I have just witnessed possibly the most inept first day performance from a Wigan team that I can remember. We have a defence that can’t defend a midfield that doesn’t know wether it’s coming or going and 1 poor bugger up front who got no service whatsoever. The only positive is that it wasn’t more as it could and should have been at least 7.
I blame the shambles on our manager as he has learned nothing from last season as his style of play and tactics simply do not work. Why can he not see what is obvious to everyone who went today??????

Note to self – consider whether to buy season ticket again.
(You KNOW I will – this was just for comedic effect)

If I had let one of my managers start with a clean slate after some horrendous mistakes the previous year, and then watch them make the biggest mistake again on their first day back they’d be out the door no questions asked.
12 goals conceded and none scored in our last two Premiership games, against both the best and supposedly worst team in the division…

Are ‘your managers’ Sales Managers? If so, you’d have set them targets (for instance, to stay in the Premier League). Yes, there were very poor results, but also some remarkable results, and in the end, everything evened itself up, and your manager reached his target.
So a new trading year/football season starts and your manager performs poorly in the first week when he should have down much better. Would you sack him now, or think ‘Let’s see how he does in the next few weeks against some bigger challenges. He managed it last year’?
15 August 2010 at 3:58 am #42625The end doesn’t justify the means Standish.
Would a trader that repeatedly loses millions for his company, but then pulls it all back with one lucky gamble, stand the test of time if he reverted back to type straight after? Nope.
I give all of my bods a fair crack at the whip, but if they fail to develop / respond to feedback then they go.
15 August 2010 at 3:59 am #42626for the sake of wigan athletic he should go,come on four nil blackpool its a disgrace
but are you happy with it,will spurs chelsea be any differant ?

If it’s in terms of sales and profit, then yes the end does justify the means.
You want to make money, so you set them a target of what money to make, and they make it. Who cares how they did it, as long as they did it and there’s a chance they can do it again? For the following year you give them a chance, knowing that there’s the ability present to full off some fantastic results to counteract the poor ones.
Likewise if a football manager is set a target of staying up/top four finish/winning the league and they do it, who cares how they did it?
Martinez will probably have the same target again this year. Whlean will keep the team in business and Martinez will keep it in the league. Lose 8–0, then win eight games 1-0, as long as the goal is met, it doesn’t matter. We’ll never be a big team.

Okay, Whelan stays, Martinez stays and does poorly, and we get relegated.
Or
Whelan leaves, Martinez leaves, we have no money and cannot attract players, and we get relegated.
Notice the end result.
We don’t love Whelan, but we need him.
