bring 2000 and 7000 att will be seen as a shocking crowd.

It’s a myth, I’m afraid John, that there is such a time when the “score stands”.

Law 7 states that a game lasts two halves of 45 minutes, and it states “an abandoned match shall be replayed unless the rules of the competition state otherwise”. The FA Cup and Premier League have no such clauses, so any abandonment should be replayed in full. There was the famous 1961 case of Denis Law scoring 6 for City in a game that was abandoned, and had to be replayed. His goals were all erased from the records, and City lost the rearranged match.

In practice the organising committee can look at whether a game abandoned near the end has to be replayed, but it would have to be very near the end.

I was actually at the famous “Denis Law backheel” match that sent United into the (old) second division and that was abandoned after about 88 minutes because of “crowd invasions” (it was actually non-threatening – just kids running all over the pitch) and that wasn’t replayed.

But in answer to your question – there isn’t such a time.

Hello Tez H , you are quite correct , we played them at home on March 7th 1987 in a Division Three fixture . It was abandoned on 61 minutes at 1-1 . When it was replayed in April , we lost 0 – 2 :(

Filmoss from what i read you won’t be there or will leave around half time ;)

They’ve sold about 1700 with pay on the day surely we’ll have at least 5000 bothering to turn up to watch the new lads for a tenner?

Thought as much about the abandoned game. Cheers.

You are right, I wont be bothering ! I have a season ticket and feel I can go and leave when I please ! It’s all about prerogatives you see ! I shall be back on here tomorrow, either to hold my hand up or say ” Told ya ” Our cup record under Bob is nothing short of atrocious and so I made the decision to stay well away ! ;)

I always find the ‘ I won’t be bothering’ comments amazing. It’s supposed to be your team. What else will you be doing ffs!

You bother every other week and tomorrow it’s only a ten spot to get in and see the new lads.

Me and little un (2 & 1/2) for his 2nd ever game tomorrow.

Win or lose it’s the FA Cup 3rd round.

Thanks for clearing that one up George. I’m sure at the time we thought there was a cut off point for the game to stand.

I was at The Dell when United played Southampton in a cup match back in the 70’s. The game was all square with about 2-3 mins to go when a shed full of united fans went out of the away end and came marauding into the home end. Everyone spilled onto the pitch and the ref blew up for full time and quickly ran off with the players. I might have said this afore but what happened next was the biggest battle I have ever been in or seen in my time watching football. Hit or be hit was the name of the game which made it quite difficult with both sets of fans wearing the same colours.
It lasted for at least 30 mins before the cops on horses came onto the pitch to try and clear things up a bit. :woohoo:

Indeed a season ticket works out at £13 odd a game yet this game is for £10 admittedly it is Bournemouth but you just have to look what lower league ticket prices are ,they are dearer than us

It’s quite bizarre how you remember some games and others not at all. This Bournemouth game falls into the not at all category even though I must have been there. You would think the threat that the game might not finish because of snow would etch it into the memory for ever. Now the trip to Southampton I do remember with some degree of clarity.

                            It is true.

I know for example for certain that I have seen both Exeter and Lincoln a number of times. But do you know that for the life of me I cannot remember one minute of any game.

I don’t remember much of any games with Bournemouth either, except one excruciatingly boring 0-0 at Springfield the season we were relegated, I think, but I do remember seeing Ted McDougall playing for them v Tranmere back in about 1971/1972.
