I guess that some of us could see how things were unfurling before our very eyes whilst others refused to accept it ! It was mid January when I realised that we would more than likely go down and despite a very brief period of hope ( 1 week ) my fears were eventually confirmed ! Darkside ? No. realist ? Yes ! ;)

18 June 2013 at 3:00 pm #116481Looking back is a funny old game.
When did you realise that Wigan were going quite well in the Cup?
When did you realise that Wigan were going to win the Cup?
When did you realise that the deciding game of the season would be at Arsenal three days after the Cup Final?
Now, what about an insight into our fortunes next season!

I realised we were going to win the FA Cup when I backed them at 50-1 ! Kerching !!
As for the deciding game ? The only reason we still had a slight chance of survival come the Arsenal game was because others hadn’t pulled away. Our league form was that of a relegation side and I could see that, it’s a pity that you couldn’t but blind faith sometimes blurs ones vision !
Next season ? I see transition ahead and a mid table finish would be satisfactory ! ;)
18 June 2013 at 4:07 pm #116487Well done, Phil! So the next round is on you.
Personally I always said that Wigan didn’t have the resources to succeed in two competitions. And Wigan not only had a small squad, they also had a lot of injuries last season.
If Premier League survival was the top priority, then Roberto was right to field weakened teams in the cup competitions. Bournemouth, Macclesfield, Huddersfield and Everton all let him down. He played to win the two games at Wembley. The semi-final was straightforward, the final was fantastic.
As was always likely, squeezing in midweek games before and just after the Cup Final proved beyond their resources. But Wigan remained in the hunt for so long because they were little different in standard from the other struggling teams. Unfortunately, they had more on their plate and fewer players available.
Would I accept relegation as the price of a Cup win? I think I would!
This season, it’s a little worrying that Wigan have got the complication of the Community Shield plus three home and three away games in the Europa League. Perhaps all the local Lancashire and Yorkshire games will be some compensation.
I trust that the excitement this season will come towards the top of the table, and that Wigan will be more like Bolton than Wolves! I certainly think that they will be a top half team, and with a little luck they could finish in the top six.

Bravo Mystic Meg, there is a difference to believing we will go down and wanting to believe we will stay up. personally I have loved the bumpy ride that was Martinez reign, and accepted the relegation when it came.
The thing the darkside will never understand is supporting your team and enjoying it while it lasts. being a defeatest and accepting fates before they have come to pass. Must have been a sad old time for you.
Shoudl have had your money on us for the cup at the start of the season 500-1 lol

If the truth be known, the FA Cup win papered over the cracks of a pretty disappointing final Premiership campaign that ultimately ended with us bailing out ! I wanted us to survive but saw hardly anything to give me hope and that is what I wrote, say what you see ! Bar the FA Cup there was not too much to enjoy about last season especially the the home form which was dire to say the least ! If you chose to suppress the very fact that we played like a relegation destined side then fair enough but deep down I knew that our 8 year stint was coming to an end but it was far far from a sad old time for me because I had more or less accepted the fact and was prepared !

So you didnt walk away from the DW on numerous occasions last season thinking ” Well that was shit ” did you not ? I did but it didn’t mean that I had not just got behind my team for 90mins and tried to gee them on ! Oh I did my bit, alas the team didn’t do theirs and down they went ! So I did back them through thick and thin, the difference being that I am not a one dimensional person and I have opinions that were deemed to be negative yet with hindsight realistic which is the whole point of my thread ! You keep smiling and nodding and I will form opinions !

I think if you ask the lads I go to games with, they will tell you that I am usually the one who walks off the DW giving credit to the side that’s took 3 points of us and pointing out were I think we’ve gone wrong. Within a couple of hours after the game I’ve kicked the cat, bit the wife’s head off, clod half mi tea in the bin and on my 4th pint, I start looking forward to the next game and the positive vibes come back.
Do I feel the need to come on here slagging the manager, chairman, players off….err no.
Do I bite when the D/S come on winging like fek…….unfortunately yes.
You see I’ve been used to defending my club over the years from cheap jibes from chubster fans and the big club followers.
It just pishes me orf when our own fans do it to a degree teetering on hatred, not that you are in that catagory. You seem to be a poster who changes your views depending on the outcome of each game almost.
I remember Griff saying a while back that if we go down, you just know that the D/S’s will be in their element bleating on about “I told you so”
So well done, you told me so and well done for having a realistic opinion, great stuff pal. From Matlock to ManU
